Then compare the same page in local Chromium and BrowserCat. A difference can point to remote font availability or browser-version differences, but BrowserCat’s public configuration documentation does not specify installed fonts or a customer font-install option. If the page is correct locally and wrong remotely, ask BrowserCat support what fonts its current backend provides and whether it can be configured.
Why Devanagari can look different in a BrowserCat screenshot
BrowserCat’s documented Playwright workflow connects to a cloud browser session and captures a page in Chromium. Text rendering depends not just on the CSS font-family declaration but also on the fonts available to that browser and its fallback choices. Chrome’s font settings documentation says language can affect font selection when the page specifies one, and Chromium’s rendering overview describes font fallback as part of rendering text runs.
BrowserCat’s public browser configuration documentation describes browser selection, launch arguments, user preferences, and proxy options, but does not document the installed system fonts or a way for customers to install fonts in the remote runtime. That documentation gap does not rule out an option available through support.
A Chromium change dated March 4, 2026 adds Devanagari defaults for Linux and ChromeOS: Noto Sans Devanagari for standard and sans-serif, Noto Serif Devanagari for serif, and Noto Sans Mono for fixed. The change says that before it, Chromium had no configured Devanagari defaults and used generic system font resolution. This is version-specific evidence, not confirmation that BrowserCat has deployed that Chromium version or has those font files installed.

Diagnose the page before changing the browser
- Check the original text. Inspect the page’s DOM text and confirm it contains the intended Unicode Devanagari characters. If the text is already corrupted in the DOM, a screenshot cannot repair it; fix the source content or encoding.
- Set the language accurately. Use the appropriate language tag on the document or the specific content element, for example
lang="hi"for Hindi text. Apply the correct tag for the actual language rather than treating Devanagari as a language. Language metadata can influence font selection. - Review the font stack. Inspect the CSS that applies to the affected text. A stack should include suitable Devanagari-capable fonts and a sensible fallback, but naming a font in CSS does not make it available in a remote browser. Avoid relying on a local-only font unless it is also available to the capture environment.
- Inspect the font actually used. In local browser developer tools, inspect the rendered font for the affected text run, not just the declared CSS family. Fallback can select a different font from the one at the beginning of the stack.
Compare local Chromium with BrowserCat
Capture the same URL in local Chromium and BrowserCat with conditions as similar as possible. Keep the browser version equivalent if you can determine it, and match viewport, device scale, page state, and wait condition. Check both the screenshot and the rendered font for the same Devanagari text.
- Broken in both captures: investigate the page’s text, language metadata, CSS, and font loading first.
- Correct locally but broken in BrowserCat: the difference points toward the remote runtime, its available fonts, or its browser version. It does not by itself identify which one is responsible.
- BrowserCat output varies between runs: check whether the page has finished loading its fonts and dynamic content before capture, then repeat under matched conditions.
Do not assume switching BrowserCat’s documented Chrome or Chromium choice will fix the issue; the available evidence does not establish that either choice has a different suitable font configuration.

Ask BrowserCat about the remote runtime
If your local capture renders correctly and BrowserCat’s does not, send BrowserCat support a concise reproduction. Include:
- A minimal URL or page that shows the affected text.
- The exact Devanagari string and a screenshot of the incorrect result.
- The browser choice and version, if available, plus viewport and capture conditions.
- Whether the same URL renders correctly in local Chromium.
- The page’s language attribute and relevant CSS font stack.
Ask whether the current backend has Noto Sans Devanagari or another suitable Devanagari font, and whether BrowserCat supports a way to request or configure one. Its reviewed public configuration docs do not answer those backend-specific questions.

Retest the glyphs after a change
After correcting page metadata, CSS, font loading, or a supported remote setting, capture the same page again under the same conditions. Inspect the actual screenshot for the affected conjuncts, vowel signs, and reordered marks; a successful page load alone does not confirm correct shaping.
