Start with Browserless’s built-in consent blocker: add blockConsentModals=true to a supported screenshot or PDF request, or enable it for a BrowserQL session. It defaults to false. If the banner remains, click the page’s actual visible consent control or inject CSS to hide its element before capture. The right fallback depends on whether you need a real consent action or only a cleaner image.

Try Browserless’s built-in consent blocker first

For supported Browserless flows, blockConsentModals=true is the simplest first step: it is intended to automatically detect and dismiss cookie consent banners without requiring you to know each site’s selectors. Browserless documents the setting for BrowserQL and the REST /screenshot and /pdf APIs; it is off by default.

The REST screenshot example uses a request to /screenshot?token=...&blockConsentModals=true. The endpoint accepts a POST with a target URL and optional screenshot settings, so use the request format and authentication appropriate to your integration. See the Browserless cookie-consent example and REST launch parameters.

For BrowserQL, enable the parameter in the appropriate launch or session configuration. The exact surrounding request differs between REST and BrowserQL; do not assume the REST query-string example is itself a BrowserQL request. Browserless lists the setting in its BrowserQL launch parameters.

Use a site-specific click when automatic handling misses

If a banner remains, inspect the rendered page and identify its actual consent button. Browserless’s BrowserQL example navigates to the page, checks for a visible selector, clicks a match, then captures after the page settles. One illustrative selector is [id*=accept], [class*=accept], button[id*=cookie]; treat it only as a starting point, not a universal selector. Browserless specifically notes that platforms such as OneTrust and CookieBot can require custom handling.

await page.goto('https://example.com');
const accept = await page.$('[id*=accept], [class*=accept], button[id*=cookie]');
if (accept && await accept.isVisible()) {
  await accept.click();
}
await page.waitForLoadState('networkidle');
// Take the screenshot using your Browserless flow.

This is a generic Playwright-style illustration of the interaction, not a complete Browserless REST or BrowserQL request. Use the syntax supported by your chosen Browserless integration and its current runtime. Browserless’s documented example uses a visible-selector check and waitUntil: networkIdle; network idle is a timing strategy, not a guarantee that every site has finished all relevant work. Refer to the official example for the BrowserQL flow.

Be conservative with broad selectors: an “accept” match could refer to an unrelated button, and a cookie-related selector may not be the consent action. Confirm the matched element is visible and represents the choice you intend to make, then inspect the resulting screenshot.

Hide the banner with CSS when only appearance matters

If the aim is visual suppression rather than recording a consent choice, inject a style targeting the known banner selector before capture. Browserless documents addStyleTag / add_style_tag as a practical way to hide cookie banners or sticky headers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
await page.addStyleTag({
  content: '.cookie-banner { display: none !important; }'
});
// Take the screenshot using your Browserless flow.

Replace .cookie-banner with the selector for the actual element on the target page. Hiding it with CSS changes what is rendered; it does not accept, reject, or save the site’s consent choice. Check that the selector hides only the intended overlay and does not remove page content. See Browserless’s BAP page-setup guidance.

Choose the right approach

Approach Use it when Important limitation
blockConsentModals=true You want Browserless’s built-in handling and the banner is supported. A site-specific or unsupported banner may remain.
Click a visible consent control The page needs an interaction and you can identify the correct button. Selectors vary by site; a broad match can click the wrong control.
Inject CSS You need a clean visual capture and know the banner selector. It hides the element only; it does not make a consent choice.

Workflow for reliable captures

  1. Enable the built-in setting. Set blockConsentModals=true on a supported REST screenshot/PDF request or BrowserQL session.
  2. Check the result. If the banner is still visible, inspect the rendered page and determine whether the correct remedy is a click or visual-only CSS suppression.
  3. Apply the narrowest fallback. Click the verified consent control if the page needs an interaction; otherwise hide only the known banner element with injected CSS.
  4. Wait and capture. Allow the page to settle using an appropriate wait strategy, then take the screenshot and inspect it for both the banner and unintended page changes.
  5. Separate consent handling from access failures. If the image is blank, a CAPTCHA, or an access-denied page, the problem is not necessarily the banner. Browserless documents its Unblock API as a separate path for automation-blocking cases in the Screenshot API documentation.

Browserless offers these workflows through REST endpoints and BrowserQL; BAP is its TypeScript/Python SDK layer over BrowserQL. Use the integration already present in your application rather than assuming one language or layer has different banner-handling capability. See the BAP overview.

Troubleshooting

  • The banner is still there: Confirm the parameter is enabled in the correct REST or BrowserQL configuration. If it is, inspect the page and add a site-specific visible selector or CSS rule.
  • The wrong button was clicked: Replace the broad selector with the exact visible consent control found in the rendered markup. Verify the page state after the click.
  • The CSS rule does nothing: The selector may not match the rendered banner, or the style may be injected too early or into the wrong page context. Inspect the element and inject the rule before taking the screenshot.
  • The screenshot has no banner, but consent was not saved: That is expected when you used CSS. CSS only changes appearance; use a real consent control when the page must receive a choice.
  • The capture shows a CAPTCHA, blank page, or access denied: Treat this as an automation or load problem, not a cookie-banner problem. Browserless describes the Unblock API separately; consult its Screenshot API documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want the capture handled through a single request, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative screenshot API. Its capture flow removes known cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; it also reports whether a page failed, was blank, hit a bot check, or was a cache hit, and only clean shots are billed. It provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents.
