Track visual test history by recording the rendering environment and code revision for every run, tying each run to the baseline it used, and keeping its diff and review decision accessible. A repository of versioned screenshot snapshots can be enough for a small team; hosted visual-testing tools become useful when you need searchable history, branch comparisons, or centralized review.

What to record for each visual test run

A screenshot is reproducible only when you know the conditions that produced it. At minimum, record the operating system, browser, and viewport. Add versions and other renderer conditions when they can change independently or affect output.

  • Test identity: test, page, or story name and a stable identifier.
  • Environment: operating system and version, browser and version, viewport dimensions, device scale factor, and headless or headed mode. Record relevant settings such as fonts when they are not fixed by the runner.
  • Code provenance: commit or build identifier, branch, and run timestamp.
  • Comparison outcome: baseline identifier, pass/fail or review status, and a link to the visual diff.
  • Decision: reviewer or approver, and a short reason when an intentional visual change is accepted.

Playwright cautions that host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect screenshots. Its guidance is to run comparisons in the same environment used to generate the baseline: Playwright visual comparisons.

Keep the environment key explicit rather than labeling a run only “CI” or “desktop.” A useful key might be linux-chromium-viewport-1440x900-dpr1, with exact versions stored alongside it. The point is to distinguish conditions that can produce meaningfully different pixels, not to create labels nobody can maintain.

Link runs to the right baseline and code change

A baseline should be identified by both the test and its rendering environment. Applitools documents baseline parameters including application, test, OS, viewport, and browser; by default, baselines are associated with their environment. It also documents an explicitly named baseline environment for intentional cross-environment comparisons. See Applitools’ cross-environment guidance for the concept, noting that the page dates to 2021.

  1. Assign each test a stable name or ID, then combine it with the environment dimensions used for comparison.
  2. Save the baseline reference or identifier selected for that run; do not assume the latest image is necessarily the baseline used.
  3. Attach the commit/build, branch, and timestamp to the run record.
  4. Store the result and a durable link to the diff, including whether it was approved, rejected, or left unresolved.
  5. When accepting a changed baseline, retain enough context to connect the approval to the code change that caused it.

This linkage helps distinguish a deliberate redesign from an accidental rendering shift. It also makes old failures diagnosable: a teammate should be able to find the exact run, see its environment and selected baseline, and inspect the diff and decision.

Choose where to keep snapshots and history

The right storage model depends on how much history you need to search and how your team reviews changes. The products below document different workflows; this is not a comparative performance evaluation. Check current retention, supported integrations, and plan details directly with each vendor because those can change.

Approach Fits when Check before adopting
Playwright snapshots in the repository You want reference images versioned with code and can review updates through your normal change process. Environment consistency, snapshot volume, review ergonomics, and how easily you can search history beyond Git. Playwright documents snapshot generation and comparison at Visual comparisons.
Chromatic You want hosted visual review with story baselines and branch-aware comparisons, as described in its branches and baselines documentation. Git history requirements, supported workflow, retention, and plan details. See also Chromatic visual tests.
BrowserStack Percy You want hosted snapshots compared with approved results and build history, with browser/device coverage configured for your workflow. Browser/version configuration, snapshot consumption, history retention by plan, and integrations. See Percy visual testing and BrowserStack cross-browser visual testing.
Applitools Eyes You want managed environment baselines and a visual-test history workflow. Verify current interface and feature details in current documentation; its detailed history article is dated 2021. See Applitools’ environment and history article and its cross-environment guidance.

Compare options on environment repeatability, baseline selection, commit and branch linkage, searchable history and retention, approval workflow, integrations, and maintenance effort. A repository workflow may be sufficient when pull-request review and Git history meet your needs. Consider managed history when locating old diffs, comparing branches, or coordinating approvals becomes cumbersome.

Make the history useful during diagnosis

When a screenshot changes unexpectedly, use the run record to answer the questions in sequence:

  1. Which test or story failed, and which commit and branch produced it?
  2. Which operating system, browser version, viewport, and other recorded renderer conditions were used?
  3. Which baseline did the run compare against, and was it an environment-specific baseline?
  4. Can you open the old diff and see whether it was approved, rejected, or left unresolved?
  5. Does the change reproduce in the baseline environment, or is the environment itself different?

Applitools’ 2021 history article describes filtering runs by attributes such as branch, browser, OS, and status. Treat that as a description of the documented workflow at publication time, not a guarantee of current labels or features: Applitools: How to Track Your Visual UI Test Environment and History.

If you need a screenshot of a page as a separate artifact rather than a repeatable test baseline, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server.
