Puppeteer’s Page.pdf() and Playwright’s page.pdf() render with print CSS active by default, so print-specific layout rules and pagination apply. If you need screen styling instead, select screen media before generating the PDF.
How print CSS is applied when an API creates a PDF
A PDF capture is more than an image of the current viewport: the browser lays out the document for printing and paginates it. Both Puppeteer and Playwright use print media for PDF generation by default. See the Puppeteer Page.pdf() documentation and Playwright Page documentation.
That means @media print rules can hide navigation or restyle content, while @page can specify page size and margins. Print output may change colors from their on-screen appearance; both APIs document this behavior. If preserving exact colors matters, use -webkit-print-color-adjust: exact in your print styles and inspect the resulting PDF.
Generate a PDF with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project using its current installation instructions, then run a flow like this. Replace the example URL with the page you are authorized to capture.

})();Page.pdf() returns PDF data. Puppeteer’s guide shows the navigate-then-generate sequence and notes that PDF generation waits for fonts by default. The networkidle2 navigation condition is an example, not a universal readiness test: pages with persistent requests, lazy content, authentication, or client-side rendering may need a different wait condition or an application-specific readiness signal. Use a print stylesheet
Add rules to the site’s stylesheet, or inject equivalent CSS before generating the PDF. These rules are a starting point; verify page breaks and clipping in the actual output.

}PDF options such as page format and background printing affect the output alongside CSS. Content length, fonts, assets, overflow, and browser layout all influence pagination; a rule such as break-inside: avoid cannot guarantee that a large element will fit on one page.
Choose print or screen media deliberately
Keep the default print media when the PDF should reflect print-specific styles. To generate a PDF with screen styling, select screen media before calling the PDF method. Both APIs document this alternative.

What to inspect before using the PDF
- Check that headers, footers, navigation, consent banners, and other unwanted elements are hidden as intended.
- Review page breaks around headings, tables, figures, and long blocks of text.
- Look for clipped or overflowing content, missing images, and fonts that have not loaded.
- Confirm page size, margins, background graphics, and printed colors match the document’s purpose.
- Test representative pages, especially pages with lazy-loaded content, long tables, or authenticated material.
Common problems and fixes
The PDF uses the wrong layout
PDF methods default to print media. If you intended screen styles, explicitly emulate screen media before generating the file. If print styles are intended, remove any earlier screen-media emulation.

Images or application content are missing
The page may not have finished loading the material needed for capture. A generic network-idle wait can be unsuitable for pages with continuing requests; wait for a relevant selector, application-ready signal, or other page-specific condition before generating the PDF.
Colors look washed out or disappear
Browsers may modify colors for printing. Enable exact color adjustment in CSS with -webkit-print-color-adjust: exact, then check the generated file; do not assume screen colors will automatically carry over.

Content splits or clips across pages
Inspect the print stylesheet, page size, and margins. Use page-break rules selectively, and test large elements because avoiding a break inside an element cannot make content that exceeds a page fit.

Yes. The browser PDF methods return PDF data or a buffer; send those bytes from your application with the appropriate PDF content type.
