AngularJS and Angular are separate generations of Google’s web framework, not two names for the same current product. AngularJS refers to version 1.x; Angular refers to version 2.0 and later. They use different programming models, and AngularJS support ended in January 2022. If you are choosing a framework for new development, use modern Angular rather than AngularJS; if you maintain an AngularJS application, plan around its unsupported status and evaluate a migration separately.

AngularJS: directives and controllers
AngularJS extends HTML with directives used to build dynamic applications. Its official overview describes an approach centered on directives, data binding, controllers, dependency injection, and plain JavaScript models. Angular: components and newer capabilities
Modern Angular is a web framework maintained by Google. Its documentation presents components as a central part of its model and also covers dependency injection, signals, SSR, and SSG. Those differences matter when designing or maintaining an application, but they do not establish that Angular is faster for every project. Performance depends on the application and how it is built. Support and what it means for existing applications
AngularJS is unsupported
The AngularJS project site states that support officially ended in January 2022. An existing AngularJS application may continue to run, but it no longer receives official support from the project. Teams should account for that status when assessing maintenance, security exposure, dependencies, and future development. AngularJS official project site
Modern Angular has a release support policy

Which should you choose?
- Starting a new application: Choose modern Angular if Angular is the framework you want. AngularJS is a legacy generation whose official support has ended.
- Maintaining an AngularJS application: Separate short-term maintenance decisions from the longer-term question of whether to migrate. The application’s architecture, dependencies, risk tolerance, and available team expertise affect the plan.
- Updating a modern Angular application: Use Angular’s current update documentation and migrations for applicable changes between modern Angular versions.

AngularJS to Angular migration: what to know
Angular’s update documentation points AngularJS users to a separate upgrade guide. That distinction is important: an AngularJS-to-Angular move is not the same as applying a routine modern Angular version update. The linked legacy guide was not available in a form that supports verified step-by-step instructions here, so do not treat modern Angular schematics as a complete AngularJS conversion recipe.
