To send a Winamp playlist to YouTube Live, play it in Winamp, capture Winamp’s audio in OBS, then stream OBS to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. On supported Windows versions, OBS can capture Winamp directly; capturing the audio output device is a fallback. Check the YouTube preview and listen for clean audio before going live.

Before you start

  • YouTube live access: Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Windows and OBS: OBS per-application audio capture is available in OBS Studio 28 and later on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, according to the OBS Application Audio Capture Guide.
  • Playlist and rights: Winamp can play playlists containing tracks, internet radio stations, and other media resources. Make sure you have the necessary rights for anything you broadcast; YouTube scans live streams for third-party content.

Set up the Winamp playlist

  1. In Winamp, load an existing playlist or create one in the Playlist Editor or Media Library. The playlist determines what plays and in what order.
  2. Start playback and confirm you can hear it through the Windows audio output device you intend to use. Winamp’s documented help identifies DirectSound Output as its recommended normal playback output for the versions covered, but controls may differ across builds; see Winamp’s output help.

Capture Winamp audio in OBS

Choose one audio route. Application capture is more selective because it isolates Winamp; output-device capture picks up sound sent through the chosen device. OBS notes that some applications or audio paths may not work with application capture.

Method What it captures Support and trade-off
Application Audio Capture Winamp’s audio specifically Available in OBS Studio 28 or later on Windows 10 version 2004+ and Windows 11. Some audio paths may be incompatible.
Audio Output Capture Audio from the selected output device A fallback if application capture is unavailable or fails; may include other audio played through that device.

Option 1: Capture Winamp directly

  1. In OBS, open the scene you will use and click + under Sources.
  2. Add Application Audio Capture, then select Winamp in the source’s application list.
  3. Play a track and check that the source’s meter moves in the OBS Audio Mixer. If it does not, confirm Winamp is playing and try the output-device method below.
  4. To avoid doubling the sound, disable global Desktop Audio in Settings → Audio when using application capture, as advised in the OBS application-audio guide.

Option 2: Capture the audio output device

  1. In OBS, click + under Sources and add Audio Output Capture.
  2. Select the Windows output device that Winamp uses, then play a track and confirm the meter moves.
  3. If you capture an output device as a scene source, avoid also selecting that same device as a global audio source in Settings → Audio. OBS warns duplicate capture can cause echo; its audio sources guide explains the device-capture options.

Build the scene and connect YouTube

  1. Choose a visual: In OBS, add an image, text, media source, or other suitable visual if you do not want viewers to see a blank scene. The audio workflow does not require a visualizer.
  2. Get the YouTube stream details: In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server/stream URL and stream key shown there. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Studio flow.
  3. Enter the details in OBS: Open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the URL and key from the Live Control Room. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials. If one is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and replace it in OBS. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
  4. Preview before going live: Start streaming in OBS and wait for the feed to appear in the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check the audio, visual, and playback before selecting Go live for a scheduled stream. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder ahead of time and monitoring stream quality.

Use the encoder settings YouTube supplies in the Live Control Room. This basic workflow does not require advanced ingestion protocols or a separately specified bitrate.

Copyright and YouTube rules for music

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material continues, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. Having a licence does not necessarily prevent interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Public, unlisted, or private visibility does not grant music rights. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and obtain the necessary permissions before broadcasting.

Stop the broadcast

When you are finished, stop the encoder in OBS and end the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the current guidance if archiving matters to your workflow.

Troubleshooting

OBS shows no audio

  • Confirm Winamp is playing and producing sound on the expected Windows device.
  • For application capture, check that Winamp is selected. For device capture, choose the output device Winamp actually uses.
  • If application capture does not work with Winamp’s audio path, try Audio Output Capture instead.

The music echoes or sounds doubled

Use just one route for the same audio. Do not capture Winamp through Application Audio Capture and Desktop Audio simultaneously, or capture an output device both as a scene source and as a global device in OBS settings.
