Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo publish a Linux encoder to YouTube through a proxy, you need an encoder and FFmpeg/proxy combination that supports the chosen protocol path, plus a proxy that permits it. Get the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, prefer the RTMPS URL when your encoder supports it, and test the exact route before an event. There is no single proxy command that works across every FFmpeg build, proxy type, and RTMPS setup.
What you need to confirm first
- Your YouTube ingest details: the stream URL and stream key for the stream you create or select in Live Control Room. YouTube describes the key as both the stream’s password and address; keep it secret. YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Your encoder’s protocol support: check whether it supports the exact RTMP or RTMPS publishing URL YouTube provides.
- Your proxy’s transport: an HTTP proxy must support the required CONNECT tunnel for a TCP connection; SOCKS and transparent system proxies use different mechanisms. Do not assume a generic proxy setting routes every protocol.
- Your installed FFmpeg build: available protocols and proxy options vary by build and protocol path. The FFmpeg documentation describes RTMP-family protocols and HTTP proxy handling in supported cases, but does not guarantee every RTMPS/proxy combination. FFmpeg protocol documentation.
- Network authorization: use only a route permitted by your network administrator, and confirm that the proxy allows the YouTube destination and port.
Get YouTube’s publishing URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to publish.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Use those exact values; do not substitute a hostname or URL from an online example.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and says to obtain the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. Its help page advises checking that the protocol is RTMPS and trying port 443 where applicable if you encounter the SSL error it addresses. YouTube RTMPS and stream-key guidance.
Treat the key like a password. Do not put a real key in a shared script, screenshot, public issue, shell history, or log. If it is exposed, regenerate it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder using the new key.
Check FFmpeg and the proxy path
Before building a publishing command, find out what your local FFmpeg supports. Consult the local protocol help and the documentation for the installed build:
ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmp
This is an inspection step, not a guarantee that a particular proxy option applies to your RTMPS connection. FFmpeg’s documentation includes an http_proxy option in relevant protocol handling; confirm the exact syntax and applicability for your build and protocol path in FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.

Identify the proxy type and ask its administrator whether it supports the required CONNECT/TCP tunnel to the selected YouTube endpoint and port. A SOCKS proxy or system-level transparent proxy is not configured by assuming an HTTP proxy option will work. Likewise, setting an environment variable such as HTTP_PROXY does not prove that FFmpeg’s RTMPS publishing connection is being routed through it.
Use an end-to-end CONNECT tunnel where possible. A proxy that intercepts TLS can alter the security properties of RTMPS and cause certificate validation errors. Do not disable certificate checks to make a connection appear to work, and do not disclose the stream key to a proxy operator.

Build a placeholder-only FFmpeg publishing command
A typical FFmpeg publishing flow has an input, any needed encoding or stream-copy options, FLV output, and the YouTube publishing URL. The following is a structure to adapt—not a verified universal proxy command. Replace placeholders with values from Live Control Room, and add only proxy options documented for your installed FFmpeg build and the protocol path in use.
ffmpeg -i INPUT [ENCODING_OR_STREAM_COPY_OPTIONS] -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
Do not paste your real key into a command you expect to share or preserve in shell history. Where possible, use a method appropriate to your system for supplying secrets without exposing them in process listings, shell history, or logs. Confirm how your chosen encoder handles credentials before relying on it.

If your tool cannot publish through the proxy with RTMPS, do not assume that changing to RTMP, setting a generic proxy variable, or changing bitrate will solve the route. First establish which protocols and proxy mechanisms the installed encoder actually supports, then test a permitted route.
Set video and audio for YouTube
Proxy settings determine the network path; encoder settings determine the media sent over it. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table for the combination you select rather than treating one bitrate as universal. - Choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder and stable upload capacity can sustain.
- Set constant bitrate and the recommended keyframe interval; use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for your codec and format.
- Use an audio format supported by the YouTube encoder guidance and your encoder.
- Do not troubleshoot a failed proxy tunnel by repeatedly changing media settings: first separate protocol, proxy, DNS, port, authentication, and TLS issues.
Test the route before going live
- Start a private or unlisted test stream, using the same encoder, proxy, protocol, and network route planned for the actual event.
- Check that FFmpeg or your encoder connects to the expected YouTube ingest URL and that YouTube’s Live Control Room preview receives video and audio.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test under conditions representative of the actual stream, and confirm the available upload capacity before raising resolution or bitrate. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Only after the route is working should you tune the media settings to address quality or capacity warnings.
Troubleshoot in network-first order
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Whether the stream is enabled and the URL/key pair is copied from the intended Live Control Room stream. | Copy the current details again. If the key may have been exposed, regenerate it and update the encoder. YouTube stream settings. |
| SSL or TLS error | Whether the encoder uses the exact RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, and whether the proxy intercepts TLS or prevents certificate validation. | Verify the protocol/server and try port 443 where applicable, as YouTube advises for its documented SSL-error case. Do not disable certificate validation. YouTube RTMPS guidance. |
| Direct publishing works but proxy publishing does not | Whether the proxy supports CONNECT to the selected endpoint and port, requires authentication, or has DNS or destination restrictions. | Compare direct and proxy connectivity separately; confirm the proxy’s allowed destination, authentication behavior, and DNS resolution with its administrator. |
| FFmpeg rejects the proxy option or ignores it | Whether the installed build exposes the relevant protocol and whether the documented option applies to the RTMPS protocol path. | Check ffmpeg -h protocol=rtmp and the documentation for that build. Do not assume a generic environment variable routes publishing traffic. FFmpeg protocol documentation. |
| The connection starts, but YouTube reports poor stream health | YouTube’s preview and health messages, encoder bitrate and format, and stable upload capacity. | Follow the current YouTube recommendations for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate; change media settings only after the route is confirmed. YouTube encoder guidance. |
When HLS is relevant
YouTube documents HLS ingestion for HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS has its own URL and stream-key protocol selection; it is not an automatic fallback when an RTMPS proxy tunnel fails. Use it only if your encoder and YouTube stream are configured for that ingestion mode. YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream rather than publish a live camera or encoder feed through your Linux proxy, StreamNeo is a different route: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
