Use page.evaluateHandle() to keep a reference to a JavaScript value in the page, then inspect it with handle.evaluate(), getProperty(), or getProperties(). Use jsonValue() when you need serializable data, or remoteObject() when you need Chrome DevTools Protocol metadata. Dispose handles when you are finished.
Inspect a page-side object with a JSHandle
A Puppeteer JSHandle is a reference to an object in the page’s JavaScript context, not a plain object copied into Node.js. Create one with page.evaluateHandle() when you want to keep working with the page-side value; page.evaluate() is for evaluating code and returning its result instead.
const handle = await page.evaluateHandle(() => window.someAppState);
// Run a focused read in the page context.
const status = await handle.evaluate(value => value.status);
console.log(status);
// Get a property as its own handle, then retrieve a serializable value.
const userHandle = await handle.getProperty('user');
const user = await userHandle.jsonValue();
console.log(user);
// Inspect the underlying CDP representation.
const remote = handle.remoteObject();
console.log(remote);
// Release both references when finished.
await userHandle.dispose();
await handle.dispose();
This is an illustrative pattern based on the documented APIs, not a claim that it was run in a browser. The Puppeteer JSHandle API reference documents these inspection methods. Its page showed version 25.12.0 when accessed; match the documentation to your installed release if a method signature differs.
Choose the inspection method that fits
| Need | Method | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a page-side value available for more inspection | page.evaluateHandle() |
A JSHandle wrapping the in-page value. |
| Read a field or calculate a summary | handle.evaluate(fn) |
The function’s result, with the referenced value passed as its first argument. |
| Access one property separately | handle.getProperty(name) |
A handle for that property. |
| Enumerate properties | handle.getProperties() |
A map from property names to handles. |
| Get a by-value representation | handle.jsonValue() |
The serializable portions of the value; it does not call toJSON(). |
| Inspect CDP metadata for the value | handle.remoteObject() |
The protocol Runtime.RemoteObject representation. |
| Release a handle’s reference | handle.dispose() |
Releases the referenced object so it can be garbage-collected. |
Read a focused value without copying the whole object
Use handle.evaluate(fn) when you know which field or derived value matters. This keeps the work on the page side and returns only the function’s result to Node.js. For a large or complex object, selecting the required fields is often more useful than trying to convert everything.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Get one or many property handles
getProperty(name) creates a separately managed handle for one property. getProperties() returns a map of property names to handles. These are still references to page-side values, so dispose of the handles you create when you no longer need them.
Use JSON only for serializable data
jsonValue() returns the serializable portions of the referenced value; it is not a complete dump of every live JavaScript object. Puppeteer’s API specifies that it does not call a value’s toJSON() method. If you need a few useful fields, return those explicitly through evaluate() instead of assuming JSON conversion will reveal every runtime detail.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
What remoteObject() returns
handle.remoteObject() exposes the protocol object behind the handle. The Puppeteer remoteObject() reference documents the method; that page showed version 25.11.0 when accessed, so check the reference for your installed Puppeteer version if details differ.
In CDP’s version 8 Runtime domain reference, Runtime.RemoteObject can describe a value with fields such as its type, subtype, class name, description, object identifier, serialized value, and certain primitive values that JSON cannot represent. It is protocol-level metadata, not a recursively copied JavaScript object. Use it when debugging CDP details; for ordinary application-state inspection, JSHandle methods are generally more direct.

When to use CDP directly
If you need protocol property descriptors or want to issue Runtime-domain commands yourself, create a CDP session with page.createCDPSession(). CDP’s Runtime property-inspection operation uses a remote object’s identifier and returns property descriptors. The Puppeteer Page API reference documents the page session API. This route is lower-level than getProperties(); choose it when the protocol descriptor details matter, rather than simply to read application data.
Dispose handles and account for navigation
Dispose handles that you no longer need. Puppeteer’s JSHandle documentation says handles otherwise keep their referenced objects from garbage collection. The associated frame navigating away or its parent execution context being destroyed automatically disposes them, but that does not replace cleanup during a long-running session where the context remains alive.

Dispose property handles as well as the original handle when you have finished with them. In the example above, both userHandle and handle are released.
Troubleshoot common inspection problems
- You expected a plain Node.js object.
evaluateHandle()returns a reference to a page-side value. Read a field withhandle.evaluate(), or request a serializable representation withjsonValue(). jsonValue()omits something you expected. It returns serializable portions and does not invoketoJSON(). Select specific values withevaluate(), or inspect CDP metadata withremoteObject()if the missing detail is protocol-level.- A property map does not contain every detail you need.
getProperties()provides property-name-to-handle mappings. For CDP property descriptors, use the lower-level Runtime property-inspection operation with a CDP session. - A handle no longer works after navigation. Navigation away from its frame or destruction of the parent context automatically disposes the handle. Create a new handle in the current page context.
- Objects remain referenced longer than expected. Dispose the original handle and any property handles you created once inspection is complete.
