You can add overlays to an Xbox stream, but not directly from the console: Xbox does not support browser sources. Use a cloud streaming studio that receives and composites your broadcast, or send the Xbox’s HDMI picture to a PC with a capture card and build the stream in OBS or similar software. The cloud route avoids capture hardware; the PC route gives you more control over scenes and sources.

Choose an overlay workflow

Route Best for What you need Main trade-off
Cloud studio Adding overlays without a capture card or streaming PC A supported Xbox-to-service connection, a web studio, and usually a second device for controls Available destinations, features, and console menus depend on the service and can change.
Capture card and PC software Controlling scenes, sources, and production from a PC Compatible capture card, PC, HDMI connections, and software such as OBS More hardware and setup; verify compatibility and desired resolution, refresh rate, and passthrough before buying.
Xbox-to-PC Companion app Trying PC broadcast software without a capture card A compatible Xbox and Windows setup using the Companion app window as a capture source Compatibility and performance depend on the particular setup; it is not guaranteed to work for every game or system.

Cloud services such as Streamlabs and Lightstream are described in the linked documentation. Their current product names, destination support, eligibility, and plan terms should be checked with the provider. The documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal current price comparison.

Add overlays with a cloud studio

This route sends the Xbox broadcast to a supported cloud service, where the service combines gameplay with overlay elements. It does not require a capture card. Because Streamlabs has published separate Xbox workflows, follow the guide matching the exact product and console menu available to you rather than combining steps from different versions.

Set up the project and overlay

  1. On a phone, tablet, or computer, open the selected provider’s web studio and create a project or scene.
  2. Choose a theme and position or resize the available components, such as text, alerts, chat, and webcam. Preview the composition before streaming. Components vary by service and route.
  3. Connect the Xbox broadcast using the provider’s currently supported console workflow. Streamlabs’ April 25, 2025 Studio guide describes installing or opening the Twitch app on Xbox, authenticating a Twitch account, and choosing the app’s Broadcast option. Use the separate June 13, 2026 Console update if that is the Streamlabs product and menu offered to you: enable cloud broadcasting, then choose Streamlabs under Capture and Share > Live streaming > More options. The update says the Twitch Xbox app is viewer-only for that route.
  4. Use the web studio or a second device to confirm the stream and manage scenes or controls. In the documented Studio workflow, chat and alerts are not shown on the television, so keep another device available if you need to monitor them.
  5. Check the service’s current instructions and the labels on your Xbox before going live; menu names and supported routes may change.

Lightstream is another cloud-studio option identified in Xsolla’s overlay documentation: it describes sending the console stream to Lightstream, adding elements in its web editor, and sending the combined stream to Twitch. Confirm current console destination availability and plan requirements with the service before relying on that path.

Add overlays with a capture card and OBS

A capture card carries the Xbox’s HDMI picture to the PC so broadcast software can combine gameplay with overlay sources and send the finished scene live.

  1. Connect the Xbox HDMI output to a compatible capture card, then connect the card to the PC. If you need a display passthrough or a specific resolution and refresh rate, verify that the card supports those requirements before purchase.
  2. Open OBS or other broadcast software and add the capture card as a video-capture source. Confirm that gameplay appears in the preview.
  3. Add overlay elements to the scene. These may be image, video, text, or alert sources supported by your software. For a hosted overlay, copy its URL and add it as a Browser source.
  4. Arrange the gameplay and overlay sources, check that important content is not obscured, and preview the scene before streaming from the PC software.

Xsolla’s overlay documentation gives 1920 x 1080 pixels as its editor’s default canvas and instructs users to match the OBS browser-source width and height to the overlay. That is an overlay canvas default, not a requirement that your Xbox stream use that resolution.

Try the Companion app only if it fits your setup

Streamlabs also documents a PC method that connects Xbox to a Windows PC and selects the Windows Companion app window as the Game Capture source. Treat this as a compatibility-dependent alternative, not a promise that every Xbox, Windows version, or game will work. The capture-card method is the documented route when you need to bring the console’s HDMI output into PC production software.

Decide what to prepare before you go live

  • Destination: Confirm the service supports the platform where you intend to broadcast. The described Streamlabs Xbox steps are Twitch workflows; do not assume a route supports another destination.
  • Control device: For a cloud setup, have a phone or computer ready for studio controls and chat where required.
  • Overlay readability: Preview text, alerts, and webcam placement against gameplay so essential information stays visible.
  • Hardware fit: For a capture-card workflow, check compatibility with your Xbox and PC, along with passthrough, resolution, and refresh-rate needs.
  • Account and service steps: Authenticate the required accounts and follow the current service guide; cloud product eligibility and console menus can change.

Troubleshoot common Xbox overlay problems

  • The Xbox itself has no browser-source option: This is expected. Xbox consoles do not support adding browser sources directly; use a cloud studio or capture the HDMI output on a PC.
  • The overlay does not appear in OBS: Check that the browser-source URL is correct, that the source dimensions match the overlay canvas, and that the source is visible and layered over gameplay in the scene.
  • The capture-card picture is missing: Recheck the Xbox-to-card HDMI connection, the card-to-PC connection, and that the card is selected as the video-capture source in the broadcast software.
  • The cloud studio cannot see the Xbox broadcast: Confirm you are following instructions for the exact Streamlabs product and console route you are using. The older Studio guide’s Twitch-app flow and the newer Console update’s menu flow are distinct; do not mix them.
  • You cannot see chat or alerts on the TV: In Streamlabs’ documented Studio workflow, chat and alerts are managed on another device rather than displayed on the television. Keep the web studio open on a phone or computer.
  • The Companion app method does not capture a game: That path depends on Xbox, Windows, and game compatibility. Consider the documented HDMI capture-card route if the app-window capture does not work with your setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a different need—keeping a pre-recorded YouTube channel live continuously—StreamNeo is a separate cloud service, not an Xbox overlay studio. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from its cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not broadcast a camera feed.
