If your YouTube Live stream keeps disconnecting, first check YouTube’s stream-health message and your encoder’s output; then test the connection’s upload capacity at the streaming location. Leave enough bandwidth headroom, reduce bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain your settings, and contact your ISP if the encoder is healthy but outbound tests show a connection problem. YouTube’s guidance is general, not a diagnosis of any particular Indian provider.
Diagnose where the disconnect is happening
Before changing router settings or switching providers, compare YouTube’s stream-health reports, the encoder, viewers’ reports, and the broadband connection. These clues help narrow the problem; none is conclusive on its own.
Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open the Live Dashboard or Live Control Room and check the health indicator, error messages, and timestamps. YouTube classifies red errors as critical—they may prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems—and yellow errors as moderate, potentially degrading quality. A timestamp can help you match a reported problem to encoder or network events. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide and live-stream error-message guide explain these indicators.

- If one viewer reports trouble, their device or internet connection may be responsible.
- If several viewers using the same shared network report trouble, investigate that viewer network.
- If viewers on different connections report problems, the encoder may be involved.
These are diagnostic clues from YouTube, not guarantees about the cause.

Check the encoder before changing the broadband setup
Inspect the picture and audio in the encoder, review its errors, check CPU load, and make sure the encoder is up to date. If the local output is healthy but the YouTube stream still has trouble, test the outbound connection next. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking both the encoder and the internet connection.
Test upload capacity at the streaming location
A broadband plan’s download headline does not tell you whether it can reliably send a live stream. YouTube notes that inbound bandwidth is often greater than outbound bandwidth; test upload capacity against the stream’s total bitrate. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the encoder. YouTube’s streaming tips state that the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth.

Allow headroom for bitrate variation and shared use
YouTube recommends leaving 20% room beyond the total bitrate being sent, including primary and backup streams. As a practical check, multiply the total bitrate by 1.2 and compare that figure with the upload capacity you can sustain—not just a brief peak from a speed test. If other household or office users are active, retest under those realistic conditions. YouTube’s guidance supports the 20% margin; it does not guarantee stability at a particular broadband-plan speed.

Repeat the test when the issue usually occurs
Measure from the place and connection used for streaming, and repeat at the time of day when disconnects normally happen. If possible, pause large uploads, downloads, backups, or other high-traffic use during a test. A wired Ethernet connection can be a useful comparison if both the computer and router have Ethernet ports; this is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed fix or a specific YouTube requirement.

Match encoder settings to the connection
If upload capacity is not sufficient for the selected settings, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again. YouTube’s recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in its encoder settings and bitrate table. For H.264, YouTube lists 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not a promise that a connection with that measured speed will be stable; leave the recommended headroom above the total bitrate.
Check the format as well as the network
YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings page for the row that matches your video configuration.

An error about stream format, bitrate, codec, or audio settings is not fixed by a faster speed test. YouTube’s live-stream error guide identifies incorrect bitrate and unsupported or incorrect codec and audio configurations as possible ingestion problems. For its “Incorrect stream format” guidance, YouTube describes H.264 video and AAC audio as expected settings; check the error message and supported-format instructions before changing encoder settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun a test stream and monitor it live
- Set the encoder to a configuration appropriate for your resolution, frame rate, codec, and sustained upload capacity.
- Make a pre-stream test that includes audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. A static image or silent test may not expose issues that appear during the event.
- Start the stream and watch the YouTube Live Dashboard or Live Control Room health indicator and messages. Note their timestamps and compare them with the encoder’s own logs.
- If the encoder looks healthy but the outbound connection test continues to show a problem, give the ISP your test results and the times of the interruptions. YouTube directs users to contact their ISP when connection testing indicates trouble.
YouTube recommends testing before the event and monitoring stream health while live. Its error-message guide also advises considering a lower resolution when bandwidth is insufficient.

Apply the checks to Indian broadband
The same diagnostic sequence applies whether the connection is fiber, cable, fixed wireless, or another broadband service: measure outbound capacity and stability at the encoder, account for shared use, and retest when the issue occurs. If those tests are poor while the encoder’s local output is healthy, share the results and timestamps with your ISP. The available YouTube guidance does not identify a particular Indian ISP, state, city, router, or broadband plan as a general cause of disconnects.
There is no evidence here for a universal DNS change, VPN, router setting, or provider switch that fixes YouTube Live disconnects. Try a wired-versus-Wi-Fi comparison only as a way to isolate the local wireless link; it cannot repair an ISP-side outage or inadequate capacity, and it will not correct a codec or bitrate error.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| Symptom | What it may indicate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows a red or yellow health error | A critical or moderate stream issue; the message and timestamp help identify its category. | Open the error details, compare the timestamp with encoder logs, and follow the relevant YouTube guidance. |
| Viewers on one shared network report playback trouble | A problem on that viewer network may be involved. | Compare with reports from viewers on other connections. |
| Viewers on different connections report trouble | The encoder may be involved, though the clue is not definitive. | Inspect encoder output, errors, CPU load, and configuration. |
| Local encoder output looks and sounds healthy, but the stream falters | The outbound connection may not sustain the stream. | Test upload at the streaming location, include shared use, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Health message mentions bitrate or format | Encoder settings may be incorrect or unsupported. | Check the matching bitrate, codec, and audio guidance in YouTube’s current settings and error pages. |
