Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Manual testing still matters because automated tests can check only the behaviors and outcomes a team has encoded, while a person can investigate unfamiliar behavior, adapt tests as evidence emerges, and judge whether a feature makes sense for users. The strongest approach is not manual versus automated: automate stable, repeatable checks and use focused human exploration where discovery, context, and judgment are important.
What manual testing contributes
Manual testing is most valuable when it is an investigation, not simply a slower way to replay a script. In exploratory testing, the tester designs checks, executes them, and evaluates what happened as they learn about the software. Each observation can shape the next probe.
For example, while exploring a new account-recovery flow, a tester might notice that an error message reveals whether an email address is registered. That observation suggests follow-up checks around privacy, wording, and behavior across different account states. A predefined automated test can catch this issue once the team has encoded an assertion for it; exploratory work can help the team discover the question in the first place.
Manual judgment also helps assess whether a feature fulfills user intent. Passing assertions establish that particular expected outcomes occurred; they do not, by themselves, establish that users will be satisfied or that the software has no defects. Google’s testing guidance specifically cautions that code coverage alone does not show that covered code is bug-free: How Much Testing is Enough?

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What should you test manually?
Prioritize human-led exploration where the behavior is new, changing, high-risk, or sensitive to user context. The goal is to ask questions the team may not yet have converted into repeatable assertions.
- Unfamiliar or changing behavior: Explore new features and meaningful changes before their expected behavior is fully settled.
- User-sensitive flows: Examine whether a journey feels coherent and whether messages, transitions, and recovery options make sense in context.
- Unexpected states: Try combinations and sequences that may not be represented in existing scripts, then investigate surprising results.
- Risk-heavy areas: Focus on behavior where a confusing or incorrect outcome would have a serious consequence for users or the product.
- AI-based features: Assess outputs and failure modes alongside technical checks, especially where results can vary with inputs or data.
Manual testing is not a guarantee of finding defects, and automation is not inherently unable to test usability or complex behavior. The useful distinction is the task: scripts repeat checks the team has defined; exploratory testing helps investigate questions that are still being discovered.

Can automation replace exploratory testing?
Automation cannot replace the adaptive part of exploratory testing when the team needs to learn what to test next. A script follows encoded steps and assertions; an exploratory tester can revise the investigation in response to observations. Once a valuable discovery becomes a stable expectation, the team can often add an automated check so it is exercised reliably in future changes.
This is a division of work, not a claim that one method is always better. Automation is particularly useful for repeatable checks and known requirements. Human exploration is useful where context, interpretation, or changing behavior matters. Google’s 2008 account of testing Google Talk describes a project with multiple client implementations and new features, and explains that its plan identified areas for automation and where manual testing remained necessary: Exploratory Testing on Chat. That example illustrates a planning approach; it is not a universal formula for every product.

How manual and automated testing work together
Use layers of checks, then make time for targeted exploration. Google recommends a solid unit-test base, integration testing, end-to-end tests for critical user journeys, and attention to both code and functional coverage. A practical division looks like this:
| Testing need | Useful emphasis | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stable behavior repeated after changes | Automation | Scripts can rerun known checks consistently; unit and integration tests provide a base for feedback. |
| Critical end-to-end user journeys | Automated assertions plus human review | Automate repeatable journey checks, while people examine whether the experience still works naturally. |
| Unfamiliar or changing behavior | Manual exploratory testing | A tester can learn from each result and adapt the next probe. |
| Whether a feature meets user intent | Manual judgment informed by requirements and context | Coverage and passing assertions alone do not establish that the feature fulfills user needs. |
| AI-based behavior | Planned combination of human evaluation and technical tests | Behavior can be probabilistic, non-deterministic, and dependent on data. |
Make the division explicit
- Define important user outcomes and risks. Identify what must work and what would be costly or harmful if it failed.
- Automate stable expectations. Put repeatable checks into appropriate unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
- Schedule focused exploratory sessions. Assign testers a feature, risk, or user question rather than asking them to retest everything without direction.
- Record discoveries and remaining risks. Note what was explored, what was checked, what surprised the tester, and what remains uncertain. This makes findings useful to the team and helps identify stable checks worth automating.
- Review the strategy as the product changes. Revisit the boundary between automated checks and manual exploration when features, risks, or user expectations shift.
What changes when the product uses AI?
AI-based systems bring testing concerns that are not limited to conventional fixed outputs. ISTQB’s Certified Tester AI Testing (CT-AI) Version 2.0 covers AI systems, including machine learning and generative AI systems such as large language models, and identifies probabilistic behavior, non-determinism, and reliance on data as relevant characteristics. Its lifecycle-oriented scope includes input data, models, and machine-learning development: ISTQB Certified Tester AI Testing (CT-AI).

For such features, plan technical tests and human evaluation together. A person can judge whether an output is appropriate for its use and investigate surprising behavior; technical checks can assess defined properties and repeat them across changes. ISTQB’s 2026 announcement for CT-AI syllabus v2.0 notes techniques including exploratory testing and red teaming for generative AI and large language models: ISTQB releases CT-AI syllabus version 2.0. This is syllabus guidance, not a claim that any particular testing mix suits every AI product.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does exploratory testing mean testing without a plan?
No. A focused session can have a feature, risk, or question as its charter while still allowing the tester to adapt checks as they learn.
Is manual testing only useful before release?
No. It can be useful whenever a change or new behavior calls for human investigation; a team’s strategy should determine when those sessions happen.
Where can I learn more about AI testing?
ISTQB publishes official CT-AI and CT-GenAI qualification information and materials. Details can change, so check the current official pages: CT-AI and CT-GenAI.
