There is no single documented cause for Reg-suit’s “authentication failed” message. To find the cause, inspect the complete AWS error, confirm the identity the Reg-suit process actually uses, check its S3 permissions, and verify the S3 publisher configuration and target bucket.
What the error does—and does not—tell you
Reg-suit’s S3 publisher retrieves earlier snapshot images and uploads current snapshots and comparison reports to an S3 bucket. The job therefore needs credentials that resolve to an AWS identity with access to that bucket. Reg-suit’s documentation does not map the exact phrase “authentication failed” to one specific cause. The text alone cannot tell you whether AWS rejected the credentials, the identity lacks permission for an operation, or another setting is wrong. Start with the full error and job logs rather than changing permissions by guesswork.
Reg-suit documents the S3 publisher’s configuration and required operations in its S3 plugin documentation and project documentation.
Work through these checks in order

Confirm the S3 publisher and bucket
Open
regconfig.jsonand inspect itspluginssection. Confirm that it contains the S3 publisher and that itsbucketNameresolves to the bucket intended for this job. Identify the credentials available to that process
A Reg-suit demo shows credentials supplied through
AWS_ACCESS_KEY_IDandAWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY, or through a[default]profile in~/.aws/credentials. These are examples, not a requirement to use long-lived keys in every environment. In CI, establish which identity and role context the Reg-suit process actually receives using your platform’s safe identity-inspection mechanisms. Do not print secret values into logs.For local runs, check whether the process can access the intended credentials or profile. For CI runs, confirm that the credentials or role are configured for the job and inherited by the command that invokes Reg-suit; a developer’s local AWS identity does not establish what the CI job uses.

Compare the failed operation with the documented S3 actions
The plugin README lists these S3 actions:
s3:DeleteObject,s3:GetObject,s3:GetObjectAcl,s3:PutObject,s3:PutObjectAcl, ands3:ListBucket. Treat this as a reference for the plugin’s documented operations, not proof that a particular action caused your failure.Use the operation named in the full error or logs to compare the effective identity’s permissions with bucket-level access rules. Check applicable identity and bucket controls before changing policy. Grant only the permissions supported by the operation you have identified; avoid broad access as a diagnostic shortcut.

Review S3 client options and the complete error
The plugin exposes optional
sdkOptionsfor its S3 client. If your configuration sets them, verify they match the job environment and intended bucket. The cited Reg-suit documentation does not identify a region or SDK-option mismatch as a confirmed cause of this exact message, so consider these configuration checks—not a diagnosis by themselves.Capture the complete AWS error object and relevant job-log context: the failed operation, the identity used by the job, and the configuration values that are safe to share. Keep keys, tokens, and other secrets out of logs. Those details help distinguish an invalid or unavailable credential from an authorization problem or a different configuration issue.

Choose a credential path that fits where the job runs
The Reg-suit demo documents environment credentials and a shared credentials file. Neither is established as the best method for every project. Choose based on the job’s environment, how credentials are provisioned and rotated, and whether the Reg-suit process can access the intended configuration.
- Environment variables: confirm the job sets the expected variables and that the Reg-suit process inherits them. Avoid exposing their values in logs.
- Shared credentials file: confirm the file is available to the process and contains the profile the job is configured to use. A local
[default]profile is not automatically available in a CI environment.
When the checks do not resolve it
Do not infer a root cause from the title or one short error phrase. Keep the full AWS error, failed operation, effective CI identity, resolved publisher configuration, and target bucket together while investigating. Then compare the identified operation with that identity’s permissions and the bucket’s applicable access rules. If the error does not identify the operation or credential context, use the AWS and CI tooling available in your environment to establish those details before editing policy.

Reg-suit also documents Google Cloud Storage as a publisher option, but changing storage providers is a project-level choice, not a shortcut for diagnosing an S3 access failure.
