Use Playwright Test to open a modal through its normal trigger, verify that it is visible and behaves correctly, then compare a screenshot of the dialog or the full viewport with a reviewed baseline. Pair the image check with focused accessibility and keyboard assertions: a screenshot can catch appearance changes, but cannot prove that focus stays inside the modal or returns appropriately when it closes.
Choose the modal states your test must protect
Start by deciding which states matter to users and to the design contract. A useful test suite might cover the ordinary open state, a validation error, a confirmation state, or a narrow viewport. Choose representative states rather than taking many near-identical screenshots.
Open each dialog through its user-facing control. This exercises the same route a user takes and avoids coupling the test to implementation details. Then assert that the dialog is visible and, where appropriate, exposed with an accessible dialog role and name.
Write a Playwright screenshot comparison
Install and configure Playwright Test for your application, then add a test such as this. Replace the route, trigger name, dialog name, and expected focus target to match your app.

Capture the right boundary
Capture only the dialog panel
Use await expect(dialog).toHaveScreenshot('settings-dialog.png') when the contract is the panel’s layout, typography, controls, and contents. A locator image keeps unrelated page changes out of this comparison.

Capture the viewport or page
Use await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('settings-page.png') when the important behavior is the relationship between the dialog and the rest of the page: backdrop dimming, centering, overlay coverage, clipping, or alignment against underlying content. A full-page capture can include content outside the viewport; choose the page or viewport boundary to match the defect you want the test to catch.
Test modal behavior as well as appearance
A passing image comparison does not establish that the dialog works as a modal. Add targeted checks for its accessible name, important text, buttons, and errors, as well as keyboard and focus behavior. The WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide says focus moves inside when a dialog opens, remains within it during tab navigation, and ordinarily returns to the invoking element when it closes. Escape should close the dialog when that is the documented behavior. A visible close button should also be available in line with the pattern. See the WAI-ARIA APG modal dialog pattern.

For a native HTML <dialog>, W3C’s H102 technique gives test steps for keyboard activation, focus entry, focus containment, and focus return: H102: Using the dialog element. Adapt checks to the behavior your application promises; do not assume every dialog has identical close rules or focus-return exceptions.
Playwright accessibility snapshots can compare the accessibility tree and complement visual assertions when you need to check structure. Prefer focused assertions for the semantics that matter rather than making an entire tree snapshot brittle. See Playwright accessibility snapshots.

Keep screenshot baselines stable
Visual comparisons can be affected by operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other environment differences. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible. Keep the browser and host setup, viewport, device scale, fonts, and test configuration consistent; Playwright recommends using the same environment for baseline and comparison runs.
Playwright’s screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the final capture with the expectation. That helps avoid capturing during a transient render, but it does not make genuinely changing content deterministic. Control animation, time-based values, randomized content, remote data, and user-specific content in your test setup.

If a region varies but is irrelevant to the requirement, mask it or apply a narrowly scoped style. Explain why the region is excluded, and do not mask the modal or meaningful content. Use a diff tolerance only when unavoidable rendering noise justifies it; a broad tolerance can hide real regressions. Troubleshoot common failures
- The first run reports a missing baseline: this is expected when the screenshot assertion has no stored reference yet. Review the generated image, then commit it as the expected baseline.
- The image differs across machines: align the operating system, browser version, viewport, device scale, fonts, and test mode with the environment that produced the baseline.
- The screenshot is captured during a transition or changing content: wait for the intended state, control animations or data variation, and use Playwright’s screenshot assertion rather than capturing at an arbitrary instant.
- A full-page comparison fails after an unrelated page change: capture the dialog locator if the requirement concerns only the panel. Keep viewport capture for defects involving the backdrop or page relationship.
- The visual test passes but keyboard use fails: add explicit focus, Tab and Shift+Tab containment, Escape where supported, and focus-return assertions. Pixel comparison does not test those interactions.
- A baseline update would accept an unexpected regression: inspect the actual and diff images and check the intended change before updating the reference. Do not treat a baseline refresh as a substitute for review.
