The cause might be the input, encoder or output setup, the YouTube stream key, RTMPS configuration, or outbound connectivity. Check FFmpeg’s final stderr messages and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health report before changing settings; without your command and logs, the specific cause cannot be determined.
1. Capture the error before changing anything
Save the exact command, FFmpeg version, operating system and distribution, when the process exits, and the complete stderr output around the failure. A wrapper message such as “FFmpeg exited with code 1” only reports the exit status; the preceding FFmpeg messages are needed to identify the failing stage. FFmpeg documents how command options and input/output URLs work in its command-line documentation.
- Redact the YouTube stream key and any other credentials before sharing logs or commands.
- Do not suppress diagnostic output with a quiet log level while troubleshooting.
- Check option order. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, then reset between files; an option placed before the wrong
-ior output URL may not affect the intended stream.
2. Identify which stage is failing
Read stderr from the start of the run, not just the final line. Determine whether FFmpeg can read the source, find the expected audio and video streams, initialize codecs and the FLV output, and connect to and write to the selected destination. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes its input and output protocols; the precise message in your log is more useful than assuming every YouTube destination failure is a stream-key problem.

These are triage directions, not proof of a cause. A particular diagnosis requires the actual command, logs, stream-health message, and, where relevant, network results.

3. Check the active YouTube event and stream key
If FFmpeg fails to start the encoder connection, compare the destination URL and key in the command with the currently selected event in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s documented troubleshooting guidance recommends copying a new stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder when third-party encoder software reports a startup error. Confirm that the event has valid CDN settings and is receiving data. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps.
The YouTube Live API distinguishes stream states including created, ready, active, inactive, and error; its health states include good, ok, bad, and noData. Those states can help separate an event that is not ready or receiving data from a local FFmpeg setup problem. See the YouTube Live Streams API reference.

4. Match encoder settings to YouTube’s health message
Use Live Control Room’s specific health warning to decide which setting to investigate. YouTube’s encoder error catalog covers format and codecs, bitrate, audio settings, video settings, and keyframe frequency. It identifies H.264 video and AAC audio as expected stream formats and describes potential problems such as unsupported containers or codecs, incorrect bitrate, audio sample rate or channel count, missing or multiple audio/video streams, interlaced video, excessive frame rate, and keyframe frequency.
- If the warning concerns format or codecs, check that the stream uses H.264 video and AAC audio and that the output container and codec settings are supported.
- If it concerns bitrate, compare the configured bitrate with the warning rather than changing it speculatively.
- If it concerns audio, check sample rate, channel count, and whether the intended audio stream is present.
- If it concerns video, check that the expected video stream is present and whether the warning identifies interlacing or frame rate.
- If it concerns keyframes, YouTube says to send keyframes every two seconds and relates frame rate to keyframe frequency.
These settings are useful checks when YouTube reports a matching issue; none, by itself, explains an unspecified FFmpeg exit code.

5. Verify RTMPS and outbound connectivity
If the stderr message points to a connection, TLS, or output-protocol failure, obtain the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming the displayed ordinary RTMP URL is the one you need. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Paste the RTMPS URL into an encoder that supports RTMPS and use the current event’s key. Its RTMPS guidance says that for an SSL certificate error, verify both the protocol and server are rtmps and, if needed, specify port 443. For a timeout, verify the URL and RTMPS support in the encoder.
If the encoded stream looks healthy locally but YouTube or viewers still report trouble, YouTube recommends testing outbound internet connectivity. A connection problem should be established with the relevant test and error evidence, not presumed from the fact that FFmpeg runs on Linode.

6. Check the Linode instance without assuming it is the cause
On the host, verify that the source is reachable and readable, the installed FFmpeg build is the one you expect, stderr does not indicate resource pressure, and outbound connection attempts succeed. YouTube’s troubleshooting advice includes checking encoder errors and CPU load, reviewing the local archive or source, and testing outbound connectivity.
Linode’s FFmpeg installation guide shows an Ubuntu example using apt install ffmpeg and ffmpeg -version. Its displayed ffmpeg version 4.2.4-1ubuntu0.1 was built in 2020; it is an example from that guide, not a recommendation for a current package version. Available package versions depend on the distribution and its repositories.

7. Troubleshooting checklist
- Only a code 1 message is available: retrieve the full stderr and exact command; the exit code alone does not identify the cause.
- Input cannot be opened or streams are missing: check the source URL or path, permissions, format, and whether the expected audio/video streams exist.
- Failure begins during output setup: inspect option order, output format, URL, and protocol against the corresponding FFmpeg error.
- YouTube says the encoder cannot start: select the correct live event and copy its current stream key into the encoder.
- YouTube reports a configuration problem: change only the setting named by the health message, then verify whether stream health improves.
- RTMPS reports SSL or timeout errors: use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, confirm encoder support, and check the protocol/server and port guidance for SSL errors.
- Local encoding looks healthy but delivery does not: check YouTube’s health report and test outbound connectivity from the instance.
- Logs or a shared command contain a key: remove the secret before sharing; if it has been exposed, replace it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
