Choose one that fills a specific gap—such as accessibility checks, code coverage, component testing, visual regression, or reporting—then verify its ownership, maintenance, and compatibility with your Cypress version. Cypress’s directory distinguishes official, community, and deprecated entries; community plugins are third-party dependencies, not Cypress-reviewed products. Browse the Cypress Plugins directory.
Which Cypress plugin should you choose?
Start with what your suite cannot do well today. Cypress’s directory covers a broad range of extensions, including bundlers and preprocessors, custom commands, network and API helpers, visual testing, accessibility, coverage, reporters, framework integrations, and CI support. These are versioned npm packages, not interchangeable add-ons.
| Testing need | Documented option | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Accessibility scans | Community cypress-axe; Cypress Accessibility in Cypress Cloud |
Use cypress-axe to add Axe-based checks to test code. Cypress Accessibility is a paid Cypress Cloud service with a different execution model. Automated scans cover only the rules and states checked; plan additional assertions or manual testing for relevant gaps. Cypress accessibility testing |
| Code coverage | Official @cypress/code-coverage |
The directory describes it as saving coverage collected during Cypress tests. Its listed version and supported Cypress range can change, so check the live entry and package documentation before installing. Cypress Plugins directory |
| Component testing | Official React and Vue packages bundled with Cypress | Choose the integration for the framework in use, then confirm its current Cypress and framework compatibility in the directory. Cypress Plugins directory |
| Visual regression | Percy (BrowserStack), Sauce Labs Visual, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io | Compare where rendering occurs, supported browser and viewport coverage, page-versus-element capture, baseline review and approval, setup requirements, compatibility, and current service costs. Cypress documents these as distinct integrations rather than declaring one universal winner. Cypress visual testing |
| Reporting | allure-cypress, cypress-terminal-report, and other directory entries |
Check the output format, CI artifact needs, support for screenshots or test steps, Cypress support range, and maintenance activity. |
| Network/API helpers or CI integrations | Multiple entries in the Cypress directory | Identify the specific request or CI workflow you need, then inspect the package’s current source, support range, and maintenance status. |
For any category, directory placement is a starting point, not a quality benchmark. Cypress labels entries official, community, or deprecated; community packages are community-owned and not reviewed by Cypress. A recent update date is useful to check, but it does not guarantee security, quality, or future compatibility. Check the current directory listing.
What “plugin” means in Cypress
The word can refer to different kinds of extensions. Some add browser-side commands or assertions; others run Node-side code for tasks such as preprocessing, browser launch handling, or filesystem work. The distinction matters because installation alone may not activate an extension: registration belongs in the execution context where that code runs. Cypress’s setup guide explains the configuration model and recommends checking compatibility with the Cypress version in your project. Read the Cypress plugin setup guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install and register an extension
- Check compatibility first. Look at the Cypress directory and the package’s current README for the supported Cypress version, required framework or Node version, and any migration notes.
- Install it as a development dependency. Use the package’s documented package-manager command. Cypress describes plugins as versioned npm packages; the exact package name and installation command depend on the extension.
- Register Node-side behavior in
setupNodeEvents. Follow the extension’s README for the correct import and configuration. This is where Node-side tasks, preprocessors, and browser-launch handlers belong. - Register browser-side commands in the support file. Add the package’s documented import or command setup in the support file used by your project.
- Run a focused test. Confirm that the expected command, task, report, or artifact is actually produced, and inspect CI behavior as well as local execution.
The Cypress guide and the package’s own current README should be used together: the guide explains Cypress’s registration contexts, while each extension specifies its setup details. Cypress plugin setup guide.
How to compare visual-testing integrations
- Execution and rendering: Determine whether snapshots are generated locally, by a hosted service, across cloud browsers, or in a particular CI workflow.
- Capture granularity: Check whether the workflow captures whole pages, individual elements, or component snapshots.
- Review workflow: Find out how baselines are created, how diffs are presented, and who approves changes.
- Setup and compatibility: Verify the Cypress and Node versions, SDK, project token, and account or service requirements for the integration you will use.
- Cost and operations: Check current service limits and pricing directly with the vendor; the available Cypress integration documentation does not establish a current price comparison.
As one concrete example, BrowserStack’s Percy Cypress guide specifies Percy Cypress SDK 3.0.0 or later, Cypress 13.10, and Node.js 20.9 among its prerequisites. Those are the values stated in that guide, not requirements that should be assumed for every Percy workflow; consult the current guide for your chosen setup. Percy Cypress integration guide.

Accessibility plugins: what automated checks can and cannot tell you
Cypress documents community cypress-axe as an integration that adds commands to inject Axe Core and run checks on a page or component. That can make repeatable automated checks part of a Cypress test, but a scan is not proof of full accessibility conformance: results depend on the rules run and the interface states exercised. Cypress advises understanding the selected library’s coverage and using manual testing or additional Cypress assertions for gaps that matter to your product. Cypress accessibility testing.
Cypress Accessibility is separate: Cypress describes it as a paid premium solution in Cypress Cloud. Its documentation says the service runs checks in Cypress Cloud as tests are recorded, without test-code changes or scan time added to runs. That statement applies to the Cypress Cloud service, not to cypress-axe or other plugins. Cypress testing types.
