For most development teams, the best place to start is the code-review workflow built into the Git host they already use: GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket. Compare the approvals and merge controls available on your plan, hosting requirements, reviewer assignment, CI and security context, and integrations before adding another tool. Consider Gerrit for its distinct review system, Graphite if stacked pull requests are central to your workflow, and CodeRabbit as an optional AI review layer—not a replacement for human judgment.

How to choose a code review tool

Start with the repository host and the controls your team actually needs. A tool can support comments and approvals without providing every merge gate, reviewer-assignment aid, or hosting option at the plan level you require.

  • Repository compatibility: Does it work with the Git platform and hosting arrangement your repositories use?
  • Hosting and governance: Is SaaS acceptable, or do you need a self-managed option? Check the permissions, approval rules, and compliance controls required by your organization.
  • Review control: Verify required approvals, change requests, code-owner routing, reviewer assignment, and whether the tool can block a merge under your plan.
  • Review context: Check whether test, build, security, dependency, and issue-tracker information is visible where reviewers work.
  • Workflow: Decide whether ordinary pull or merge requests fit, or whether stacked changes or a separate review system better matches how your team works.
  • AI and total cost: For AI review, assess useful findings, noise, data handling, and cost in a pilot. For every option, verify current seat, usage, repository, and plan limits before purchase.

Compare the main code review tools

Tool Best starting point Documented capabilities and considerations
GitHub pull-request review Teams already hosting code on GitHub Review commits, files, and diffs; comment at general, line, or file level; use approvals and required reviews; review stacked pull requests and inspect dependency changes. See GitHub’s pull-request review documentation.
GitLab merge-request review Teams using GitLab.com, Self-Managed, or Dedicated Supports review comments, suggestions authors can apply in the UI, and approvals. The documented core review process is listed for Free, Premium, and Ultimate. Reviewer-assignment support for approval rules and Code Owners is marked Premium and Ultimate. See GitLab’s merge-request review documentation and confirm current tier details.
Bitbucket code review Teams using Bitbucket and Jira Atlassian describes contextual comments, test and security results in the pull-request view, review conditions, and Jira issue or task creation from a PR. Its feature page says enforced merge checks require Premium. See Atlassian’s Bitbucket code review page.
Gerrit Teams specifically seeking Gerrit’s separate review-system model It is a distinct code-review system, not simply another host-native PR feature. Before adopting it, validate the current release, hosting and maintenance needs, and repository compatibility. See the Gerrit project site.
Graphite Teams for whom stacked pull requests are a central workflow A candidate for exploring stacked-PR workflows. Check the current plans and terms on Graphite’s pricing page; a specific price or comparative value is not established here.
CodeRabbit Teams evaluating AI-generated review assistance Its vendor pricing page advertises plans and free review for public repositories. That establishes an available product and commercial path, not independent accuracy or suitability for a particular codebase. Check data-handling and plan terms. See CodeRabbit’s pricing page.

When the native review workflow is enough

If your team already uses GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket, evaluate its built-in review flow first. This keeps review close to the repository and may put approvals, changes, tests, security signals, or issue context in the workflow your developers already use. The exact controls vary by host and, in some cases, plan; check the feature details against your required merge policy rather than assuming that a review feature implies an enforced gate.

GitHub

GitHub’s documentation covers comments on a pull request generally or on specific lines and files, approvals and required reviews, stacked pull-request review, and dependency changes. This makes it a natural baseline for GitHub-hosted teams, not a universal winner.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

GitLab

GitLab documents comments, UI-applied suggestions, and approvals across GitLab.com, Self-Managed, and Dedicated. The core review process is listed on Free, Premium, and Ultimate, while reviewer-assignment support for approval rules and Code Owners is marked Premium and Ultimate. Map each needed control to the current tier and deployment model.

Bitbucket

Bitbucket is worth comparing closely when Jira is already part of the team’s workflow: Atlassian describes contextual PR comments, test and security results, review conditions, and creating Jira issues or tasks from a PR. Enforced merge checks are stated to require Premium on its feature page. The same page reports a 21% reduction in time-to-approve for teams using its new pull-request UI; this is an Atlassian-published claim, with no year or enough study methodology stated there to generalize it to other teams.

When to consider a different review model

Stacked pull requests with Graphite

Graphite merits evaluation when a team deliberately breaks work into dependent, stacked pull requests rather than relying only on the usual PR pattern. Whether that workflow is worthwhile depends on how the team organizes changes and reviews them. Consult the current Graphite pricing page for plan information; confirm fit and current terms directly before adoption.

A dedicated review system with Gerrit

Gerrit is an option for teams that want its separate review-system approach. The project site alone does not establish a detailed feature comparison here, so verify current releases, hosting and maintenance requirements, and compatibility with your repositories before selecting it.

How to evaluate AI code review

AI review is an additional source of feedback, not evidence that a team can dispense with human review or approval. CodeRabbit’s pricing page advertises plans, including free review for public repositories, but a vendor plan page does not establish review accuracy or suitability for your codebase. Verify data-handling terms and the plan’s limits before using it with sensitive code.

  1. Choose representative pull requests, including changes where your team knows what a good review should catch.
  2. Pilot the service and record which findings are actionable, incorrect, or noisy; assess the experience against your team’s real workflow.
  3. Check repository permissions, data-handling terms, and current plan limits with the vendor.
  4. Keep human review and the team’s normal approval process in place while evaluating the results.

Keep ScreenshotNeo in its lane

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a code-review tool, so it is not a substitute for any option above. It may be useful as a separate developer utility when a workflow needs website screenshots: it accepts consent banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; AI agents can use its MCP server; and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000.
