To compare a screenshot price with a previous price, first confirm that both prices refer to the same product variant and seller offer, then compare the total cost and calculate the change from the previous price. A screenshot proves what was displayed at that moment; it does not, by itself, verify the product’s earlier price or the history between two dates.

What to check before comparing prices

Make the comparison like-for-like. A different size, pack count, condition, seller, or shipping arrangement can make two displayed prices incomparable even when the product names look similar. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises shoppers to note manufacturer and model details, including size and color; Singapore’s Competition and Consumer Commission advises comparing goods consumers or trade norms regard as similar or equivalent.

  • Product: manufacturer and model, size, color, quantity or pack count, and condition.
  • Offer: seller or marketplace seller, currency, and any subscription, membership, coupon, or minimum-purchase requirement.
  • Total cost: item price plus shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and mandatory fees where applicable.
  • Timing and evidence: screenshot capture date, source listing, and the dates covered by any price-history record.

Read the listing description for condition terms such as refurbished, vintage, or close-out. The FTC recommends checking deal terms and comparing total cost; Singapore guidance says disclosed prices should account for subsequent fees. FTC online-shopping guidance and the Singapore price-transparency guidelines explain these points.

How to calculate the difference and percentage decrease

  1. Label each figure. Record the screenshot price and the claimed previous price separately, along with the seller and capture date.
  2. Calculate the absolute difference. Previous price − screenshot price = difference.
  3. Calculate the percentage decrease. (Previous price − screenshot price) ÷ previous price × 100 = percentage decrease relative to the previous price.

For example, if the comparable previous price was $80 and the screenshot price is $60, the difference is $20 and the decrease relative to $80 is 25%. This is an arithmetic example, not a market statistic. If the screenshot price is higher, describe the result as a price increase, not a discount. If the earlier price is unverified, report the two displayed figures and say the claimed discount has not been verified.

Make clear that the previous price is the denominator for the percentage. The result describes the size of the change against that baseline; it does not establish whether the seller’s reference price is genuine.

How to verify what happened between screenshots

Look for dated price history from the retailer or a comparison service, and check that it corresponds to the same seller and offer. Amazon says some product pages may show 30-, 90-, and 365-day history views; availability varies by market and rollout. A history window gives context for that period, but is not automatically proof of a legally valid prior price in every jurisdiction. Amazon’s explanation of its price-history feature describes the available views.

Save or cite the dated record if the comparison will inform a purchase or complaint. Two screenshots show prices at two points; unless the evidence covers the intervening period, do not infer a continuous price path from them.

Why a screenshot does not prove a discount

A screenshot records what a page displayed at a particular moment. It cannot by itself establish that the crossed-out price was genuinely charged, how long it was charged, how many products sold at that price, or what happened between the capture dates. Treat a displayed reduction and a verified historical reduction as different claims.

Rules about price-reduction claims depend on jurisdiction. In the EU, traders announcing a reduction generally must indicate the lowest price applied at least 30 days before the announcement, subject to exceptions. The European Commission’s March 26, 2026 report says that 30% of the 314 online traders checked referenced discounts incorrectly; that figure describes that coordinated check, not all retailers. Your Europe’s unfair-pricing guidance explains the EU consumer rule.

The European Commission’s 2022 sweep illustrates why the reference price matters. One example showed a 40% displayed discount based on a €39.99 reference price, while the preceding 30-day lowest price was €27.99; under the cited EU rule, the discount was 14%. Another showed a price rising from €19.48 to €21.66 while a fictitious €28.81 reference price supported a tag claiming a 24% discount. These are examples from the Commission’s sweep, not typical market rates. The Commission’s 2022 Black Friday sweep has the details.

Australia’s ACCC says a was/now claim may be misleading if the product was not sold at the claimed higher price for a reasonable period, or if only a small proportion sold at that price. Singapore guidance emphasizes a genuine, valid basis for comparisons supported by regular research and records. Do not apply one market’s rule as a universal standard: ACCC price-display guidance and the Singapore guidelines describe their respective contexts.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Comparing different models, variants, pack sizes, conditions, sellers, or currencies as if they were the same offer.
  • Using the item’s headline price while leaving out required shipping, fees, or other charges.
  • Calling a crossed-out price a verified historical price just because it appears in a screenshot.
  • Reporting a percentage without stating that the previous price is its baseline.
  • Assuming a price-history tool covers every market, seller, or date range.
  • Treating the EU 30-day rule as though it applies everywhere.

Capture dated evidence with ScreenshotNeo

If you need a record of a product page as it appears now, ScreenshotNeo can capture a website screenshot. A capture can document the page display, but historical-price verification still requires dated history or other evidence for the relevant period.
