Use Shopify CLI to preview your local theme on a development store, then point Cypress at the preview URL and test the storefront in a real browser. Shopify and Cypress document the pieces separately; the workflow below combines them, rather than relying on a dedicated Shopify–Cypress integration.
What you need before testing
- A Shopify development store you can access, with representative products and collections for the scenarios you want to test.
- A valid Shopify theme directory. The expected structure includes folders such as
assets,config,layout,locales,sections,snippetsandtemplates. If your build process generates the theme, run Shopify CLI from that generated directory. - Shopify CLI authenticated for the target store, and a Cypress project configured according to your team’s existing setup.
Shopify’s theme CLI guide explains theme commands and directory expectations. The Cypress FAQ describes browser testing capabilities, but neither vendor documents a standard combined configuration, preview authentication method or first-party integration.
Create a Shopify theme preview
- From the theme directory, start a development preview for your store:
shopify theme dev --store my-store
Replacemy-storewith your store’s handle. - Follow the CLI output. It provides a local preview URL, a link to the Shopify admin theme editor and a shareable preview link. The documented local URL is
http://127.0.0.1:9292. - Keep the CLI process running while testing the local preview. CSS and section changes can hot reload; other file changes can refresh the page. Exact behavior depends on the CLI version and options in use.
- Use the preview link appropriate to your test runner. Cypress may visit local or remote pages, but your project must decide its base URL, access strategy and environment configuration.
theme dev uploads the local theme as a development theme. Development themes are temporary: Shopify says they are deleted after seven days of inactivity and when you run shopify auth logout. If a preview must remain useful after logout, push the development theme to an unpublished theme instead. For switching stores or environments, Shopify CLI supports repository-level environments configured in shopify.theme.toml; handle credentials using your team’s secret-management practices. Point Cypress at the preview and test real storefront behavior
In a Cypress test, visit the URL printed by Shopify CLI, then assert against the page a shopper would see. For example, with the local preview running:

});This is a starting pattern, not a Shopify-prescribed test harness. Adapt selectors to your theme and ensure the target URL and fixture data are stable. Cypress waits for a page’s load event after cy.visit(); the vendor’s FAQ documents this behavior.
Choose scenarios that expose theme regressions
- Open primary navigation and follow links to collections and products.
- Check collection cards, product details, variant or option controls, and product-form feedback.
- Exercise cart interactions and confirm the visible result, using the actual store behavior your test environment supports.
- Check key pages at desktop and narrower viewport sizes. Cypress supports viewport adjustment; use dimensions that reflect the layouts your theme is meant to support.
These are practical coverage recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular preview can exercise every Shopify service or state. Keep selectors tied to meaningful page behavior rather than fragile styling details where possible.
Use Cypress network commands for the right job
cy.intercept() observes, waits for or stubs requests made by the browser. Use it when a test needs to check a storefront request or deliberately supply a controlled response. cy.request() instead makes a request from Cypress’s Node process; it does not pass through the interception proxy and therefore cannot be observed by cy.intercept().

A useful division is to drive a shopper action through the UI, observe browser-originated traffic with cy.intercept(), and use cy.request() only when the runner needs to call an endpoint directly and inspect its response. Endpoint access and any persisted-result checks depend on the store and environment you have configured.
For tests intended to establish confidence in the integrated preview, avoid stubbing every relevant request: a fully stubbed test can prove that the UI handles a fixture, but not that the real Shopify-backed path works. Keep stubs for focused UI cases and retain tests that exercise the actual preview where appropriate.
Populate the development store with useful test data
Development stores start empty by default, but Shopify offers generated test data with common commerce primitives and configurations intended to help test themes, apps and custom storefronts. Use representative products, collections and configurations that match the behavior under test, and make fixture assumptions explicit in the suite. The official development-store guide describes generated data; it does not prescribe a Cypress-specific fixture workflow.

Know the checkout boundary
Shopify explicitly states: “You can’t preview checkout customizations using http://127.0.0.1:9292.” Cypress tests against that local preview can cover storefront theme behavior, but they should not be presented as validation of checkout customizations. The cited Shopify and Cypress documentation does not establish a Cypress-supported procedure for hosted checkout testing, so use Shopify’s current supported checkout test environment and guidance for that separate task. Complement browser tests with theme checks
Cypress covers rendered browser interactions; it is not the only useful layer in a theme-testing plan. Shopify CLI can run Theme Check. Shopify’s theme-testing article also discusses inspecting navigation and product forms with JavaScript disabled and using Lighthouse against a development-store preview link. Treat that article as broad testing guidance, not a definitive current Theme Store submission checklist.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
The CLI rejects the current directory
theme dev expects a valid theme structure. Change to the theme root, or to the generated theme directory if a build step produces the files Shopify should preview.

Cypress cannot load the preview
Confirm that shopify theme dev is still running and that Cypress is visiting the URL the CLI printed. If using a remote shareable link, check the link and store access in the browser context used by your tests; the vendor documentation does not define a universal authentication recipe for Cypress.
The preview changed or disappeared
A development theme can be replaced by another theme dev run for the active environment, and Shopify deletes development themes after seven days of inactivity or on shopify auth logout. Start the preview again or use an unpublished theme when persistence after logout is required.
Checkout customization assertions fail on localhost
This is a preview limitation, not necessarily a Cypress defect. Shopify says checkout customizations cannot be previewed at http://127.0.0.1:9292; keep those tests separate from local theme-preview coverage.

An intercepted request never appears
Check whether the request is made by the browser or through cy.request(). Cypress does not route the latter through the cy.intercept() proxy.
Pages render without products or the needed state
Development stores may be empty. Add or generate representative test data, then ensure the products, collections and configuration states used by the test actually exist in the selected store.
