Image performance shapes how quickly a page’s main content appears, how much mobile data it uses, and whether visitors can see images clearly. The practical goal is not to shrink every image or defer them all: serve an appropriately sized, visually fit image, prioritize the important image in the initial viewport, and defer images lower on the page.
Why image performance changes the experience
Images can account for a large share of a page’s bytes, and a prominent image may be the page’s largest visible element. When that image arrives late, the page can feel unfinished even if other content has loaded. When every image competes for bandwidth at once, the image or other resource a visitor needs first may take longer to arrive.
The effects are especially relevant on mobile: web.dev says desktop-sized images can use 2–4 times more data than appropriately sized images on mobile. The exact saving depends on the image and the display size, but sending an oversized asset wastes bandwidth and can delay rendering.
How images affect Core Web Vitals
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)
LCP records when the largest visible image, text block, or video has rendered. A hero or product image may be the LCP element, so its discovery, download, and display can determine when the page’s primary content appears. Google recommends assessing the 75th percentile and aiming for LCP of 2.5 seconds or less. See web.dev’s LCP guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Interaction and visual stability
Images most directly affect loading performance, but they can also contribute to layout movement if the page does not reserve their space. Google’s good-experience targets are INP below 200 milliseconds and CLS below 0.1, alongside LCP at or below 2.5 seconds. These are page experience targets, not a guarantee of sales or search ranking. Google describes Core Web Vitals as measures of real-world loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability in its Core Web Vitals guidance, last updated 2025-12-10 UTC.
What image optimization should—and should not—do
Optimize bytes without sacrificing the image’s job. A product image should remain clear enough to inspect; a decorative thumbnail may tolerate more compression. Google’s image SEO guidance notes that high-quality, sharp images appeal to users, while images can be among the largest contributors to page size. Compare file-size savings with rendered quality at realistic screen sizes, rather than judging only the source file or a performance score.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Right-size: provide image variants matched to likely display dimensions, rather than using a desktop original everywhere.
- Compress thoughtfully: reduce transfer size while checking that details important to the image’s purpose remain legible.
- Prioritize what users see first: make the hero or product image available promptly if it is in the initial viewport.
- Defer what users have not reached: lazy-load below-the-fold images so they do not all compete during initial rendering.
Google’s Image SEO Best Practices and web.dev responsive-image guide cover resizing, responsive candidates, and optimization approaches.
Should you lazy-load images above the fold?
Usually, do not blindly lazy-load the image that is visible at initial load, especially if it is the LCP element. A browser that waits to discover that image can delay the page’s main content. Lazy loading is better suited to images below the fold, where it can avoid downloading content a visitor may never scroll to.

In web.dev’s demo WordPress archive-page lab tests, disabling default lazy loading improved LCP by 13% on desktop and 15% on mobile, while increasing image bytes. A revised approach—loading in-viewport images eagerly and lazy-loading below-the-fold images—improved archive LCP by 14% on desktop and 18% on mobile relative to that demo’s default configuration. These results describe one demo site and its test conditions, not a universal gain for every website. Read web.dev’s analysis of lazy-loading performance.
Do faster images improve conversions or revenue?
They can remove a source of friction, but the available conversion figure does not prove that image optimization by itself increases sales. Think with Google’s summary of Google/SOASTA Research (2016) reported that converted sessions had 38% fewer images than sessions that did not convert; image count was the second-greatest predictor of conversion in that analysis. This is an observed association, not a randomized test of image compression or image removal. Image count may reflect page complexity and other differences between sessions. See Think with Google’s mobile page-speed discussion.

Do not remove useful product, instructional, or trust-building images simply to reduce a count. Treat conversions and revenue as site-specific outcomes to measure alongside performance and image quality.
A practical image-performance workflow
- Find the LCP element. Check field data for the page on mobile and desktop, and identify whether its LCP element is an image. Examine the 75th-percentile experience rather than relying on one load.
- Match files to devices. Generate responsive image candidates and deliver one suited to the rendered size. Avoid making small screens download desktop-sized assets.
- Set loading priority intentionally. Ensure the important image visible on initial load is not deferred; lazy-load images below the fold. Recheck which image the browser discovers first.
- Inspect visual quality. Review the rendered image at realistic screen sizes and confirm that compression has not obscured details visitors need.
- Measure both user experience and business outcomes. Use field data for the experience visitors receive; use lab tools such as PageSpeed Insights or Lighthouse to investigate implementation changes. Track conversion outcomes in your own analytics and use a suitable comparison before attributing a change to image work. Google recommends checking Core Web Vitals in Search Console.
