It depends on what you mean by “rerun.” On an ended livestream’s archive, YouTube may replay the original chat alongside the video, but viewers cannot send new messages to that ended event. A Premiere has an active chat while it plays for viewers together, then may show a replay of that chat afterward. A new live broadcast is live chat, not an archive replay.
First, identify what kind of “rerun” you’re watching

YouTube’s guidance does not define “rerun” as a distinct feature or mode. If a creator is broadcasting prerecorded gameplay as a new live event, that is different from watching the old stream archive; the general archive and Premiere rules do not establish a universal behavior for every rebroadcast setup.
Can you chat during a YouTube livestream replay?
No—not in the ended stream’s original Live Chat. When chat replay is available, it shows the messages from the original broadcast as they appeared live. You can watch that conversation, but you cannot add a new message to the old event. YouTube distinguishes Live Chat from comments, which may appear below the video after the stream ends. During a live stream or Premiere, YouTube says a viewer can send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, with each message limited to 200 characters. Those limits describe active chat, not posting to an archived replay. YouTube Help: Live chat.

Why is chat missing from a gaming stream replay?
- The creator turned off chat replay. YouTube says creators can disable Live chat replay for an archived stream in the video’s customization settings. YouTube Help: Live chat.
- The stream was edited in YouTube’s video editor. YouTube says chat replay will not be present on streams edited there. YouTube Help: Live chat.
- The video is set as Made for Kids. YouTube lists Live Chat and Live chat replay among the features disabled for content with that audience setting. YouTube Help: Set your channel or video’s audience.
- No usable archive exists. YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If there is no archive, there is no archived chat replay to display. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
These are documented reasons a replay may be absent; they do not guarantee that every missing-chat case has one particular cause.
How a Premiere differs from an archive
A Premiere lets viewers watch a video together at a scheduled time. Its Live Chat is active during the event, and YouTube says chat replay is available after the Premiere ends. That replay preserves the event’s conversation; it does not reopen the chat for new messages. YouTube Help: Create a Premiere.

How creators can hand viewers to another event
Live Redirect is an end-of-stream handoff: an eligible creator can direct viewers from an ended live stream to a Premiere or another live stream. It moves viewers to a different event; it does not replay the original stream or make its chat active again. Redirecting viewers to another channel requires that channel’s permission, and YouTube applies eligibility requirements. YouTube Help: Use Live Redirect.

What this means when you watch gaming content
- If the event is live now, use its Live Chat to participate, subject to the channel’s settings and YouTube’s restrictions.
- If you are watching an ended stream, treat any chat beside the video as a timestamped replay, not a live conversation.
- If chat is absent, comments below the video are separate; they are not a copy of the original Live Chat.
- If the creator scheduled a Premiere, chat during the event and chat replay afterward are expected to work differently from an ordinary archive.
