To loop children’s stories as a vertical YouTube livestream, arrange portrait-oriented prerecorded videos in OBS Studio, set a single Media Source to Loop or a VLC Video source to Loop Playlist, then send the scene to YouTube through Live Control Room using the encoder workflow. A loop only repeats the media; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. You must also plan for stream interruptions, label child-directed material accurately, and clear the rights to everything you broadcast.
Choose a portrait format that suits the story
YouTube’s current Live Control Room guidance describes horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 output. Vertical live streams are designed for portrait viewing, but a vertical layout created by center-cropping a horizontal picture can cut off characters, captions, or illustrations. Make a portrait-native scene where possible, and inspect the preview rather than assuming a crop will preserve the important parts of each frame.
Portrait-only or dual output
Use a portrait-only composition when the story artwork is designed for a tall frame and the main audience experience is mobile. YouTube also describes a dual-stream workflow that can provide horizontal and vertical versions, with a shared URL and chat. Its vertical output may be a center crop of the horizontal picture, though other vertical layout options are available. Review the current Live Control Room choices before launch: the vertical layout setting cannot be added after a stream has started.

Prepare the videos and rights before building the loop
Use media you are allowed to broadcast
Gather the video files, artwork, narration, and music, and confirm that your permission covers livestreaming on YouTube, the territories where you expect viewers, and any archived replay you plan to keep. A purchase of a physical picture book does not grant permission to broadcast its text or illustrations. Rights may apply separately to story text, images, animation, a recording, a narrator’s performance, and music.
YouTube’s livestream terms state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” YouTube’s copyright guidance says livestreams are scanned for third-party content. A match can cause the stream to be replaced by a placeholder, receive a warning, be interrupted, or be terminated. Even when you have a license, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. When permission is unclear, use original or expressly licensed material and get jurisdiction-specific advice rather than assuming that owning a book or file is enough.
Check the audience designation
If the stories are made for children, set the audience accordingly in YouTube Studio. YouTube lists stories, songs, characters, activities, and other child-targeted subject matter as signals to consider. The platform says, “We trust you to set your audience accurately, and we’ll only override your audience setting choice in cases of error or abuse.” Do not rely on automated systems to make the decision for you.

For an individual livestream marked made for kids, YouTube lists restrictions including no live chat, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, channel memberships, or Super Chat. Marking a stream made for kids also does not automatically put it in the YouTube Kids app.
Build and test the repeating scene in OBS
- Make a portrait canvas. In OBS, set the video canvas and output to the portrait dimensions you intend to stream, then arrange the scene for a 9:16 frame. Check the preview for cropped text, faces, and illustrations. If you plan to use YouTube’s dual-stream output, inspect its vertical layout separately because the center crop may not match a portrait-native scene.
- Add one story file. In the scene’s Sources, add a Media Source, select the video, and enable Loop. Play the source through the end and confirm that it restarts cleanly with the intended audio.
- Or add a playlist. Add a VLC Video source, select the story files in the order you want, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. VLC must be installed for this source. Test the transition from the last item back to the first, and check that audio does not disappear or overlap unexpectedly at file boundaries.
- Set the encoder output. In OBS, select the stream resolution, frame rate, encoder, video bitrate, audio settings, and keyframe interval appropriate to your connection and YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. Check Live Control Room for the current recommended values for the chosen output rather than relying on an old preset: the right bitrate depends on the stream’s resolution and frame rate, and the available encoder choices depend on the computer. Keep the portrait aspect ratio consistent from the OBS canvas through the output.
- Connect to YouTube. Make sure the channel is eligible for livestreaming, open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, choose the encoder workflow, and connect OBS using the stream key and server details shown there. Treat the stream key as private; do not show it in a recording or share it publicly. Select the intended horizontal, vertical, or dual-stream layout before starting.
- Preview before going live. Check the Live Control Room preview for portrait framing, readable text, picture quality, and audible narration or music. Confirm that the stream is actually playing and that the chosen audience setting is correct before you start the broadcast.
Exact encoder numbers are not one-size-fits-all: use YouTube’s current recommendations in Live Control Room for the chosen resolution and frame rate. If OBS reports dropped frames or the preview stutters, lower the output demands or improve the connection, then retest before relying on the loop for a long session.

Check eligibility and children’s-stream limits
YouTube’s current guidance says livestreaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and that a creator must be at least 16 years old. Confirm your channel status and the current eligibility rules before spending time on a continuous setup; these are YouTube requirements, not a guarantee that an individual stream will remain live.
A made-for-kids designation changes the viewing and monetization features available on that stream. In particular, do not plan on live chat as a way to interact with viewers during a stream marked made for kids. YouTube’s vertical discovery experience is also not universal: its viewer guidance describes the vertical live feed in the YouTube app, not currently on tablets, and says scheduled livestreams and Premieres do not appear in that feed. Its general live-streaming guidance also says viewers may find vertical live streams while browsing Shorts on mobile.

Keep a DIY 24/7 stream recoverable
OBS looping solves one problem: replaying the selected media. It does not keep a computer powered, restore an internet connection, guarantee that OBS stays open, or guarantee that YouTube’s session will continue. Treat 24/7 as an operating goal and check the actual broadcast after startup and during operation.
- Confirm the loop: verify that the final video returns to the first item and that audio remains present at the transition.
- Watch the live preview: confirm that the YouTube feed is still playing, not merely that OBS shows a scene.
- Plan for interruption: decide who will notice if OBS, the media source, the computer, the network, or the YouTube session stops and how they will restart it.
- Keep recovery access: ensure the person monitoring the stream can reach the computer and Live Control Room without exposing the stream key.
Troubleshoot common failures
The stream is horizontal, cropped, or missing part of the artwork
Check the OBS canvas and output dimensions, then inspect the scene in the Live Control Room preview. If you are using dual output, review the vertical layout selected in YouTube: a center crop can remove important content. Recompose the scene for portrait instead of stretching a landscape frame, and select the intended layout before starting because it cannot be added after the stream begins.
The video stops instead of repeating
For one file, confirm that the Media Source’s Loop option is enabled. For multiple files, confirm that the VLC Video source has Loop Playlist enabled and that VLC is installed. Play through the last item and verify the return to the first item before going live.

The picture stutters or OBS drops frames
Compare the OBS output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate. Reduce the stream’s output demands if the computer or connection cannot sustain them, then run another preview test. Do not assume that a file playing smoothly on the computer will necessarily encode and upload smoothly.
The live feed has no audio or an awkward gap between stories
Check the media source’s audio in OBS and listen to the transition between files. Confirm that each file has the intended audio track and that playback returns to the first item cleanly. The Live Control Room preview is the final check that the audio reaches YouTube.
YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream
Check Live Control Room for a warning or copyright match and review the rights for every story element, including music and illustrations. You may need permission that covers livestreaming and, where applicable, a Content ID allowlist from the rights owner. If the stream key or encoder session has stopped working, reconnect using the current details in Live Control Room and verify the preview again.

If the stream is marked made for kids, live chat is unavailable for that individual stream. For vertical discovery, check the YouTube app experience: the vertical live feed is not currently described as available on tablets, and scheduled streams and Premieres are excluded from that feed.
