Capture a WebKit screenshot with Playwright
Install Playwright in your project and install its WebKit browser. Then run this JavaScript example:

})();The file is written to the current working directory. Playwright runs browsers headless by default; set headless: false in webkit.launch() if you need to see the browser window. See the Playwright Library guide for the library workflow.
Install the package and browser
For an existing Node.js project, install the Playwright package and its WebKit browser using the project’s package manager. The exact browser-install command and package setup depend on your project and installed Playwright version; consult the current Playwright Library guide rather than assuming a command from a different release.

Choose when navigation is ready
page.goto() navigates to the URL before the screenshot call. If the page needs a particular element or state to appear, wait for that condition before capturing; otherwise the screenshot may reflect a page that has not reached the state you intended.
Choose the screenshot region and file format
page.screenshot() captures the visible viewport unless you specify otherwise. The Page API documents screenshot options for changing the capture area and output.

For example, capture a full page as WebP with device-pixel scale:

Use screenshot assertions for visual regression tests
A saved image and a visual regression assertion serve different purposes. For a one-off file, use page.screenshot(). In Playwright Test, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() to compare a screenshot against an expected baseline. The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing with the saved expectation; see the visual comparison guide and PageAssertions API.
Keep the comparison environment consistent. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A baseline produced under different conditions may therefore differ even if your page code has not changed.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- No screenshot file appears: Check the path and the process’s current working directory, and ensure the code reaches the screenshot call. Keep browser cleanup in a
finallyblock so an error does not leave the browser open. - The image shows only part of the page: The default is the viewport. Set
fullPage: trueif you need the full scrollable page. - The capture is the wrong size or format: Verify the filename extension and screenshot options. The format is inferred from the extension;
scaleaffects CSS-pixel versus device-pixel output. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Make sure navigation has completed and wait for the relevant page state or element before taking the screenshot.
- Visual tests fail inconsistently: Compare under a consistent operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. The visual comparison guide explains baseline behavior and environment variation.

Does Playwright screenshot comparison use the same call as saving an image?
No. Save a standalone image with page.screenshot(); use Playwright Test’s expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() for a visual comparison against a baseline.
