A VLC playlist item change is not documented as a command to end a YouTube broadcast, but that does not guarantee every OBS, VLC, and media-file combination will switch without a playback gap or error. First determine whether OBS stopped sending, YouTube stopped receiving, or only the VLC source stopped producing media. Match the item-change time against OBS status and logs, YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped health messages, and a local recording; the title alone is not enough to identify the cause.

Separate a playback gap from a stream disconnect

A brief black screen or silence at a playlist boundary does not by itself prove that the YouTube broadcast ended. There are separate points to inspect: the VLC Video source, OBS’s encoded output, and YouTube’s ingest connection. A fault at one point can look similar to a fault at another.

  1. Record the exact time the next item switch happens.
  2. Check OBS: note whether its streaming indicator remains active, whether its stats change, and whether its log records an error at that time.
  3. Check the local recording: see whether video and audio continue through the item boundary.
  4. Check YouTube: open Live Control Room and compare its timestamped error messages and stream-health indicator with the switch time. YouTube documents that errors are timestamped and shown alongside stream health (Live streaming error messages).

Use the combination of observations to choose what to investigate next. If OBS remains active and the recording is continuous while YouTube flags an error, prioritize YouTube ingest and the outbound connection. If the local recording also breaks, focus first on the OBS source, media, or system load. These are diagnostic inferences, not guaranteed root-cause rules.

Check the VLC Video source and the files

OBS’s VLC Video source is distinct from its built-in Media Source. It uses VLC libraries and supports playlists; VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS documents the source and its media options in Media Sources and explains sources more broadly in its Sources Guide.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
  • Confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
  • Inspect the VLC Video source’s playlist, loop and shuffle options, visibility behavior, and network-caching setting.
  • Test the exact file before the failure and the next file in the playlist. A problem tied to one pair of files can help narrow the investigation.
  • Observe whether the source goes blank, restarts, or produces an audio/video gap when the item changes.

OBS’s documentation does not promise seamless transitions for every playlist, installation, or media combination. Nor does it establish that a playlist advance should end the YouTube broadcast.

Compare two controlled handoffs

Reproduce the problem with the same files and settings while keeping OBS streaming. Compare switching within one VLC Video source against moving to a prepared second scene containing the next source or playlist. Watch the OBS indicator, local recording, and YouTube health messages at each boundary. Check whether the second scene starts or restarts its media as configured and whether audio and video remain continuous.

A prepared scene handoff is a test, not a guaranteed fix. An OBS forum discussion describes a scene-based workflow, but community advice does not establish that it will resolve a particular failure (discussion begun May 2, 2023). OBS’s documentation likewise does not promise seamless playlist transitions or crossfades.

Check encoder settings only if the evidence points to ingest

Read Live Control Room’s timestamped health messages before changing encoder settings. YouTube’s general recommendations are not a special fix for VLC playlist switching; apply them when the dashboard or encoder output indicates an ingest or configuration problem. Its current encoder settings guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum interval of four seconds. For H.264, it lists 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60 as recommended bitrates. These are YouTube recommendations, not measured failure rates or proof that a playlist boundary caused a disconnect.

Follow its live-stream troubleshooting guidance. For YouTube’s encoder setup context, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Common symptoms and what to check next

What you observe What to check
VLC goes blank or silent, but OBS stays live and the local recording continues. Inspect the VLC source, the files on either side of the boundary, and source behavior. The evidence points first to playback, but does not establish a single cause.
OBS stops streaming or the local recording also breaks at the same time. Inspect OBS logs, the source, the affected media, and system load around the boundary.
OBS output and local recording appear healthy, but YouTube reports a timestamped health error. Match the dashboard time to the switch and investigate ingest and the outbound connection.
The issue happens only with one item or item pair. Repeat the test with those exact files; then compare against a known-good pair using the same setup.
The failure occurs with in-source playlist switching but not a prepared scene handoff. Compare how the source starts, restarts, and remains visible in each method. This narrows the workflow difference without proving why it matters.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is unattended uploaded-video playback rather than diagnosing this local OBS/VLC setup, StreamNeo is a separate YouTube-only option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; it loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It does not stream from a camera.
