Neither ScreenshotOne nor Selenium supplies the recurring schedule by itself. You need a separate scheduler to start each capture. ScreenshotOne is a managed capture API that reduces browser operations; Selenium is a browser automation framework that gives you more control over interactions and the browser environment, at the cost of operating that environment. Choose based on your capture workflow, then design scheduling, retries, storage, and overlap handling as separate parts.
What each option does
ScreenshotOne: a managed capture API
ScreenshotOne accepts a URL, HTML, or Markdown and returns configured captures in image or PDF formats, with HTML and Markdown response modes also documented. Its options include viewport and device emulation, full-page or element capture, selectors, custom scripts and styles, wait conditions, and timeouts. The official API documentation describes capture capabilities; it does not establish a built-in recurring scheduler.
Requests require an access key. The getting-started documentation supports GET and POST, with the key sent as a parameter, JSON field, or X-Access-Key header. Use HTTPS: ScreenshotOne warns that HTTP does not encrypt keys, authorization headers, cookies, or other sensitive data in transit. Selenium: browser automation you operate
Selenium WebDriver controls a browser through language bindings and browser-specific implementations. Its screenshot support can capture the current browsing context or a selected element, and the examples save the returned data to a file. Setup involves a language binding, browser, and driver; Selenium Manager can help manage drivers. Start with the Selenium documentation and WebDriver guide.

Selenium Grid routes WebDriver scripts to remote browser instances. It supports distributed execution across configured machines, browser types, browser versions, and operating systems. That is useful for cross-browser coverage, but means you must deploy and secure the Grid. Selenium warns that Grid should be protected with appropriate firewall permissions: exposure can let third parties access internal applications or run binaries. See Selenium Grid documentation.
What “scheduled” requires
For either approach, a separate scheduler starts the capture program or API request at the desired interval. Treat the schedule as orchestration, not a capture feature. The scheduler or surrounding job should also define what happens when a run is missed, how retries work, where files go, and whether a new run may overlap an unfinished one. The reviewed official documentation for both products does not establish a native recurring scheduler.
- ScreenshotOne: Your job calls the API, receives or retrieves the render, and stores it. Asynchronous requests and webhooks change how a capture completes and how its result is delivered; they do not create the recurring trigger.
- Selenium: Your job launches or connects to a browser, runs the WebDriver script, and saves or transfers the screenshot. With Grid, the script is routed to available configured nodes; capacity depends on your deployment.

ScreenshotOne’s device setting is emulation, not a physical device. Its bulk endpoint accepts multiple URLs, but the documentation describes it as a wrapper around regular capture endpoints, notes that a custom bulk solution may be preferable, and says bulk requests share the one-minute request bucket with ordinary requests. Processing is lazy unless execute=true is selected, so submitting a bulk request alone does not mean every capture has rendered. See the bulk endpoint documentation.

Plan for capture timing and load
ScreenshotOne documents a 60-second default request timeout and a 90-second maximum. Navigation timeout defaults to 30 seconds and has a 30-second maximum. The delay option is normally limited to 30 seconds; longer delays require a timeout greater than 300 seconds and are available only for asynchronous requests. These are vendor-documented limits, not promises that a particular site will finish loading in time. Check the current options documentation when configuring jobs.
For Selenium, capture time depends on your browser startup, navigation and wait strategy, target page, and available local or Grid capacity. The cited Selenium documentation does not provide a common-workload performance figure for comparison with ScreenshotOne. Pilot your own pages and schedule before choosing intervals or concurrency; do not treat a vendor feature list as a speed or reliability benchmark.
Security, reliability, and cost decisions
Protect credentials and browser infrastructure
- Keep ScreenshotOne access keys out of source control and use HTTPS for API requests. Avoid putting sensitive values in URLs where logs may expose them.
- Keep a Selenium Grid private and firewall-protected. A remote browser endpoint is operational infrastructure, not a public service to expose casually.
- For either design, define where captures and logs are stored and who can access them, especially if pages contain private or authenticated content.
Compare actual costs and failure behavior
The official material reviewed here does not establish a directly comparable price, response speed, or reliability figure for ScreenshotOne and Selenium under the same workload. Selenium may avoid a per-capture API charge but requires you to supply and operate execution capacity; ScreenshotOne shifts rendering operations to a hosted API. Compare the total cost of your own workload, including infrastructure and maintenance, rather than inferring a winner from feature pages. ScreenshotOne’s homepage has advertised 100 free screenshots per month, a 99.957% uptime figure over the preceding 30 days, and more than 6.8 million screenshots rendered as of October 3, 2026; these are vendor claims, not independent comparative evidence. Implement the scheduled capture
With ScreenshotOne
- Create a job in the scheduler you already operate and store the ScreenshotOne access key as a secret in that job’s environment.
- At each run, call the capture endpoint over HTTPS with the target URL and desired capture parameters. Save the returned bytes to a durable destination.
- Record the run identifier, target, completion state, and output location. Decide how your job handles timeouts, retries, and overlapping runs.
For long-running work, ScreenshotOne supports asynchronous requests and a webhook URL for the result. Your scheduler still initiates each capture, and your application must handle the result and any retry policy. For larger batches, account for the endpoint’s lazy processing and shared request bucket.
With Selenium
- Install the Selenium language binding and configure the browser and driver; Selenium Manager may help manage drivers.
- Write a WebDriver script to open the target page, perform any required interactions, wait for the page state you need, and save a screenshot.
- Schedule that script in your job runner. If using Grid, route the WebDriver session to your Grid and secure its network access.
- Have the job store the screenshot and report failures so the next run does not silently overwrite or conceal a missed capture.
Selenium’s WebDriver documentation describes browser control; its screenshot documentation shows screenshot support. Use the binding and browser combination you deploy, and verify its current API details against the official docs rather than assuming examples are identical across languages.

Common problems and fixes
The capture runs only once
Neither API calls nor WebDriver scripts create recurring schedules. Confirm that your external scheduler is enabled, has the intended interval and timezone, and is invoking the job after deployment.
The API request exposes a key or fails authorization
Use HTTPS and verify that the access key is present in the supported parameter, POST JSON field, or X-Access-Key header. Keep credentials in job secrets rather than committed code.
A bulk request returns before all captures exist
ScreenshotOne bulk processing is lazy by default. Select execute=true when immediate execution is appropriate, or implement the documented follow-up handling; also account for the shared one-minute request bucket.

A page is incomplete or times out
For ScreenshotOne, tune documented wait conditions and timeouts while respecting the vendor’s current limits. For Selenium, wait for the specific page state or element your capture needs instead of assuming navigation alone means all content is ready. A longer wait can increase job duration and does not guarantee a slow or blocked target will load.
A Grid session is unavailable or unsafe
Check that Grid nodes are online and have capacity for the requested browser configuration. Restrict network access with firewall rules and do not expose the Grid endpoint publicly.
