To test print CSS without printing, switch the page to print media in Chrome DevTools, then inspect or capture the result. For repeatable regression checks, use Playwright to emulate print media and compare a screenshot against a saved baseline. Use a PDF as a separate check when you need to verify page breaks and pagination.
What print-media screenshot testing checks
A print-media screenshot shows how a page looks when the browser applies its @media print rules. It helps catch visual issues such as navigation that remains visible, content hidden unexpectedly, or print-specific styling that does not take effect.
It is a visual check, not a complete test of a printed document. A screenshot does not verify physical printer output, and an image comparison cannot determine whether the page’s content is semantically correct. For pagination and page breaks, also inspect a PDF.
Inspect print CSS manually in Chrome DevTools
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open the Rendering panel. If it is not visible, use the DevTools command menu or panel options to find it.
- In Emulate CSS media type, select print.
- Inspect the page and check whether print-specific styles take effect and screen-only presentation is removed. Edit CSS in DevTools to diagnose issues, then make lasting changes in your project stylesheet.
- Capture a screenshot if you need a visual record of the result.
Chrome documents this control as a way to force the page into print preview mode. This is a manual inspection workflow; the DevTools instructions do not describe a built-in screenshot-baseline assertion system. Chrome’s print-media emulation instructions

Automate print screenshots with Playwright
Playwright can emulate print media and capture a screenshot. The following Node.js example assumes you have installed Playwright and have a browser available through your project’s Playwright setup. Replace the example URL with your page.

Compare screenshots with Playwright Test
For visual regression testing, add an assertion to a Playwright Test test after navigating and emulating print media:

The assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots are identical before making the comparison. This assertion is for the Playwright Test runner. Keep visual regression checks stable
- Fix the rendering environment. Use the same browser, operating system, settings, hardware, and headless mode when creating and checking baselines. Playwright documents these as sources of screenshot variation.
- Control dynamic content. Use a screenshot-only stylesheet with
stylePathto filter volatile elements, or mask selected elements with the screenshot assertion’s masking options. - Choose a deliberate tolerance. Playwright supports pixel- and ratio-based thresholds. Set a threshold that suits your project; there is no universal threshold that defines visual correctness.
- Review baseline updates. Version-control reference images and inspect changes before accepting an updated baseline.
- Test visibility rules explicitly. Check that print-only content appears and screen-only content disappears, and consider checking the reverse screen-media behavior too. The expected assertions depend on your site’s requirements.
A baseline is evidence of how the page rendered in a controlled environment, not a guarantee that every browser or physical printer will produce identical output.
Use a PDF to check pagination
Playwright’s page.pdf() generates a PDF using print CSS. Use it when the question is whether page breaks, paper size, margins, or paginated output are correct. A PDF is a different artifact from a screenshot, so it complements rather than replaces image inspection.

Playwright documents that PDF generation modifies colors by default for printing. If the PDF needs to preserve exact colors, the API points to -webkit-print-color-adjust. See the Playwright Page API.

Troubleshoot common problems
The page still looks like its screen layout
Confirm that Emulate CSS media type is set to print in DevTools, or that your Playwright code calls page.emulateMedia({ media: 'print' }) before taking the screenshot. Also check that the relevant rules are actually inside the intended @media print block.

The screenshot changes between runs
Keep the browser and execution environment consistent, and investigate dynamic page content such as changing timestamps or rotating banners. Use a screenshot-only stylesheet or masks for volatile regions, then review any threshold and baseline changes rather than accepting differences automatically.
The screenshot looks right but the PDF does not
Screenshot and PDF output answer different questions. Generate a PDF with page.pdf() to inspect pagination and print-specific color handling; do not assume that a screenshot verifies page breaks or PDF colors.
