ScreenshotMachine and Puppeteer are separate ways to capture a website. For a hosted capture, send ScreenshotMachine an HTTP GET request from your Puppeteer-based job; for a screenshot of the page already open in Puppeteer, call Puppeteer’s own page.screenshot(). The official documentation reviewed here does not describe a first-party Puppeteer adapter, so the integration is an HTTP request in your workflow—not a ScreenshotMachine method attached to a Puppeteer page.
Choose which browser state you need to capture
Use ScreenshotMachine for a hosted capture
Call ScreenshotMachine’s API at https://api.screenshotmachine.com/ with your API key, target URL, and capture options. The service performs the hosted capture; Puppeteer can orchestrate the surrounding job, but does not supply the browser page to ScreenshotMachine.
Use Puppeteer for the page it already controls
If you need the state of a page already loaded and manipulated in Puppeteer, use page.screenshot(). Puppeteer documents this method as asynchronous and returning screenshot data (a Promise<Uint8Array> for the documented overload). It does not require a ScreenshotMachine request. The API guide requires key and url. Keep the key in server-side configuration rather than exposing it in public browser code. The example below uses Node’s built-in fetch, percent-encodes the target URL through URLSearchParams, checks the HTTP response, and writes the response body to a file.

Use Puppeteer too, only when the job needs it
A job may use Puppeteer for browser-side preparation or automation, then make the HTTP request above as a separate capture. If the desired output is specifically the browser page Puppeteer has prepared, call page.screenshot() instead. These are different capture paths: ScreenshotMachine’s endpoint does not take a Puppeteer page or inherit its cookies and interactions automatically.
Set dimensions, format, timing, and page interactions
ScreenshotMachine’s API guide documents these request parameters. Supply values as query parameters and encode values containing reserved characters.

Full-page and delayed content
Use a full-height dimension such as 1365xfull when you need the full page. Lazy-loaded images, animations, and other dynamic content may not be ready at the moment of capture. The documented delay setting can give a page extra time, but a fixed wait cannot prove that every element finished loading. Adjust it for the page and verify the resulting image.
Fresh output versus cache reuse
Set cacheLimit to 0 when the job must request a fresh capture rather than accept a cached image. A nonzero limit permits reuse within the chosen age window, which may suit repeated captures where freshness is less important.
Secure and reliable job handling
- Protect credentials: store the API key in an environment variable or server-side secret store. ScreenshotMachine’s guide also documents an optional secret phrase and URL-plus-secret MD5 hash, and recommends protecting requests made from public HTML pages.
- Encode query values: use a URL query builder such as
URLSearchParams, especially for target URLs, cookies, language strings, or user-agent values that contain reserved characters. - Check the response: detect non-success HTTP statuses before saving output. Treat request failures and filesystem write failures as job errors and report them to the caller or retry policy.
- Match extension to format: save
jpg,png, orgifoutput with a corresponding filename extension so downstream tools do not misidentify it. - Choose waiting deliberately: a longer delay can help with late content but adds time to each job; the vendor’s suggested delay is not a rendered-page guarantee.
The cited documentation describes available settings but does not provide a performance benchmark comparing ScreenshotMachine with Puppeteer’s local capture. Choose based on whether you need a hosted URL capture or the exact state of a Puppeteer-controlled page, then account for the required setup and wait time.

Troubleshooting common failures
The API rejects the request
Confirm that the request includes the required key and url, that the key is the customer API key, and that the query values are correctly encoded. Keep the key server-side; requests embedded in public HTML can expose credentials.

The screenshot is stale
Set cacheLimit=0 to request a fresh screenshot. If cache reuse is acceptable, choose a suitable limit within the documented 0–14 day range.
Images or animations are missing
Increase delay within the documented maximum of 10000 milliseconds and inspect the output. The guide gives 2000 ms or more as an example for some full-page captures, but the correct wait depends on the page and does not guarantee completion.

The capture has the wrong size or region
Check the dimension syntax and documented bounds, confirm whether full-page height is needed, and review any zoom or crop settings. Zoom may be ignored for screenshots smaller than typical device dimensions.
The saved file cannot be opened as an image
Check the HTTP status before writing the response, verify that the request format matches the filename extension, and ensure that the output path is writable. Do not assume a failed request body is a valid image.
