To record your iPhone screen while narrating, open Control Center, touch and hold Screen Recording, turn on Microphone, then tap Start Recording. After the three-second countdown, dismiss Control Center and begin. Your recording saves automatically in Photos.
Turn on the microphone and start recording
- Open Control Center. On an iPhone with Face ID, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.
- Find Screen Recording. If the control is not there, add Screen Recording to Control Center in your iPhone’s settings.
- Open its options. Touch and hold the Screen Recording control; a regular tap starts recording without taking you through the microphone options.
- Enable narration. Tap Microphone so it is on, then tap Start Recording.
- Begin the screen activity. Wait for the three-second countdown, dismiss Control Center, and speak while you perform the task you want to capture.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide documents enabling the microphone from the Screen Recording options. Microphone audio adds your narration; do not assume every app’s audio or protected content will be recorded.
Stop the recording and find the video
You can stop from the recording indicator or from Control Center. On iPhone models with Dynamic Island, tap the red recording indicator, then tap Stop Screen Recording. On other models, tap the red timer at the top left and choose Stop. You can also open Control Center and tap its red Screen Recording control.
The clip saves automatically to your photo library. To locate it in Photos, open Collections > Media Types > Screen Recordings.

What to check if the result is unexpected
- Your voice is missing: Before starting, touch and hold Screen Recording in Control Center and confirm that Microphone is on. The microphone option is part of the long-press options.
- An app’s picture or sound is missing: Some apps may block recording their content. Apple does not identify which apps in its guide, so a missing app capture does not necessarily mean the iPhone recording control failed.
- You are trying to record while mirroring: iPhone cannot screen-record and screen-mirror at the same time.
- You want to use AirPods or an external microphone: Apple’s screen-recording guide explains the built-in microphone toggle but does not establish whether AirPods, adapters, or external microphones work as screen-recording inputs. Do not rely on them without checking your specific setup.
