Chrome DevTools can help you find many accessibility problems, inspect what assistive technology is exposed to, and see how a page responds to display preferences. It cannot prove that a website is accessible: you must also test keyboard operation and use a screen reader on important user flows.

What Chrome can—and cannot—tell you

Accessibility testing asks at least two different questions: can a person operate the page with a keyboard or screen reader, and is the page’s content properly represented to assistive technology? Lighthouse and DevTools can flag many markup and contrast issues. The Accessibility panel helps you inspect the browser’s accessibility tree. Neither an automated score nor an empty list of findings establishes that a page works for disabled users.

Chrome’s accessibility guidance puts the distinction plainly: “The only way to find errors related to question #1 is to try using a page with a keyboard or screen reader yourself.” Treat automated checks as a way to find and investigate problems, then test interaction directly.

Run a Lighthouse accessibility audit

  1. Open the page and the specific state you want to test—for example, a dialog after it opens or a form after validation errors appear.
  2. Open Chrome DevTools. In the DevTools panel, select Lighthouse. If it is not visible, open the panel menu and choose it from the available panels; labels and layout can vary by Chrome version.
  3. Choose the device category that matches the layout you want to examine, select the Accessibility category, and generate the report.
  4. Review each finding, open its explanation, and use the affected element or location to inspect the page. Verify the issue in context before changing code.
  5. Repeat for materially different states and layouts. If the mobile layout differs from desktop, run an audit for that layout too.

A report is a list of detected issues under the audit’s checks, not a complete inventory of barriers. A passing score is not a conformance verdict, and an individual finding may need human review to determine its practical impact.

Inspect an element in the accessibility tree

  1. In DevTools, open Elements and select an important element in the DOM, such as a button, form field, heading, or dialog.
  2. Open the selected node’s Accessibility pane or tab. Depending on the Chrome version and panel layout, it may appear alongside the Styles pane or within the Elements side panel.
  3. Inspect the node’s position in the accessibility tree, ARIA attributes, and computed accessibility properties. Check that its accessible name, role, and state match what the control does.
  4. Compare the selected node with its DOM counterpart. If something expected is absent or represented differently, inspect the markup, ARIA, visibility, and whether the element is actually exposed to assistive technology.

The tree is the browser’s representation of elements exposed to assistive technology; it is useful for diagnosis, but it does not tell you by itself whether a person can use the page successfully. For example, a button can have a sensible name in the tree and still be unreachable by keyboard or fail to perform the expected action.

Check source order, contrast, and display preferences

Compare source order with the visual layout

When CSS changes the visual arrangement, check that the document order still makes sense when read or navigated sequentially. Chrome’s Source Order Viewer numbers elements in source order so you can compare that order with the rendered page. A visual layout that looks correct can still produce a confusing sequence for keyboard users or assistive technology.

Investigate color contrast

Use Lighthouse findings or DevTools contrast issue reporting and the color picker to investigate text and background combinations. Check the actual states users encounter, including hover, focus, disabled, and error states. A tool’s contrast indication can help locate a problem; confirm the relevant colors and text in the rendered context before deciding how to fix it.

For historical context, Chrome’s contrast guidance cited WebAIM’s finding that 83.9% of the top million home pages had low-contrast text in February 2022. That is a dated statistic, not a current estimate.

Emulate user display preferences

In DevTools, open the Rendering panel and use its emulation controls to inspect how the page responds to simulated vision deficiencies, forced colors, contrast preferences, light or dark color schemes, reduced motion, and reduced transparency. Availability and labels can vary between Chrome versions. These simulations are inspection aids; they do not reproduce every user’s experience or replace testing with users and assistive technology.

Test reflow and enlarged content

Use Chrome’s Device Toolbar to resize the viewport and examine narrow layouts. Check that content reflows without hiding information or requiring awkward horizontal scrolling. Also test layouts with enlarged text or zoom. Resizing is a useful way to expose problems, not by itself proof of conformance.

Test keyboard and screen-reader interaction manually

Keyboard check

  1. Reload the page and begin at the start of its interactive content. Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move through controls; use the relevant keys, such as arrow keys, Enter, or Space, to operate them.
  2. Confirm that every control needed for the task can receive focus, that the focus indicator is visible, and that the sequence follows a sensible reading and task order.
  3. Exercise important flows—not just the initial page. Open and close menus and dialogs, complete and submit forms, trigger validation, and verify that focus remains usable when content changes.
  4. Check that keyboard users can leave components such as dialogs or menus and are not trapped unexpectedly.

Screen-reader check

Use a screen reader available for your operating system and test the same important flows. For each control, listen for an appropriate name, role, and state: for example, whether a control is announced as a button, what it does, and whether it is expanded or checked. Check that headings, landmarks, form labels, errors, and dynamic updates are understandable in context. A name visible in the Accessibility pane does not guarantee that announcements and navigation make sense during real use.

Fix findings and verify the result

  • Reproduce each reported issue in the page state where it occurs, then identify the cause in the DOM, styles, or interaction behavior.
  • Fix the underlying problem rather than hiding a warning with an ARIA attribute that does not reflect the control’s actual purpose or state.
  • Rerun the relevant Lighthouse audit and inspect the changed node in the Accessibility pane.
  • Repeat the keyboard and screen-reader checks for affected controls and flows. Automated results and manual interaction checks answer different questions.

Optional: axe DevTools

Deque’s axe DevTools browser extension offers basic page-by-page automated checks without requiring a paid plan; paid plans add features such as guided tests and broader workflow integrations. Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Lighthouse accessibility score certify that my website is accessible?

No. It reports results from automated checks; keyboard and screen-reader interaction still need to be tested directly.

Can a screenshot show whether a page works with a screen reader?

No. A screenshot records visual output, not the accessibility tree, spoken announcements, keyboard focus behavior, or whether a task can be completed.
