To keep a webpage’s dark colors in a PDF, open the browser’s print preview and turn on its background-printing option—often called Print backgrounds or Background graphics. Check the preview before saving. If you control the webpage, use print-specific CSS and set print-color-adjust: exact on the elements whose colors matter. That asks the browser to preserve them; it cannot force the result.
Why dark mode can disappear in a PDF
A browser displays a webpage using its screen styles, but printing—including saving to PDF—can use different CSS rules. Browsers may also change colors or omit backgrounds to improve readability or save ink. As a result, a dark page can print with a white background, even if it looked correct in the tab. MDN explains how print media styles can make output differ from the screen; its guidance on print-color-adjust describes the browser’s color adjustments.
The browser’s own dark theme is a separate setting from the website’s colors. Changing Chrome’s interface theme does not tell a website how to style its printed output. Chrome’s dark-mode help covers the browser theme, while the page’s print appearance depends on its styles and the print controls.
Save the page with dark backgrounds in a browser
- Open print preview. Use the browser’s Print command, then inspect the preview rather than relying on the page’s dark appearance in its tab.
- Enable background printing. Look for a setting such as Print backgrounds, Background graphics, or a color option. In Firefox, choose Save to PDF as the destination and enable Print backgrounds under More settings, as described in Mozilla’s Firefox printing instructions.
- Check contrast and layout. Confirm that text remains readable over the dark background, that important content is present, and that page breaks are acceptable.
- Save the PDF. If the preview still drops or changes the colors, try another browser’s print preview. The saved file—not just the preview—is the result to verify.
Keeping large dark areas can increase a PDF’s file size and use more ink if you later print it on paper. The W3C CSS Color Adjustment specification explains that browsers can adapt colors for print and that user preferences matter.

If you control the webpage: set print styles
Use an @media print rule to define the layout and colors intended for printed output, including PDFs. Apply print-color-adjust: exact to the elements whose paired foreground and background colors should remain intact. For broader compatibility, authors commonly include the prefixed form as well:

}Replace .dark-panel with the selector for the relevant part of your page. Put the intended print colors in the print rule if screen styles do not produce the right PDF layout. The property signals that the chosen colors are deliberate; it is not a guarantee. The browser and user print settings can still affect output. Inspect print CSS before opening the dialog
In Chrome DevTools, emulate print media to inspect how the page’s print rules affect it. Chrome documents this in Emulate CSS media features. For page margins and other paged output details, see Chrome’s print-margins guide. Emulation helps with debugging, but still check the actual print preview and PDF.
Troubleshooting dark PDFs
- The background is white or missing: Enable the print dialog’s background option, then reopen or refresh the preview. If you maintain the page, check whether an
@media printrule overrides its background. - Text becomes hard to read: Adjust the foreground and background colors as a pair in the print stylesheet. Preview the result before sharing or printing.
- The tab is dark but the PDF is not: The browser theme does not establish the webpage’s print styles. Use the print background control or add page-specific print CSS if you can edit the site.
- The PDF still differs after setting
print-color-adjust: exact: That property is a hint, not a force switch. Check the browser’s print settings and test another browser; user choices and browser decisions can still change the output. - The layout is wrong even when colors are right: Inspect the page under print media and adjust its
@media printrules. A print stylesheet can define a layout distinct from the screen version.
