Use a flat JSON object for JSON requests, or repeat the headers form field once per header. These headers are for URL screenshots—not HTML/CSS or template renders—and they do not automate an interactive sign-in flow.
Set headers in a JSON request
Send a POST request to https://hcti.io/v1/image, authenticate with HTTP Basic authentication (API ID as username and API key as password), and put each header name and string value in a flat headers object:

}The object must be flat: nested objects and arrays are unsupported. Include either url or html when creating an image, not both. Custom request headers apply to URL screenshots.
Set headers in a form request
For a form submission, use the same headers parameter, but repeat it for each header as name:value. The API splits each entry at its first colon, so colons later in a value are retained.

Control which origins receive headers
By default, custom headers accompany the top-level navigation to the requested URL’s origin. To send them to another authorized origin, list that exact origin in additional_header_origins. An origin includes its scheme, host, and optional port; changing the scheme or port creates a different origin.

Headers are not automatically sent to page subrequests such as CSS, images, or JavaScript. Set include_headers_on_subrequests to true only if those requests need the headers. They will then be sent only to the requested origin and origins listed in additional_header_origins. Leave this setting off when only the top-level page needs credentials, which helps avoid sending them to unrelated resources or cross-origin redirects.

- Header names must be case-insensitively unique and no longer than 512 ASCII characters.
- Header values may be up to 8,192 UTF-8 bytes.
- Control characters are disallowed except horizontal tab.
- Hop-by-hop, proxy, forwarding, connection, host, infrastructure-controlled, and certain prefixed headers are restricted.
Invalid, duplicate, restricted, or oversized headers result in a request error. Check the exact spelling, uniqueness, length, and allowed use of every header if the API rejects a request.
Cookies, sign-in, and protecting credentials
The API does not automate an interactive login flow. For a page you are authorized to access, send an appropriate short-lived session cookie or authorization token through headers. If the site offers an embeddable view that meets your needs, using it may avoid rendering a signed-in page.

Treat your API key like a password, and scope it to the operations your application needs. The header guide recommends short-lived, narrowly scoped page credentials. Avoid placing secrets in create-and-render URLs: URLs can appear in browser history, access logs, analytics, and referrer data.
Signed create-and-render URLs
If you use a signed create-and-render URL, represent each header as a repeated headers query parameter in name:value form. Include every repeated parameter in its exact order and encoding when generating the HMAC token. Keep signing on your server; do not expose the API key in client-side code.

Troubleshoot common request problems
- The page is not receiving a header: Confirm this is a URL screenshot request and that the header is in the JSON object or repeated form field as appropriate. For a different authorized origin, add the exact scheme, host, and port to
additional_header_origins. - The main page works but an image or script does not: If that subrequest needs the header, enable
include_headers_on_subrequests. Verify its origin is the requested origin or is listed inadditional_header_origins. - The API rejects the request: Check for duplicate names regardless of case, more than 20 headers, oversized names or values, control characters, or restricted header types.
- A signed URL fails after adding headers: Recompute the HMAC using all repeated
headersparameters in the exact order and encoding used in the URL. - A sign-in page still appears: The API does not perform the site’s interactive login flow. Confirm that the supplied session cookie or token is valid for the requested page and is sent to the correct origin.
