Test a web UI against the browsers and devices your product promises to support, then add focused checks for high-risk user journeys and platform-specific behavior. Playwright projects make it practical to run repeatable Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, and selected emulated-device configurations; emulation is useful but is not proof that every physical phone or branded browser behaves the same.

Build a test matrix around users and risk

There is no universal browser-and-device matrix that fits every site. Start with the support policy you publish, then prioritize combinations based on who uses the product, what can break, and the cost of a failure.

  1. List supported environments. Record the browsers, operating systems, and device classes your product promises to support. Include any contractual or enterprise requirements.
  2. Map critical journeys. Identify paths where a UI defect would block or materially harm users: sign-in, checkout, navigation, forms, and media are common examples.
  3. Use audience and incident evidence. If available, review analytics and prior compatibility incidents to identify the environments that matter most to your users.
  4. Mark platform-specific risks. Flag touch interactions, viewport changes, media playback, permissions, and browser/OS integrations that may behave differently across environments.
  5. Choose a manageable set. Cover supported browser engines and important branded browsers, use emulation for inexpensive responsive checks, and reserve physical-device runs for risks that emulation cannot establish.

Keep the matrix deliberate rather than running every possible browser, OS, device, and orientation combination. Revisit it when your support policy, audience, or incident patterns change.

Use Playwright projects for repeatable browser coverage

A Playwright project groups tests under a configuration, which can represent a browser, device, environment, timeout, or retry policy. The official Playwright projects guide shows configurations for Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, emulated mobile profiles, and branded Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

In a Playwright Test setup, configure only the projects that match your matrix. For example, a compact desktop baseline could look like this:

import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  projects: [
    { name: 'chromium', use: { ...devices['Desktop Chrome'] } },
    { name: 'firefox', use: { ...devices['Desktop Firefox'] } },
    { name: 'webkit', use: { ...devices['Desktop Safari'] } },
  ],
});

Run all configured projects with npx playwright test, or select one project with npx playwright test --project=webkit. Project names are the names you assign in the configuration. Install the browser builds corresponding to your Playwright version with npx playwright install; the browser guide recommends keeping Playwright and its matching browser binaries updated.

Distinguish engine coverage from branded browser coverage

Playwright’s defaults are Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Chromium is not necessarily the same build as the stable Chrome or Edge release a user runs: Playwright notes that its Chromium project can be ahead of branded stable browsers. If regressions against public Chrome or Edge releases, enterprise policies, or other release-specific behavior matter, add the branded stable channel projects shown in the official browser documentation.

Playwright’s WebKit build is not branded Safari. It is built from upstream WebKit, and host operating system differences can matter; Playwright specifically calls out media codec variation across Linux, macOS, and Windows. For cases such as video playback where closer Safari behavior matters, its documentation recommends WebKit on macOS in examples. Treat that as a more targeted check, not a claim that it validates every Safari release or iPhone.

Use emulation for fast responsive and interaction checks

Playwright device presets simulate parameters including user agent, screen size, viewport, and touch. These settings are useful for checking responsive layouts and touch-oriented interactions in local development and CI without needing a physical device for every run. The emulation guide documents the available settings and presets.

Emulation does not reproduce every physical device condition. A preset models selected browser and device parameters; it does not establish the behavior of a particular phone’s hardware, mobile OS integration, or all browser versions. Presets also assume a platform: Playwright notes that a preset such as Desktop Chrome carries a Windows-specific user-agent string unless changed. Make the assumed platform explicit when configuring or interpreting a test.

Add real-device checks where hardware or mobile OS behavior matters

Prioritize physical Android or iOS device checks when a failure could depend on touch, browser/OS integration, viewport behavior, media, permissions, or another hardware-sensitive detail. A real-device run complements projects and emulation; it does not make the rest of the matrix unnecessary.

Cloud device services can extend access beyond devices a team owns, but supported Playwright versions, browsers, operating systems, and devices are provider-specific and change. BrowserStack documents its supported combinations in its Playwright browser and OS compatibility page and describes device testing in its mobile-device guide. Verify the live compatibility information and exact automation support before making a provider part of CI.

Keep the matrix diagnosable and affordable

  • Record versions and configuration. Keep the Playwright version, browser version, host OS, device preset or model, viewport, and project name visible with test results. This makes environment-specific failures easier to reproduce.
  • Match capacity to risk. Run the broader browser suite at a cadence your CI can sustain, and use narrower project selection for fast feedback during development. Add parallel capacity only when the extra coverage and feedback speed justify its cost.
  • Preserve useful failure evidence. Retain the artifacts your chosen setup actually supports and your team needs to debug failures; confirm provider and plan capabilities instead of assuming all services expose the same traces, screenshots, video, or logs.
  • Review drift. Update Playwright and install its corresponding browsers as part of a deliberate maintenance process. For cloud devices, check current compatibility periodically because supported versions and device choices can change.
  • Check privacy and cost before outsourcing runs. Confirm your organization’s data constraints and the provider’s current terms and pricing. The documented capabilities cited here do not establish a neutral price comparison or comparative performance benchmark.

Troubleshoot cross-platform failures

A test fails only in one Playwright project

First identify what differs in that project: browser engine, channel, OS, device preset, viewport, or touch configuration. Re-run only the failing project with npx playwright test --project=PROJECT_NAME, then compare the recorded environment and failure artifacts against a passing project. Avoid changing application code until the difference is understood.

A WebKit pass is being treated as proof of Safari support

WebKit is not branded Safari. If the behavior depends on Safari’s public release or a macOS-specific case such as video playback, use the relevant macOS and real-device coverage available to your team rather than inferring it from a generic WebKit run.

A mobile preset passes but a phone still fails

That is a signal to test the affected flow on the relevant physical device or a documented cloud device configuration. Emulation checks selected browser parameters, not every hardware or OS integration.

Results change after a browser update

Record the Playwright and browser versions, then verify that the installed browser binaries correspond to the framework version in use. Review whether the change is expected in the engine or branded channel, and keep the failing project configuration attached to the issue.

A cloud device run cannot start on the chosen combination

Check the provider’s current browser, OS, device, and Playwright compatibility documentation. Supported combinations are provider- and version-specific; select a documented configuration or adjust the matrix rather than assuming a device listed for one automation mode supports another.

Or skip the browser setup

For screenshot capture rather than interactive cross-browser test execution, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-call API can capture a page as an image or PDF, but a screenshot is not a substitute for running UI tests across browsers or validating interactions on real devices. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently asked questions

Should every pull request run the entire browser matrix?

Not necessarily. Select a smaller set for quick feedback when appropriate, while ensuring the broader supported matrix runs at a cadence that can catch compatibility regressions before release.

Does the WebDriver standard determine which browsers Playwright supports?

Playwright’s browser projects and cloud-provider compatibility are documented separately from the W3C WebDriver specification. The W3C page identifies its 2026-07-02 document as a Working Draft and links to the latest published version; that status should not be confused with a statement about Playwright’s own support. See W3C WebDriver.
