Use AI to draft or adapt a test, suggest browser locators, and help interpret a real failure—but treat its output as a proposal, not proof of correctness or complete coverage. Give it a bounded task, relevant requirements and project conventions, verify browser details against the running application, execute and repeat the test, then review the code and dependencies before merging. For products that use AI, test the application, model, data, and infrastructure as well.
Where AI fits in a test automation workflow
AI is most useful when it helps with a specific piece of work that a developer or tester can verify: drafting a unit or API test, identifying edge cases for a requirement, adapting an existing test to a code change, proposing browser locators, or interpreting a concrete test failure. It does not establish that a suite covers every important behavior, and generated tests should not be trusted without review.
Keep a person responsible for the requirement, expected behavior, and merge decision. The model can accelerate drafting and diagnosis; the test runner, application evidence, and human review establish whether the result is useful.
A practical, human-reviewed workflow
-
Choose one bounded task
Ask for a test tied to a specific requirement or code change—for example, an API test for a validation rule, a unit test for a boundary condition, or one browser scenario for a checkout step. Provide relevant project documentation and examples of nearby tests. GitHub recommends checking AI output against requirements, project purpose, architecture, and design patterns, and using trusted project documents as context: GitHub’s guidance on testing code with Copilot.

Ground browser tests in the live application
Do not ask a model to infer the page structure from a feature description alone. Let it inspect the application if the workflow supports that, or supply current, relevant evidence such as the page markup or a screenshot. Ask it to propose locators, then verify each locator against the running page before using it in a test. Selenium’s official AI-agent guidance emphasizes verifying locators against the running application rather than inferring them: Selenium WebDriver interactions.
-
Provide the actual failure evidence
When debugging, share the exact exception and relevant logs; a failure screenshot can help when the problem is visual or timing-related. Include what you expected, what happened, and the smallest relevant code or test excerpt. Concrete evidence gives the model something to diagnose rather than encouraging a plausible but unverified guess. Selenium’s guide also describes using exception details and screenshots to investigate failures.

-
Run the individual test and iterate
Execute the proposed test locally against the intended application and environment. Fix errors, then run it more than once. A single passing run does not rule out a race condition or timing-sensitive failure; Selenium recommends repeated runs before treating a test as reliable.
-
Review the change before merging
Compare assertions with the requirement, run the relevant suite and static analysis, and inspect generated code and dependencies. Check that the change has not introduced an unapproved package or license issue, ignored a constraint, used a nonexistent API, or weakened coverage by deleting or skipping a failing test. GitHub specifically warns about these failure modes in its AI-assisted testing guidance.

How to write a useful request
Give the model the smallest context that lets it do the task accurately, plus a clear boundary around what it should not change. A practical request can include:
- The requirement or behavior under test, including expected results and important edge cases.
- The framework, language, project conventions, and a nearby example test.
- Relevant source or trusted project documentation, with secrets and unnecessary personal data removed.
- For browser work, current application state or access to the running app, and a request to verify proposed locators.
- For debugging, the complete relevant exception, logs, and a screenshot if it helps show the failure.
- A constraint such as “suggest a test only; do not edit production code or remove existing tests.”
Ask for a concise explanation of the proposed assertions and any assumptions. Then verify those assumptions against the requirement and application rather than accepting confident-sounding output.

Safeguards for generated tests and AI-enabled products
Review generated code as untrusted code
Generated code can look plausible while containing incorrect logic, hallucinated APIs, ignored constraints, or suspicious dependencies. Use functional checks, static analysis, dependency and licensing review, and human inspection. A test that passes is not necessarily a good test if its assertions do not check the required behavior or if it passes by skipping the scenario.
Test AI behavior with representative and adversarial inputs
If the product accepts user input and invokes a model, assess more than ordinary happy paths. OpenAI recommends testing representative inputs and adversarial inputs designed to expose failure modes such as prompt injection, evaluating a range of potential inputs, and using human review where possible—particularly for generated code. These are safeguards, not proof that a model or application is safe.

Include the whole AI system in scope
OWASP’s AI Testing Guide Version 1.0 organizes assessment across AI application, AI model, AI data, and AI infrastructure testing, using the sequence Define Objective → Execute Test → Interpret Response → Recommend Remediation. That wider scope helps teams examine whether a failure originates in the interface, model behavior, data handling, or supporting infrastructure. The guide describes a testing methodology, not a required vendor or tool: OWASP AI Testing Guide.

There is no evidence here to support a universal best AI testing vendor. Evaluate options against your actual workflow and verify current vendor details before adopting a product. Useful comparison questions include:
- Does it fit the framework and language already used by the team?
- Does it generate code, interact with a live browser, evaluate AI behavior, or combine these jobs?
- Can it inspect real application state and use useful diagnostics such as exceptions, screenshots, or logs?
- Can proposed tests be reviewed, repeated, and integrated with existing CI and static analysis?
- What do its current security and privacy terms say about source code, prompts, credentials, and test data?
- What are its current support, licensing, and pricing terms?
A 2024 study by Vahid Garousi, Nithin Joy, and Alper Buğra Keleş reports reviewing 55 AI-based test automation tools and empirically assessing two selected tools on two open-source projects. Those figures describe that study’s scope; they do not establish general productivity gains or prove one vendor is superior: the study abstract.

Common failure modes and fixes
- A proposed locator does not find the element: The page may have changed, or the locator may have been inferred rather than checked. Inspect the live page, confirm the element and locator, then update the test based on current application state.
- The test passes once but fails intermittently: Treat a one-time pass as insufficient. Repeat the individual test, inspect timing and state assumptions, and use appropriate waits rather than assuming the first success proves stability.
- The suggested API or import does not exist: Generated code may hallucinate an API or use a version that differs from the project. Check the installed framework version and trusted project documentation, then replace or remove unsupported code.
- A change makes the failure disappear by skipping or deleting a test: Review the diff and restore the test unless there is a justified requirement change. Investigate the original failure instead of treating its removal as a fix.
- A generated test passes without checking the requirement: Compare its setup, actions, and assertions with the expected behavior; add assertions that would fail if the requirement were broken.
- The model’s diagnosis conflicts with logs or screenshots: Prefer the reproducible application evidence. Provide the relevant exception and artifact, narrow the question, and test any proposed fix rather than accepting the explanation.
