If an encoder cannot publish to YouTube from an Indian office network, first check that it is using the exact RTMPS server URL and matching stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and ask IT to verify outbound TCP port 443 to that hostname. YouTube recommends RTMPS and specifically advises trying port 443 for certain SSL errors. A timeout alone does not prove the firewall is responsible: a wrong URL or an encoder without RTMPS support can cause similar trouble.
Which port should IT check?
Start with outbound TCP 443 to the exact RTMPS ingest hostname YouTube provides for your stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and says that if an SSL error occurs, you can explicitly specify port 443 in the URL or encoder configuration. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions and its encoder settings guidance.
Use the destination shown in Live Control Room, not a hostname copied from an example or a guessed allowlist. YouTube’s published guidance does not provide a complete, stable list of ingest hostnames to permit. The URL and key for the stream are supplied in Live Control Room’s encoder setup.

Check the encoder before blaming the firewall
- Copy the correct connection details. In YouTube Live Control Room, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and the corresponding stream key. Paste both into the encoder’s server and key fields. Make sure you have selected RTMPS rather than ordinary RTMP.
- Confirm RTMPS support. Check the encoder’s protocol options or documentation. An encoder that does not support RTMPS cannot publish using that protocol; YouTube identifies lack of RTMPS support as a possible cause of connection timeouts.
- Try port 443 for an SSL error. If the encoder has a port field, set it to 443 as YouTube advises. If the port is included in the server URL, use the encoder’s documented format and avoid adding conflicting port settings.
- Ask IT to observe a controlled attempt. Have the network administrator review firewall and proxy logs while you initiate a connection from the encoder host. Ask whether outbound TCP 443 to the actual RTMPS hostname is allowed, reset, or intercepted, and whether proxy rules or TLS inspection affect it. This log check applies YouTube’s protocol, URL, and port guidance; YouTube does not prescribe a specific diagnostic command.
What the Indian-office context does—and does not—tell you
YouTube’s cited help pages offer general guidance, not a separate port requirement for Indian offices. They do not establish that Indian offices as a group block a particular port or need a special national setting. The relevant variables are your organization’s egress policy, proxy configuration, and any TLS inspection; ask your network administrator to check the specific office network.

If the connection works but the stream is unstable
A permitted connection can still struggle if the available upload capacity is insufficient or shared. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and says to account for both primary and backup streams when sizing capacity. That is guidance for the network budget, not a requirement that every stream use a backup. Check YouTube’s streaming tips, and consider other office traffic that may compete with the encoder.
When to consider HLS over HTTPS
If RTMPS cannot be used and your encoder supports HLS, YouTube documents HLS ingestion using an HTTPS URL. Check the encoder’s HLS support and ask IT whether the organization’s HTTPS egress policy permits the actual connection. HLS is another supported ingest workflow, not a guarantee that an office firewall or proxy will allow it. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.

Troubleshooting by symptom
