For a pre-recorded animation loop, use the frame rate it was authored or rendered at. If you are creating a new, mostly low-motion loop, 30 fps is a sensible starting point; choose 60 fps when the movement visibly benefits from smoother temporal sampling and your encoder and upload connection can sustain YouTube’s bitrate recommendation. YouTube supports live streaming up to 60 fps, but does not prescribe a special rate for animation loops.
Choose the frame rate that preserves the animation
YouTube’s upload guidance says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” It lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps as common rates. For an existing animation, start with its authored or exported rate rather than converting it just to select a larger number. Converting 30 fps footage to 60 fps does not create additional original motion detail. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings
When 30 fps makes sense
For a new loop with slow movement or little motion, 30 fps is a practical default. This is a production recommendation, not a YouTube rule: the official guidance does not identify an ideal frame rate for animation loops.
When to choose 60 fps
Use 60 fps when the animation has fast, fluid, or finely timed movement that benefits from more temporal samples—and when the animation is actually authored or rendered with 60 distinct frames per second. YouTube permits live video up to 60 fps. The higher rate can require a higher bitrate and more processing; it is not automatically better for every loop. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Compare 30 fps and 60 fps before rendering
| Question | Prefer 30 fps when… | Consider 60 fps when… |
|---|---|---|
| What is the source rate? | The animation was authored or rendered at 30 fps. | The animation contains 60 distinct frames per second. |
| How does the motion look? | Movement is slow, subtle, or largely static. | Fast or precisely timed movement looks noticeably smoother with more temporal samples. |
| Can the stream sustain the setting? | Your chosen codec and resolution fit the corresponding bitrate recommendation. | Your encoder and upload connection can sustain the higher-rate target for your codec and resolution. |
| Does the stream work in practice? | Test the actual loop and confirm the preview and stream health look correct at the selected settings. | |
Match bitrate and keyframes to the stream
Bitrate recommendations depend on resolution, codec, and frame rate. YouTube’s current live encoder table, accessed in 2026, lists the following video bitrate examples. These are ingestion settings, not guarantees about the experience every viewer will receive; check YouTube’s table when configuring a stream because platform settings can change. YouTube live encoder settings
| Resolution and rate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames. If you change the frame rate, keep the interval at two seconds in time rather than keeping the same frame count. YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; it recommends RTMPS. Confirm codec availability and settings in your encoder and YouTube’s current guidance.

Set up and test the live stream
- Check the source: Find the animation’s authored or export frame rate and resolution. Keep its frame rate if possible; for a new, mostly low-motion loop, begin at 30 fps.
- Choose the live settings: Select the resolution, frame rate, and supported codec in your encoder. Use the matching bitrate recommendation in YouTube’s live settings table.
- Set keyframes: Configure a two-second interval, never exceeding four seconds.
- Connect the encoder: Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions to create or select the live stream and enter its stream key in your encoder. Treat the key as private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to that stream.
- Check upload capacity: YouTube recommends checking your upload speed. Allow headroom beyond the video bitrate so ordinary network variation does not immediately push the stream over capacity.
- Run a test: Before the intended broadcast, test the actual loop, including its movement and audio if it has any. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then correct any warnings before relying on the stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube live streaming tips
What a frame-rate setting cannot solve
Frame rate controls how many frames are sent each second; it does not establish rights to the animation or its soundtrack. Make sure you have permission to use every visual and audio element in a live broadcast. A continuous loop also needs to comply with YouTube’s applicable policies. The cited encoder and upload guidance does not determine whether a particular animation or channel meets YouTube’s copyright or monetization rules.
Troubleshoot common frame-rate and stream issues
- The 60 fps option is missing: Check the encoder, selected codec, and output configuration. YouTube’s live guidance allows up to 60 fps, but that does not mean every encoder setup exposes every combination. Confirm the configuration against YouTube’s current encoder settings.
- The animation looks no smoother at 60 fps: Check whether the source contains 60 distinct frames per second. An output setting cannot add original motion detail to a 30 fps source.
- The stream reports health or upload problems: Compare your configured bitrate with YouTube’s target for the chosen resolution, codec, and frame rate. Check upload capacity, reduce the bitrate or output settings if needed, and test again.
- Motion looks wrong in the preview: Confirm the encoder’s frame rate matches the source or render rate. Re-export from the original project if the file was converted to a rate that introduces unwanted judder or duplicated frames.
- The stream does not connect: Recheck the selected YouTube event and stream key in the encoder. Use YouTube’s live streaming error-message guidance to diagnose the specific error.
Or let it run in the cloud
