A Selenium StaleElementReferenceException means the WebElement you saved no longer refers to an element attached to the current page DOM. In most cases, wait for the relevant page change, then locate the element again using a saved By locator. Don’t keep reusing the stale reference.
What causes a stale element exception?
Selenium checks whether an element reference is still fresh when you call a method on its WebElement. If the node is no longer in the DOM, that reference—and later calls through it—cannot be used. A replacement node that matches the same selector is a new DOM object, not a revival of the old reference. Selenium’s Java API defines the exception as a reference to an element that no longer appears in the page DOM, and its WebElement API documents freshness checks.
- A refresh or navigation replaces the page document.
- A dynamic page redraw removes and recreates a node during an update.
- The active window or frame changes, so the reference belongs to a different browsing context.
Staleness is about the lifetime of the saved reference, not necessarily a bad selector. If the same locator finds the intended element after the update, the locator may still be correct. Selenium’s troubleshooting guide covers these causes and recommends checking page state, locator correctness, DOM updates, and synchronization.
Use a locator and wait for the state you need
For ordinary interactions, keep a By locator and ask Selenium to find the current element when the action is ready. The following Java example uses Selenium 4-style Duration timeouts and waits until the located button is visible and enabled:

import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.WebDriverWait;
By saveButton = By.cssSelector("button.save");
new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10))
.until(ExpectedConditions.elementToBeClickable(saveButton))
.click();
elementToBeClickable(By) returns the currently located element after checking visibility and enabled state, according to Selenium’s ExpectedConditions Java API. It is not a guarantee against a redraw after the condition succeeds and before the click command executes; if the UI can change in that interval, wait for the application’s meaningful state or handle that known race narrowly.
Choose the right recovery pattern
| Situation | What to wait for | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| A known old element should be removed or replaced | stalenessOf(oldElement) |
Locate the replacement using its locator |
| A condition can race with a redraw | refreshed(condition) |
Let the condition be evaluated again against the updated DOM |
| You need an element in a target state | A locator-based visibility or clickability condition | Use the element returned by the wait |
| A known transient race affects a safe operation | A bounded, narrow retry after re-location | Repeat only if doing so cannot duplicate a side effect |
Wait for the old element to detach
Use stalenessOf when the action is expected to replace a particular element. After it detaches, wait for the replacement by locator:

By resultsLocator = By.id("results");
WebElement oldPanel = driver.findElement(resultsLocator);
driver.findElement(By.id("refresh-results")).click();
WebDriverWait wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10));
wait.until(ExpectedConditions.stalenessOf(oldPanel));
WebElement newPanel = wait.until(
ExpectedConditions.visibilityOfElementLocated(resultsLocator));
stalenessOf succeeds when the original element is no longer attached to the DOM. If the application updates the existing node rather than replacing it, staleness may never occur; wait for a specific changed value, loading indicator, or other state that reflects the actual update instead.
Re-evaluate a condition across a redraw
Use refreshed if a redraw may happen between the lookup and the condition’s check:

WebElement result = new WebDriverWait(driver, Duration.ofSeconds(10))
.until(ExpectedConditions.refreshed(
ExpectedConditions.visibilityOfElementLocated(
By.cssSelector(".result"))));
The condition is based on a locator, so it can find the current matching element when evaluated. Selenium documents refreshed for cases where an element updates or redraws between the parts of a condition.
Retry only when repetition is safe
For a transient redraw race, a small bounded retry can re-locate before attempting an operation again. Catch StaleElementReferenceException narrowly rather than catching every WebDriverException. Most importantly, repeat only an idempotent action or one otherwise known to be safe. For example, retrying a read is usually safer than retrying a purchase or submission: the first click may already have succeeded even if a later read went stale or navigation was delayed. Prefer a wait for the expected UI state over a generic retry loop.

Diagnose the failure before changing the locator
- Check which window and frame are active when the exception is thrown. Switch to the intended context before looking up the element.
- Confirm that earlier navigation or interaction has completed and identify the expected next page state.
- Determine whether the target node was removed, replaced, or merely has not reached the state your code expects.
- Re-find it from a stable locator after that state occurs. Avoid retaining a
WebElementacross refreshes, navigation, or an update that can redraw the target.
A fixed Thread.sleep does not prove that the relevant change has happened: it can waste time on a fast run and still be too short on a slow one. Use a condition-based explicit wait for the transition or target state. If you use implicit waits elsewhere, consult Selenium’s waits guide before mixing them with explicit waits; timing behavior can become harder to reason about.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Reusing the old
WebElementafter a page update: retain theBylocator and find a fresh element after the update. - Assuming the selector is wrong: first check whether the same selector finds the intended replacement; a valid selector can match a new node while the saved reference is stale.
- Assuming clickability prevents every stale failure: visibility and enabled state are checked at evaluation time, not guaranteed through a later redraw.
- Catching broad driver exceptions and retrying: this can mask unrelated failures or repeat a side effect. Catch only the stale exception where the race is understood.
- Waiting for staleness when the node is updated in place: wait for a changed attribute, text, or application-specific completion state instead.
Performance and reliability trade-offs
Locating through a saved By at the point of use avoids relying on a long-lived element reference, but each lookup is a WebDriver command. On a remote grid, repeated lookups can add latency; Selenium’s troubleshooting guidance notes this trade-off. Balance it by locating close to the interaction and waiting for the state you actually need, rather than polling with an unnecessarily broad retry loop.

The ten-second waits in the examples are illustrative timeout choices, not a Selenium-mandated value or a measured benchmark. Set a timeout appropriate to the application and test environment, and use a condition that can fail clearly when the expected state never arrives.
