Playwright Test: screenshot assertions in an existing suite
Playwright’s visual comparison documentation describes toHaveScreenshot(), including options such as maxDiffPixels and a stylesheet that can hide dynamic elements. Screenshot snapshots live beside tests in a separate directory and should be committed to version control for review.
Playwright warns that screenshots can vary by browser and platform because rendering and fonts differ; separate snapshots may be needed. This is a test capability, not a separate scheduled-monitoring service. It is a practical fit when the team already uses Playwright Test and wants changes reviewed through its existing tests and code-review process.
Lost Pixel: check the project status first

A repository’s continued availability does not establish that the product remains a supported choice for new deployments.

Argos: a managed comparison service, not supported self-hosting
Argos’s documentation describes CI capture, uploads, baseline comparison, pull-request review, and integrations such as Playwright, Storybook, Cypress, and Vitest. It says the platform is operated as a managed cloud service and self-hosting is not officially supported or documented. Its documented production setup depends on PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Redis, S3, DynamoDB, and integrations including a GitHub App and Stripe. Open-source availability is not the same as a supported self-hosted deployment.
Choose by workflow, not by the word “monitoring”

- Choose Playwright Test if your team already maintains Playwright tests and wants screenshot comparisons alongside those tests rather than a separate review service.

Before deciding, compare the options on whether review happens in a standalone interface or in Git, whether captures come from configured URLs or existing tests, how baseline approval and history work, what controls exist for rendering noise, which browsers and viewports you need, where data is stored, how much service operation the team can take on, and whether scheduled live-page capture is actually documented.

- Choose representative pages or components. Begin with a small set where visual changes matter; expand after the team can interpret the resulting diffs.
- Fix the rendering conditions. Keep browser, operating system, fonts, viewport, and test data consistent. These can all affect rendered screenshots.
- Control dynamic content. Use deterministic fixtures where possible. Hide or ignore volatile regions when appropriate, such as content that changes independently of the code under test. This reduces noise but does not eliminate false positives.
- Capture and compare. Save an accepted reference, capture the current page, and compare the images using the tool’s configured comparison method.
- Review before approving. Inspect the visual difference, decide whether it is intended, and update the baseline only when the new appearance is expected.
- Run it in the right workflow. CI visual regression fits naturally with code changes. For recurring checks of a live site, separately confirm that the selected system supports scheduling and alerting.
A screenshot diff is evidence of a visual difference, not proof that a feature works, that a site is accessible, that it is available, or that a change is desirable. Keep functional tests, accessibility checks, and uptime monitoring in their appropriate roles.
