You don’t have to tap each letter on Android: you can swipe across an on-screen keyboard, dictate into a text field, use spoken commands to control the phone, enter braille, or connect a physical keyboard. The right option depends on whether you want to change how you type, avoid touch, or control more than text entry. Feature names and availability vary by device, Android version, market, and language.

Start by deciding what you want to change

Your goal Option to try Input and scope
Change the keyboard’s feel or reduce tapping Gboard settings or Glide typing On-screen touch; text entry
Speak words into a message or other text field Gboard voice typing Speech; text entry
Open apps and navigate without touch Voice Access Speech; whole-device control
Enter text using braille TalkBack braille keyboard or a braille display On-screen braille or braille hardware
Type with tactile keys USB or Bluetooth physical keyboard External hardware; text entry and, on supported setups, accessibility controls
Use an alternative control method Switch Access or Camera Switches Switch-based input; availability varies

These are alternatives, not a universal ranking: setup, language support, Android version, and device compatibility matter. Google’s Android accessibility overview describes several of these options and notes that features and names can vary.

Change the on-screen keyboard you already have

If you mainly want different behavior or appearance, start with your current keyboard rather than installing another one. Gboard may already be installed and selected on some Android devices. To find its settings, open an app with a text field, bring up the keyboard, open its features menu, then tap Settings. The exact menu and system Settings route can differ between phones.

Gboard settings include features such as Glide typing, text correction, and voice typing. You can also change its theme, sound, and vibration preferences. Device-level vibration settings can override Gboard’s vibration setting; see Google’s Gboard setup guide and theme, sound, and vibration instructions.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Customizing Gboard is different from switching to a different input method. If your keyboard’s menus don’t match these instructions, search your phone’s Settings for “keyboard” or check the device maker’s help information.

Swipe across letters instead of tapping them

Gboard’s Glide typing lets you trace a word by sliding your finger from letter to letter, then lifting it. It’s an on-screen touch option for people who want to enter words without tapping every key individually; it does not require an external keyboard.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Open a text field and bring up Gboard.
  2. Touch the first letter of a word and slide your finger across its letters without lifting.
  3. Lift your finger when the word is complete, then continue with the next word.

Google notes that Glide typing is unavailable in some languages and that instructions can depend on Android version or a customized device. Check Google’s Glide typing guidance if the feature is missing or behaves differently. The documentation describes how to use it, not a measured speed advantage.

Dictate words into a text field

Gboard voice typing converts speech into text in many places where you can type with a keyboard. Open the keyboard and tap its microphone icon, then speak. For punctuation, Google documents commands such as “period,” “comma,” “question mark,” “new line,” and “new paragraph.” Supported punctuation and languages vary, and talk-to-text does not work with every language.

Dictation is for putting spoken words into a text field. It is not the same as Voice Access, which can also open apps and navigate the device.

Use Voice Access to control the phone by voice

Voice Access is the option to consider when you want spoken commands to do more than enter text—for example, opening apps, navigating, or editing text hands-free. Google’s current getting-started page lists English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Japanese. That is a documented language list, not a guarantee that every command or feature works identically on every device.

  1. Open Android’s Accessibility settings and look for Voice Access and its shortcut. Menu names and setup steps vary by Android version.
  2. Follow the on-screen setup prompts to enable Voice Access and its shortcut.
  3. For an alternative activation method, configure a physical key or switch where supported. Google’s guide describes pairing a Bluetooth keyboard or switch through Android’s Bluetooth settings.

Voice Access controls and setup can differ across versions, so follow the instructions for the version installed on your device rather than relying on a universal button sequence. See Google’s Voice Access getting-started guide.

Enter text with braille

Use the TalkBack braille keyboard

TalkBack includes an on-screen braille keyboard for six-dot braille input. Google documents options for changing languages, switching between grade 1 and grade 2, adjusting dot positions, and using gestures. How the keyboard works can depend on screen orientation and device capabilities. Follow the current TalkBack prompts and consult Google’s TalkBack braille keyboard instructions for setup.

Connect a braille display

Android also documents text input with braille displays. Google says BrailleBack is not required to connect a braille display, and notes that you may need to select the TalkBack braille keyboard as the on-screen keyboard. Keystrokes can vary between displays, so follow the prompts on your phone and the documentation for your display. See Google’s braille-display instructions.

Connect a physical keyboard

Android supports typing with USB or Bluetooth keyboards. A physical keyboard can suit someone who prefers tactile keys, uses a tablet, or needs a hardware input option. If you are looking for one, “Bluetooth keyboard for Android” is a useful category to search; compatibility depends on the keyboard and device, and no particular model is established here.

Google documents additional physical-keyboard accessibility settings on Android 16 and up. Bounce Keys can ignore rapid repeated presses, and Mouse Keys can control the pointer with keyboard keys. Google says these settings appear when a physical keyboard is attached; don’t assume they are available on older Android versions or every device. See Google’s physical keyboard accessibility instructions.

Look for other accessibility input methods

Switch Access and Camera Switches are other input methods listed in Google’s Android accessibility overview. They may be relevant if touch, speech, or a conventional keyboard isn’t the right fit. Because availability and names vary by market and device, check the Accessibility section of your phone’s Settings or consult its maker rather than expecting one universal menu path. Google’s accessibility overview is a starting point.
