Verdict: Contabo could host an always-on YouTube streaming setup, but its published VPS specifications do not prove that any particular plan can encode and sustain your stream around the clock. Shared vCPU capacity, fair-use limits, monitoring and recovery all matter. YouTube also warns that a live stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, so keeping a live feed running and preserving a complete replay are separate problems.
Is Contabo suitable for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
It is a plausible hosting option, not a verified 24/7 streaming solution. Contabo’s US Core VPS plans advertise between 4 and 18 vCPU cores, 8–96 GB RAM, 100–600 GB SSD storage, and port speeds from 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s. Those are published specifications, not evidence of sustained performance for a particular encoder or workload. The listed prices are monthly rates tied to a displayed 24-month term; confirm current plan names, pricing, taxes, term and availability on Contabo’s VPS pricing page before ordering.
Contabo’s VPS documentation says its KVM-based virtual servers use shared vCPU cores and fixed RAM allocation. A plan’s virtual core count therefore does not establish dedicated CPU performance or guarantee that a software encoder can maintain a chosen resolution continuously. No published evidence here demonstrates a specific Contabo plan reliably encoding a particular stream 24/7.
For a stream that is already encoded and only needs to be sent to YouTube, the work differs from encoding video on the VPS. In either case, the relevant question is whether your complete setup—including encoding if applicable, upload stability, monitoring and recovery—holds up during a sustained test.

Network capacity: advertised port speed is not a guarantee
Contabo says its VPS products have no default bandwidth limit, but “unlimited” does not mean unrestricted sustained outbound throughput. Its fair-use policy requires usage to remain consistent with typical server workloads and allows throttling when use is exceptionally high or disruptive. Contabo says it will notify customers if use exceeds the policy and work with them on a solution. Read the current fair-use terms rather than treating the advertised port speed or traffic policy as a throughput guarantee.
YouTube’s recommended video bitrates are far below the listed port speeds, but that comparison is only a starting point. A port rating does not demonstrate stable, sustained throughput to YouTube. Leave headroom, monitor stream health, and test from the VPS and region you plan to use.

These bitrate recommendations are from YouTube’s encoding settings; targets vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for your exact format and check stream health while testing.

- Protocol: RTMPS.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: a two-second interval, not exceeding four seconds.
- Bitrate: use the recommendation for the exact codec, resolution and frame rate rather than choosing a rate solely from the VPS port rating.
Before relying on the VPS for a long-running channel, test the complete path: encoder output, VPS resource use, outbound connection, YouTube Live Control Room preview, audio and video quality, and stream health. A VPS does not replace a monitoring or recovery plan.
YouTube’s archive limit changes the meaning of “always on”
A continuously available live feed does not necessarily produce a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. If replay preservation matters, plan for recording and for restarting or segmenting the live stream; do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will become one complete archive.

Starting a stream also depends on channel eligibility. YouTube’s basic prerequisites include a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Follow its live streaming help and operational guidance to test the encoder, check the Live Control Room preview, monitor audio and video, and verify archive files.

How to decide whether a Contabo plan fits
There is no evidence-based universal “best plan” for this workload. Compare the plan against the actual stream and the service conditions, then run a sustained test before treating it as production-ready.

- Encoding workload: Decide whether the VPS will encode video or transmit an already encoded feed. Shared vCPUs make an actual workload test especially important if software encoding is involved.
- Output target: Set the codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate first, using YouTube’s current guidance.
- Network headroom: Compare the target bitrate with the advertised port speed, while recognizing that the advertised speed is not a measured end-to-end guarantee.
- Fair use: Check Contabo’s current policy and account for the possibility of throttling under exceptionally high or disruptive usage.
- Recovery and monitoring: Decide how you will detect a dropped stream, restart it and confirm it has recovered. The VPS itself does not guarantee continuity.
- Archive needs: If you need replays, provide a local recording and a stream segmentation or restart plan in light of YouTube’s 12-hour warning.
- Commercial commitment: Compare the plan’s current price and term, especially because the cited US pricing page displays monthly rates for a 24-month term.
