To put a countdown in the actual video feed before a looping YouTube Live broadcast, build both into your encoder scene: in OBS, loop the video with a Media Source, place a countdown source above it, and switch to the unobstructed loop when the countdown ends. YouTube’s native countdown is for Premieres, not a general countdown control for encoder-based Live streams. A scheduled Live trailer is a separate pre-show feature.
Choose the countdown that fits your event
“Countdown before a YouTube Live loop” can mean three different things. The deciding question is whether the countdown must appear in the outgoing live video itself.
| Approach | What viewers see | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Premiere countdown | YouTube’s countdown theme, followed by a scheduled uploaded video | A synchronized release of a prerecorded video where a Premiere watch page and chat suit the event | It is not an overlay on an encoder-based Live stream, and the countdown theme is not part of the video afterward. YouTube’s Premiere guidance explains the feature. |
| Scheduled Live trailer | A trailer on the scheduled stream’s watch page before the broadcast | A pre-show video for an eligible channel | It is a trailer, not a countdown documented to overlay the live feed. Eligibility applies. YouTube’s Live stream settings help describes the trailer. |
| Encoder countdown overlay | A countdown composed into the live output, then the looping video | A real YouTube Live broadcast where the opening sequence must be part of the live feed | Requires an encoder scene and a countdown source; OBS’s documentation describes media and text building blocks, not a native configurable countdown widget. |
For a countdown that viewers see as part of the Live broadcast, use the encoder method below. For an uploaded video that everyone should start watching together, schedule a Premiere instead.
Build the countdown and loop in OBS
Prepare the loop and countdown
Have the video file you want to repeat and a countdown source ready. The countdown may be a prepared video, graphic, text source, or another timer implementation you have verified. Plan what happens at zero: the countdown source must end, be hidden, or be switched off so the loop beneath it becomes visible.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Create the looping scene
- In OBS, create or select the scene for your broadcast.
- Add a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop in its properties. OBS documents this setting as repeating the file after playback completes. See OBS Media Sources.
- If your content is a playlist rather than one file, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. OBS says VLC must be installed for this source to appear.
Layer and end the countdown
- Add the countdown visual or text as another source in the same scene and place it above the Media Source in the source order.
- Set up a reliable transition at zero: for example, use a countdown video that ends and is hidden, or switch to a second scene containing only the loop. Check that the loop is already playing underneath or starts cleanly at the transition.
- Do not assume OBS includes a built-in countdown timer. Its Sources Guide documents text and media sources, but not a native countdown widget. If you use a script, plugin, or imported timer asset, verify its behavior and how it resets before relying on it.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled stream in Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder’s stream settings, then start streaming from OBS. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or the outgoing scene.
- Preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room and check both audio and video before starting the event.
Test the handoff before going public
Test the full sequence in a local preview or an unlisted/private setup: countdown appears, reaches zero, disappears, and reveals the loop with the intended audio. Also check that the loop actually repeats and that the countdown does not restart unexpectedly. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead, starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event, previewing in Live Control Room, and checking audio and video; these are platform recommendations, not requirements.
A scheduled Live stream can appear as upcoming so viewers can opt into a notification for when it is about to begin. That notification is distinct from a countdown embedded in the live feed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Use a Premiere countdown instead
If the event is a prerecorded upload rather than an encoder-based Live broadcast, YouTube’s Premiere feature may be the simpler choice. Upload the video, schedule it as public, select Set as Premiere, then choose Set up Premiere to select the countdown theme and length. YouTube says its countdown theme starts at the scheduled time for the chosen duration; viewers then watch the video together. The countdown is a presentation around the Premiere, not footage added to the uploaded file. See Customize your Premiere and Premiere a new video.
Use a scheduled Live trailer for a pre-show
A trailer can play on the watch page before a scheduled Live stream begins, but it is not documented as a countdown overlay in the stream itself. YouTube’s help page lists eligibility as more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes, and says a trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long. Requirements and Studio labels can change, so check the current eligibility and interface in YouTube Studio. See Manage live stream settings.

Keep rights and monetization in mind
Use video and audio you have permission to stream, including any countdown music or graphics. A looping format does not remove copyright considerations. Also assess whether the overall channel and stream meet YouTube’s applicable monetization policies; the setup instructions for a loop do not guarantee monetization eligibility.
Troubleshoot a countdown or loop that does not work
- The countdown is not visible in the Live feed: You may be using a Premiere countdown or Live trailer, which are separate from an encoder overlay. Put the countdown source in the OBS scene sent to YouTube.
- The video stops after one play: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, confirm you are using VLC Video and have enabled Loop Playlist.
- The loop remains covered after zero: Check the source order and the countdown’s end behavior. Hide or end the countdown source, or transition to a scene without it.
- The countdown starts over unexpectedly: Check whether the timer source or scene is being reset when switching scenes. Test repeated transitions before the event.
- YouTube does not receive the encoder feed: Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS against the scheduled stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- The feed is connected but the event is not ready: Preview in Live Control Room and check audio and video before starting the broadcast. YouTube recommends allowing time to prepare and preview the encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps a pre-recorded loop live without leaving OBS or a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops it from the cloud. It does not go live from a camera.
