To fix a JavaScript error, reproduce it with your browser’s developer tools open, read the console message and source location, then inspect the code and runtime values at that point. First identify whether it is a syntax error, a runtime error, or a logic problem; each calls for a different kind of investigation.
Start with the browser console
- Reproduce the action that triggers the problem, such as loading a page, submitting a form, or opening a menu.
- Open your browser’s developer tools and select the Console. Labels and layouts vary by browser.
- Find the relevant error entry. Record its message and the linked file and line or location. If several messages appear, start with the first error associated with the failing action; later errors may be consequences.
- Open the linked source location and inspect the failing statement and the values it uses. The message is a clue, not always a complete explanation, and wording can differ between browsers.
JavaScript errors have a name and a message. The console may also link to an explanation of a familiar error. Use those details to narrow the cause, then verify it against the code and the values present when the error occurs.
Classify the problem before changing code
Syntax errors
A syntax error means the JavaScript cannot be parsed, so the affected code cannot run as written. Look for a typo, missing delimiter, unmatched bracket or parenthesis, or malformed expression near the location reported. The actual mistake can be just before the highlighted point, so inspect the surrounding code too.
Runtime errors
A runtime error occurs while code is executing. The statement may be syntactically valid but rely on an incorrect assumption—for example, that a value exists, has a particular shape, or is ready to use. Inspect each relevant value at the failing statement instead of inferring its state from the intended code path.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Logic errors
A logic error produces the wrong result even though the program may run without throwing an exception. If the console shows no useful error, check the feature’s inputs, intermediate values, conditions, and output. Compare what the code actually does with what the feature should do.
Inspect the values at the failure
Use console.log() to inspect values before the failing operation, or console.error() to make diagnostic output easier to spot. Check types and data shape as well as the value itself: an object, array, string, and unresolved Promise are not interchangeable.

console.log({ value, type: typeof value });
For collections or nested data, inspect the relevant property or element directly. Confirm that it exists before relying on it, and trace where it was assigned. Remove temporary logging when you finish debugging so diagnostic output does not clutter the console.
Check asynchronous work
Do not assume that an asynchronous operation has completed merely because the code that started it has run. For example, fetch() returns a Promise; it does not immediately return the resolved response data. Wait for the Promise to resolve and then inspect the result before using it. If code reads data too early, the value may be missing or still represent an unsettled operation.

Use breakpoints when logs are not enough
- Open the source file linked from the console entry in developer tools.
- Set a breakpoint on or just before the failing statement.
- Reproduce the error. Execution should pause at the breakpoint.
- Inspect the current scope and call stack to see the active values and how execution reached that line.
- Step through the relevant statements until the value or assumption diverges from what the code requires.
A breakpoint is especially useful when a value changes over time or passes through several functions. A linter can also catch some invalid code before execution, but it cannot identify every runtime or logic problem.
Handle Promise failures as well as synchronous errors
A synchronous uncaught exception and an unhandled Promise rejection are different failure paths. The Window error event reports synchronous script errors; an unhandled Promise rejection uses unhandledrejection. A global handler that listens only for error therefore may miss asynchronous failures. When a failure follows Promise-based work, inspect the rejection and ensure the code handles it appropriately.

When the console reports a CORS error
A CORS error concerns the browser’s cross-origin access rules. Inspect the failed request in the Network panel and the server’s response configuration. In most cases, the server must allow the requesting origin; changing unrelated page JavaScript cannot grant that permission. If the remote server does not allow the request, a proxy you control may be an option.
Setting a request to no-cors does not make a blocked response readable. It produces an opaque response whose body and headers are unavailable to JavaScript, so it is not a general fix for a CORS failure.

Trace errors in minified or bundled files
If the console points into optimized JavaScript, check whether the build provides a valid source map. Developer tools can use a map to show the corresponding original source instead of forcing you to debug the generated bundle. A server can identify a map with the SourceMap response header; when both that header and a source annotation are present, the header takes precedence.
Verify the fix
After changing the code, repeat the same action that originally triggered the problem. Confirm that the console error is gone and that the affected feature now behaves as intended. If it still fails, capture the new message and location and continue from the earliest relevant error; the fix may have exposed a separate problem or left the underlying assumption unchanged.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a JavaScript debugger. It can be useful when you need a screenshot of the page state around a visual bug, but it will not diagnose or repair the script error. This one-call request captures a page:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
