To stream to YouTube Live with XSplit Broadcaster, set up a scene, connect a YouTube output (or enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in Custom RTMP), then start the output and check the preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room before going live. Choose settings your computer and upload connection can sustain, and test the full setup before the event.

Before you start

  • Enable live streaming on your YouTube channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live to reach the Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder-streaming guide explains the setup.
  • Create or select the event. Confirm the title, description, visibility and other details in Live Control Room. Privacy defaults vary by age: YouTube says users aged 13–17 default to private, while users 18 or older default to public; streamers can change the setting. See Manage live stream settings.
  • Prepare XSplit Broadcaster. Add the game or screen, camera, microphone and any overlays your show needs. XSplit’s interface may change, so menu labels can vary by version.

Set up your XSplit scene and YouTube output

Build the scene

In XSplit Broadcaster, create a scene and add the sources you want viewers to see and hear. Check that the intended microphone is active and that the camera, game or screen capture is framed correctly. XSplit’s getting-started workflow covers creating a scene, setting up a stream and using the Stream control; its current output instructions begin at Broadcast > Set up a new Output. See XSplit’s setup guide.

Use the guided YouTube output

  1. In XSplit, open Broadcast > Set up a new Output.
  2. Select the YouTube service if it is available, then follow the setup wizard to authorize or configure the connection.
  3. Select the configured YouTube output under Broadcast when you are ready to send video.

Depending on the output, XSplit may connect through account authorization or ask for stream credentials. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key in Live Control Room; use the credential method requested by your XSplit output.

Use Custom RTMP if needed

  1. In XSplit, go to Broadcast > Set up a new Output > Custom RTMP.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event. Paste each into its matching field in XSplit.
  3. Name the output so you can identify it in the Broadcast menu, then save it.
  4. Start the saved output from Broadcast.
  5. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview before starting a scheduled event.

A stream key works like a password for sending a feed to the right destination. Keep it private. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update XSplit; YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Live Control Room shows RTMP by default; open Stream settings to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

Choose resolution, frame rate and encoder settings

YouTube recommends letting the platform detect resolution and frame rate by default. Its published bitrate recommendations below are for the stated codec, resolution and frame rate—not a guarantee your PC or internet connection can hold that rate. The reviewed YouTube settings page does not display a publication year.

Output AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate H.264 recommended bitrate
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube Help recommendations; the page also lists other resolutions and ranges. Check YouTube’s complete encoder settings table for options not shown here.

Technical settings to check

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS when supported.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, subject to what your encoder and hardware support.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Rate control: CBR encoding.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate.

Use the same resolution and frame rate in your XSplit production that you intend to deliver. If motion looks poor, the feed stutters, or the computer struggles, reduce the output demand rather than choosing a higher setting just because it is available. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That margin is especially important if other devices or applications share the connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test, preview and go live

  1. Rehearse representative content. Run a test with movement and audio similar to the real broadcast. Check that the microphone is clear, levels are usable and overlays or captures behave as expected.
  2. Leave time for checks. YouTube recommends setting up at least 2 hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event.
  3. Start the XSplit output. Confirm the correct YouTube event is selected if you have more than one scheduled stream.
  4. Check Live Control Room. Wait for the incoming preview, then inspect stream health and audio/video before clicking Go live for a scheduled event.
  5. Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on stream health and sound and picture throughout. End the broadcast with the Live Control Room controls as appropriate, then stop the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Common problems and fixes

No preview or the stream will not connect

Make sure the intended event is selected, the stream URL and key are current and entered in the correct fields, and the XSplit output is running. Recheck credentials in Live Control Room if you are unsure which event they belong to.

RTMPS connection or SSL error

Verify that you copied the RTMPS URL rather than the ordinary RTMP URL and that your encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube says port 443 can be specified if needed.

Dropped frames or buffering

Lower the resolution or bitrate until the connection can sustain it, and account for competing network traffic while preserving upload headroom. Latency is a trade-off: lower latency can increase playback buffering. Choose a setting based on how much real-time interaction your audience needs; YouTube describes the options in its live stream settings guidance.
