If a Microlink screenshot shows a spinner, empty shell, or placeholder, the browser may have captured the page before its JavaScript finished rendering the content you need. The dependable fix is to wait for a page-specific element that proves that content is present, rather than relying on navigation completion or an arbitrary delay.

Choose a signal that proves the page is ready

JavaScript applications can render their useful content after the browser has reached a navigation milestone. A page being loaded is not necessarily the same as a chart, report, or client-side view being ready to capture.

  • Prefer a selector: identify a stable DOM element that appears when the target content has rendered, such as an SVG inside a chart.
  • Use a navigation event as a starting point: waitUntil selects a browser navigation lifecycle event. Pair it with a content-specific selector when that event alone does not prove the application is ready.
  • Use a fixed delay only as a fallback: waitForTimeout waits the same amount of time whether the page is fast or slow. A short delay can miss content; a long one adds avoidable latency.

Microlink’s guide to screenshots of JavaScript-rendered pages demonstrates waiting for .chart svg after domcontentloaded. Replace that illustrative selector with one that represents the content on your page.

Wait for a rendered element with Microlink

The following is Microlink’s documented JavaScript SDK pattern. Set an API key as an environment variable and install the microlink.io package in your project before running it. The example targets a hypothetical report page and has not been tested against that page.

import createClient from 'microlink.io'

const microlink = createClient({
  apiKey: process.env.MICROLINK_API_KEY
})

const { url } = await microlink.screenshot('https://app.example.com/report', {
  waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
  waitForSelector: '.chart svg'
})

console.log(url)

The SDK call requests a screenshot and returns a result containing a URL, as shown in Microlink’s example. Check the current SDK documentation for the response behavior and options that apply to your account before integrating it into production.

Microlink also documents a REST-style URL request using screenshot=true, meta=false, waitUntil=domcontentloaded, and waitForSelector=.chart svg. Use the same readiness logic: the selector should identify the actual content you want, not a generic page wrapper. See Microlink’s Website Screenshot API overview for its API examples.

Handle tabs, expandable panels, and lazy-loaded sections

Content behind a tab or control

If the target is absent until a user action, trigger that action in the capture request and then wait for the element inside the resulting panel. Microlink’s guide demonstrates clicking #tab-revenue and waiting for #panel-revenue canvas. The selector after the click matters: waiting for the tab button only proves that the control exists, not that its chart has rendered.

Content loaded by scrolling

For a lazy-loaded section, use a scroll action to bring it into view, then wait for a target element inside that section. Request a full-page capture as well if the output needs to include the entire document. Microlink documents pre-capture browser actions in its browser automation guide; use its current parameter reference when translating the action sequence into a request.

Choose the capture area and rendering options

Readiness and geometry solve different problems: a wait determines when to capture, while the capture settings determine what part of the page appears in the output.

  • Viewport screenshot: use it when the visible browser area is the desired result. Specify viewport dimensions when the page layout must be consistent.
  • Full-page screenshot: use it when the output should include the full document. For content triggered by scrolling, first bring the relevant area into view and wait for its content.
  • Element screenshot: use it when only a specific element is needed. Microlink’s documentation says screenshot.element waits for its own target to become visible. A separate waitForSelector is useful when taking a viewport or full-page shot and waiting for a different content condition.
  • Device settings: use a device preset or explicit viewport dimensions to reproduce the layout you need. Microlink’s browser automation documentation describes device presets.

Consult Microlink’s screenshot parameter reference for element capture and the current screenshot options. The overview also describes viewport and full-page captures and image types; choose the output format and dimensions to suit the consuming application.

Know when not to wait—or when not to run JavaScript

If the target content is already complete in the initial HTML, an extra wait adds latency without improving readiness. Microlink’s guide also notes that JavaScript can be disabled for static server-rendered pages that do not need scripts. Keep JavaScript enabled for client-rendered applications, and do not disable it when the content you need is produced by scripts.

Timeouts, latency, and failure cases

Microlink’s dynamic-content guide states request timeouts of 30 seconds for its free endpoint and 60 seconds for Pro. These are vendor-published operational limits in the guide, accessed October 3, 2026, not independent performance measurements; verify current limits and your applicable plan before relying on them. Keep navigation, actions, and waits within the request’s available time.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Selector never appears: the selector may be wrong, the content may be blocked, or the application may not have reached the expected state. Confirm the selector in the live page and ensure it represents the rendered target.
  • Network-idle wait does not finish: pages with long-lived requests may never become idle. Prefer a selector tied to the content you need when one is available.
  • Capture is still a spinner or shell: navigation completion did not prove hydration or data loading. Add a content-specific selector wait, or trigger the required interaction before waiting.
  • Capture is slower than necessary: remove waits when the page is already ready at initial load, and avoid unnecessarily long fixed delays.

Or skip the browser setup

If you would rather make one screenshot request than configure browser waits and interactions, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Here is its documented one-call cURL pattern, aimed at the same illustrative report URL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://app.example.com/report -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a fixed wait instead of a selector?

Yes, but it cannot establish that the content is ready; use it only when there is no stable DOM condition to observe.

Does `domcontentloaded` mean a JavaScript app has finished rendering?

No. It is a navigation lifecycle event, so pair it with a selector that proves the target content exists when necessary.
