You can test two thumbnails for a 24/7 YouTube stream if YouTube Studio has an eligible saved archive of the broadcast. YouTube documents Test & Compare for live archives—not for the active, continuously running broadcast itself. Open the archive in Studio on a computer and check whether Test & compare is available.

Active broadcast or saved archive: what can you test?

The distinction matters: a live stream may have a saved video archive after it ends, but that archive is not the same as the active broadcast. YouTube’s documentation supports thumbnail experiments on live archives and says scheduled live streams are ineligible for its separate A/B-testing feature. It does not establish that every kind of active 24/7 broadcast can be tested. Whether a particular always-on setup qualifies—including one without an archive or one that repeatedly restarts—depends on what appears in Studio. YouTube’s thumbnail testing help and its A/B-testing eligibility guidance describe the available paths.

For the documented workflow, locate the saved archive associated with your broadcast. If it appears as an eligible video and Studio offers Test & compare, you can test two options there. If you mean the currently running broadcast, don’t assume that its thumbnail can be tested in place.

Check eligibility before preparing thumbnails

  • Use YouTube Studio on a computer; Test & Compare is not available through the documented mobile workflow.
  • Your channel must have advanced features enabled.
  • The test is for eligible public long-form videos and podcast episodes. Private videos and content marked Made for Kids or for mature audiences are among the exclusions listed by YouTube.
  • Live archives may be eligible; scheduled live streams are not eligible for the separate A/B-testing feature. Check the archive itself in Studio, since eligibility can depend on the video and current interface.
  • YouTube permits up to three thumbnail variants, so a two-thumbnail comparison is within the limit.
  • Custom thumbnail uploads require a verified account according to YouTube’s general thumbnail guidance. Check the test-specific eligibility and Studio controls as well.

See YouTube’s Test & compare instructions and custom thumbnail guidance for current requirements.

Run the two-thumbnail test in YouTube Studio

  1. Find the archive. Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer, open the video list, and select the saved archive for the 24/7 stream. Confirm that you have selected the archive rather than an active or scheduled live event.
  2. Open its thumbnail controls. In the video’s details, go to the Thumbnail area and choose Test & compare, if that option is shown.
  3. Prepare two distinct versions. Upload two options that differ enough to test a real creative choice, such as composition or focal point. YouTube cautions that small differences can take longer to produce a clear result. Use high-resolution images: YouTube recommends the highest resolution available, and if any test option is below 720p (1280 × 720), the experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 480p (854 × 480).
  4. Start the experiment. Review the two variants, then start the test in Studio. YouTube shows the selected options across viewers concurrently; this differs from changing a thumbnail at one time and another later.
  5. Wait for the result and read its label. YouTube says results can take a few days or as long as two weeks. The outcome may be Winner (a clear, statistically significant result), Preferred (likely better, but less certain), or None (no strong difference). A low number of impressions or similar thumbnails can make a clear result less likely.
  6. Choose what to keep. If there is no clear winner, YouTube’s documented behavior leaves the first uploaded thumbnail as the default; you can also select a thumbnail manually.

Understand what the experiment measures

YouTube selects a result based on watch-time share, not click-through rate alone. The platform explains that evaluating thumbnails by watch-time share is intended to support creator growth. A thumbnail that attracts clicks is not automatically the experiment winner if those viewers do not continue watching.

Third-party sequential tests can expose different audiences at different times or optimize for CTR alone, so their results may conflict with a concurrent YouTube test. If you change the thumbnail manually and compare later metrics, treat that as observational monitoring—not a controlled A/B test. Timing, audience, title, stream content, and other changes can affect the comparison.

Use live analytics as context

After the test, use YouTube Analytics to understand how the archive performed in the broader viewer funnel. In Analytics, open the Content tab and filter for Live. Review impressions, impressions click-through rate, views, and average view duration for the relevant archive and date range. YouTube defines live impressions as thumbnail displays on YouTube, excluding external sites and apps.

  • Impressions CTR indicates how often viewers watched after seeing the thumbnail. It reflects the thumbnail, title, and stream content together, not the thumbnail in isolation.
  • Average view duration is the average minutes watched per view for the selected content and filters.
  • Like-for-like comparisons are more useful for a continuous channel. Compare streams with the same content format, and account for changes in programming or audience mix during the period.

These analytics help explain performance; they do not replace the native experiment’s watch-time-share result. See YouTube’s Analytics guidance for live streams and thumbnail testing guidance.

When Studio does not offer Test & Compare

If the option is missing, first verify that you are viewing the saved archive on a computer, that the video is public and otherwise eligible, and that advanced features are enabled. If the broadcast has no saved archive, the documented archive-based method may not be available. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish a universal workaround for testing the active 24/7 broadcast itself.

You can still change a thumbnail manually and monitor impressions CTR and average view duration, but do not call a before-and-after comparison an A/B test. Without concurrent exposure, changes over time and differences in audience or stream conditions can affect what you observe.
