To build a web application with Python, choose one small project, pick a framework that fits its shape, then connect a request or page to validation, stored data, tests, and a production deployment. Django is a strong fit for conventional sites that benefit from integrated facilities; Flask suits small applications where you want to choose the structure and extensions; FastAPI is designed around HTTP APIs and includes interactive API documentation. Start with Python basics and HTML/CSS, and learn one framework by finishing a working slice rather than comparing every framework at once.

What to learn before building with Python

You do not need to master every part of Python before starting, but you should be comfortable reading and writing functions, working with modules, handling common data structures, and understanding exceptions. Basic HTML and CSS help if your project serves pages. A practical learning path starts with those foundations and moves into frameworks, APIs, and deployment. Real Python’s web developer learning path likewise assumes Python basics and begins with HTML and CSS.

Choose a project small enough to complete: for example, a reading list with a form to add an item and a page to show saved items. Build one complete vertical slice: accept a request, validate its input, save or retrieve data, and return a useful page or response. That exercise reveals what you need to learn next without requiring a survey of every Python web tool.

Should you use Django, Flask, or FastAPI?

These frameworks serve different project shapes; the documentation does not establish a universal winner based on speed, popularity, or hiring. Compare how much structure and functionality you want supplied versus how much you want to choose yourself.

Framework Typical fit What the cited documentation emphasizes Trade-off to consider
Django A conventional web application or server-rendered site Its getting-started material highlights forms and an admin interface. Django getting started Integrated facilities can reduce the number of separate choices, while the framework’s conventions shape the project.
Flask A small or flexible application where you want to select the structure and extensions The official tutorial builds a blog with registration, login, and content editing; Flask does not require a fixed project layout or extension set. Flask tutorial Flexibility means you must decide how to organize the project and which additions it needs.
FastAPI An HTTP API that accepts and returns structured data The first-steps tutorial describes generated interactive API documentation and an OpenAPI schema. FastAPI first steps Generated API documentation helps people explore endpoints, but does not replace tests or broader technical documentation.

Choose by what you are building

  • Pick Django when you want an integrated route for a conventional web application, including facilities such as forms and admin.
  • Pick Flask when you prefer a lightweight starting point and want to make explicit decisions about structure and extensions.
  • Pick FastAPI when the main product is an API and interactive endpoint documentation and an OpenAPI schema are useful.

These are starting points, not restrictions: the project’s requirements and the current framework documentation should guide implementation.

How to build a first Python web application

  1. Define one user task. Write down the request the app must handle and the result it should return. Keep the first version small enough to complete end to end.
  2. Choose a framework. Use the comparison above to decide whether integrated web-app facilities, flexible assembly, or API-oriented development best matches the task.
  3. Create an isolated environment. Keep project dependencies separate from other Python projects, and record them reproducibly. The FastAPI tutorial demonstrates a workflow using uv, a project .venv, and uv.lock; it also describes a pip-based option. Those are documented choices, not mandatory tools for every Python project.
  4. Build the request-to-response path. Add a route, validate incoming form fields or API data, and return a page or structured response that makes success and errors clear.
  5. Persist data when the project needs it. Define the data the app must retain, connect it to database access, and test the path that saves and retrieves it.
  6. Add access controls where required. Use authentication to establish who a user is and authorization to control what that user can do. Do not add these mechanisms blindly; decide based on the data and actions the project exposes.
  7. Write tests and run them during development. Test important behavior such as validation, data persistence, and expected responses. Generated API documentation is useful, but it does not verify that an endpoint behaves correctly.
  8. Deploy separately from local development. Configure production settings, HTTPS, static and media handling as applicable, logging or error reporting, and process startup and restarts before exposing the app to users.

How to make a Python API

For a project whose main interface is HTTP endpoints that accept and return structured data, FastAPI is a natural framework to evaluate. Its first-steps documentation describes interactive API documentation and an OpenAPI schema, which make endpoints easier to inspect and describe. See the FastAPI first-steps tutorial for the framework’s current setup and examples.

Regardless of framework, define what each endpoint accepts, what it returns, and how invalid input or failed operations are represented. Keep tests alongside the API, and provide technical documentation for behavior and constraints that an automatically generated schema cannot explain. If a browser-based frontend consumes the API, decide how it will send requests and handle the responses as part of the project rather than treating the API as an isolated function.

Organize dependencies and project structure

Use a project-specific environment so that installing a package for one app does not silently alter another project’s dependencies. Record the dependencies and, where your chosen workflow supports it, a lockfile so the environment can be recreated more consistently. The FastAPI tutorial’s uv, .venv, and uv.lock example is one current documented workflow; its pip option is another. Follow the current instructions for the framework and package manager you actually select.

For Flask in particular, the absence of a required layout is not a reason to leave the project unstructured. Choose a layout that makes routes, templates or response logic, data access, configuration, and tests easy to find. Django and FastAPI projects also benefit from clear separation of responsibilities; use the framework’s current conventions rather than copying a structure without understanding it.

Deploy a Python web app safely

A local development server is for development, not public production traffic. Django’s official deployment documentation states: “The runserver command starts a lightweight development server, which is not suitable for production.” Django supports both WSGI and ASGI interfaces: WSGI is synchronous, while ASGI is asynchronous-friendly. Which interface and production server fit depends on the application and its operational requirements. Review the Django deployment documentation for static files, error reporting, and the framework’s deployment checklist.

FastAPI’s deployment concepts call attention to HTTPS, startup behavior, restarts, replication, memory, and pre-start steps. HTTPS is commonly provided by a TLS termination proxy or a cloud service, and certificate renewal needs an owner. Provider-specific setup, costs, and constraints vary; there is no universally best host established here. See FastAPI deployment concepts.

Production readiness checklist

  • Use a production-capable server and interface rather than the framework’s development server.
  • Separate development and production configuration; keep secrets out of source code and provide them through the deployment environment.
  • Enable HTTPS and decide who is responsible for certificate setup and renewal.
  • Plan how static files and, where applicable, user-uploaded media will be served and stored.
  • Arrange process startup, restart behavior, and error reporting so failures can be found and addressed.
  • Review the current deployment checklist for your framework and verify each item against your application and hosting provider.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot from Python, make one GET request. Install the requests package in your project environment first, then run:

import requests

r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Replace the example target URL with the page you need and supply your API key. The response is a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF according to the requested output and settings. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Common problems and what to check

  • The project works locally but fails after deployment: Check production configuration, dependency installation, the server/interface setup, startup behavior, and error logs. A development server is not a production deployment.
  • Static files are missing: Confirm that production static-file handling is configured; Django’s deployment guidance specifically includes static files in its deployment considerations.
  • An API endpoint is difficult to use: Make its accepted inputs and returned data clear, and use generated documentation where supported. For FastAPI, interactive docs and an OpenAPI schema are documented capabilities; still test the endpoint’s behavior.
  • A dependency change breaks another project: Use an isolated environment and record the project’s dependencies rather than relying on a shared global installation.
  • Failures are hard to diagnose: Arrange error reporting and inspect production logs; ensure process startup and restart behavior are deliberately configured.
  • HTTPS certificates lapse or are absent: Identify whether a TLS proxy, cloud service, or another part of the deployment provides HTTPS, and assign responsibility for certificate renewal.
