Appium lets a test script automate mobile app interfaces through a common WebDriver-based API. It is an HTTP server plus separately installed platform drivers—not a test runner and not a promise that every command behaves the same on Android and iOS. For a first Android test, install Appium, prepare Android SDK and Java, start an emulator or connect a device, install the UiAutomator2 driver, and send commands from a client such as Python.

What Appium does—and what it does not

Appium is an open-source UI automation server and ecosystem that adopts the WebDriver API and protocol. A client library sends WebDriver-style commands; an Appium driver translates supported commands into the automation technology used by the target platform. As a result, a shared API can make test code more portable, but it does not make platform behavior identical: available commands and their effects depend on the driver and target.

Appium itself does not orchestrate test cases or prescribe a test framework. Use a language client with the runner and assertion library that suit your project; Appium handles the automation session and device interaction. The architecture is described in the Appium introduction.

How the client-server model works

Appium runs as an HTTP server process. Your test code uses a client library to send requests to that server, which routes them to the selected driver and the app or device. The client and server can run on the same computer, as in the local example below, or on separate machines, provided the client can reach the server over the network. This separation also allows a cloud service to host a server, drivers, and devices; check any provider’s supported capabilities and terms before relying on it.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android.You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  1. Test runner: starts the test and evaluates assertions; Appium does not replace it.
  2. Client library: turns your language-level calls into WebDriver-protocol requests.
  3. Appium server: accepts HTTP requests and routes them to the appropriate driver.
  4. Platform driver: maps supported commands to Android or Apple-platform automation.
  5. Target: the emulator, simulator, or physical device running the app under test.

Choose a driver for the target

Drivers are installed separately. Select one for the operating system, app mode, and current maintenance status; do not assume that every driver is equally maintained or supports the same commands. The live Appium driver catalog, dated 2026-10-01, distinguishes team-maintained drivers from other entries and includes maintenance notes.

Target Driver choice in the official catalog Modes listed Important qualification
Android UiAutomator2; Espresso is another official Android driver Native, hybrid, and web UiAutomator2 is the clearest beginner path in Appium’s Android quickstart.
iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS XCUITest Native, hybrid, and web Its setup requires macOS; consult its current documentation for Apple toolchain and version details.

Those mode labels are catalog coverage, not a guarantee that every app or command works without configuration. For community or third-party drivers, check the catalog’s maintenance notes rather than treating their status as equivalent to team-maintained drivers.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Prepare an Android environment

You can learn with an Android Studio-created Android Virtual Device (AVD); buying a phone is not required. A real Android device is also supported when it is set up for development and USB debugging is enabled. The steps below follow the UiAutomator2 setup guide (dated 2026-05-06) and Appium getting-started guide (version 3.0).

  1. Install Appium and check host requirements. Follow the current installation instructions for your operating system. Appium is started as a server process; it is not the client package used by your test.
  2. Install the Android SDK components. Install Android SDK Platform and Platform-Tools. Android Studio’s SDK Manager is one way to obtain them. Configure ANDROID_HOME to point to the SDK location.
  3. Install a Java JDK. Configure JAVA_HOME to point to the JDK installation.
  4. Choose and start a target. Create and start an AVD in Android Studio, or connect a development-enabled Android device with USB debugging on. Run adb devices and confirm the target appears in the list.
  5. Install and check the driver. In a terminal, run appium driver install uiautomator2, then appium driver doctor uiautomator2. Address any reported missing prerequisites before starting a session.
  6. Start the server. Run appium and leave the process running while the client connects. The CLI commands and related options are documented in the Appium CLI reference (dated 2026-03-12).
  7. Install a language client and write a test. The example below uses Python. Your test starts a session with capabilities, performs an interaction, and ends the session.

For iOS-family testing, the XCUITest route requires macOS. Its complete Apple tooling, signing, simulator/device, and version requirements are outside this Android walkthrough; consult the current XCUITest driver documentation before preparing that environment.

Run a first Android test with Python

Install the Python client with pip install Appium-Python-Client. Start the Appium server and an Android target first. The example follows Appium’s official Python test walkthrough (dated 2025-09-04): it opens Android Settings, finds the “Apps” item, clicks it, and quits the session.

from appium import webdriver
from appium.options.android import UiAutomator2Options
from appium.webdriver.common.appiumby import AppiumBy

options = UiAutomator2Options()
options.platform_name = "Android"
options.automation_name = "UiAutomator2"

# For a local server using the default Appium 2 base path:
driver = webdriver.Remote("http://127.0.0.1:4723", options=options)
try:
    apps_item = driver.find_element(AppiumBy.ACCESSIBILITY_ID, "Apps")
    apps_item.click()
finally:
    driver.quit()

This sample assumes the Android Settings app exposes an accessibility label of “Apps” on the target. Labels and screen contents can differ across Android versions or device builds; if the lookup fails, inspect the target’s actual UI and choose a locator that exists there. The finally block ensures the session is closed even if the interaction raises an error.

What happens in the script

  • UiAutomator2Options declares Android as the platform and UiAutomator2 as the automation engine.
  • webdriver.Remote connects to the running server and requests a session. The server and driver must be available at the specified endpoint.
  • find_element locates the element by accessibility identifier, and click sends the interaction through the driver.
  • driver.quit() ends the session and releases its automation resources.

For application tests rather than this Settings demonstration, configure the capabilities and app-under-test details required by the current driver documentation. Capabilities are driver-specific session configuration; avoid copying a capability from another platform without checking that driver’s support.

Choosing emulator, device, or remote execution

  • AVD emulator: useful for getting started without a physical phone. Appium’s setup guide supports this route but does not establish that an emulator reproduces every real-device condition.
  • Physical Android device: offers a real hardware target and requires development setup with USB debugging. No particular device model is required by the documented introductory route.
  • Remote server or cloud device: possible because the client and server communicate over HTTP and may run on separate computers. Confirm network reachability, driver availability, device support, and provider terms for your particular setup.

Troubleshooting a first session

  • adb devices shows no target: confirm the emulator is running or reconnect the phone, enable USB debugging for a physical device, and resolve any device authorization prompt. Run the command again before starting the test.
  • The doctor reports missing prerequisites: check that Android SDK Platform, Platform-Tools, and the JDK are installed, then verify ANDROID_HOME and JAVA_HOME point to the correct installations. Rerun appium driver doctor uiautomator2.
  • The client cannot connect: confirm the Appium server process is running and that the client URL uses the same host, port, and base path. The sample uses http://127.0.0.1:4723 for a local server.
  • Session creation fails: check that UiAutomator2 is installed, the target is visible to ADB, and the platform and automation-name capabilities match the Android driver. Use the server output and doctor results to identify setup failures.
  • Element lookup fails: the requested accessibility label may not exist on that Android version or screen. Inspect the current UI and use a locator appropriate to the element exposed by the app.
  • A command works on one platform but not another: driver support is not uniform. Check the target driver’s current documentation and catalog rather than assuming a WebDriver command is implemented identically everywhere.
