Check the input page first, then JavaScript timing, local and network resources, and capture geometry. Options such as waiting longer or ignoring load errors are diagnostic controls, not universal fixes.
1. Confirm the page has content before changing converter settings
Open the exact input URL in a current browser, or open the local HTML file directly. Check whether the expected content appears there. For a remote page, also check redirects, authentication, and whether the machine running wkhtmltoimage can reach the site. If the source page itself returns an error, interstitial, or empty response, changing image dimensions will not restore the intended page.
A historical report describes a remote page that produced a redirect or interstitial result rather than the expected content. The reporter suspected a JavaScript redirect, but the report is an example, not proof that redirects explain every blank image: issue #2346.
2. Check JavaScript and when the page becomes ready
Pages that create content with JavaScript may not be ready when the converter captures them. The command reference provides controls to enable or disable JavaScript, wait a specified number of milliseconds, and wait for a particular window-status value. See the Debian wkhtmltoimage manual and the project’s settings documentation.

- Ensure JavaScript is enabled if the page depends on it; check that the command does not include
--disable-javascript. - Try
--javascript-delay <msec>with a measured delay if content appears after initial load. - If the page sets a known status after rendering, try
--window-status <value>. - Use JavaScript debugging while diagnosing script errors.
For example, test a delay with a remote URL and an explicit output format:
wkhtmltoimage --javascript-delay 2000 https://example.com output.png
Replace the example URL with the page being diagnosed. Two seconds is an example setting, not a recommended universal wait. A delay cannot repair JavaScript the renderer cannot run, an upstream navigation problem, or a page that never reaches the expected state. In the issue #2346 report, adding a delay did not fix the reporter’s case.

3. Verify local files and resource permissions
When a local HTML file references images, stylesheets, fonts, or scripts, confirm that each path exists and that the converter’s operating-system user can read it. Local-file access may be restricted by the converter’s settings. The command reference documents both broad access with --enable-local-file-access and a scoped alternative, --allow <path>.

Prefer allowing only the directory the input needs rather than enabling unrestricted local-file access. For example:
wkhtmltoimage --allow /path/to/assets /path/to/page.html output.png

Use paths appropriate to your system and input. A 2019 report involving version 0.12.5 on OS X Sierra and CentOS 7 shows why this check matters: its sample command disabled local-file access while the HTML referenced an image, and the log reported blocked file access and a failed about:blank load. That report illustrates one configuration problem; it does not establish that every missing image causes a blank page. See issue #4408.
4. Read page-load and media-load errors separately
Check the converter’s warnings and errors, then test whether the affected page or resource URL resolves successfully from the machine running the command. Consider network access, authentication, and proxy requirements. The command reference has separate controls for handling page-load failures and media-load failures; the project settings documentation describes abort, skip, and ignore behavior for failed objects.
These settings govern what the converter does after an object fails; they do not make an unreachable resource load. In particular, ignore does not promise a repaired or complete render. In issue #4408, the reporter says ignore/skip options did not avoid the reported ProtocolUnknownError in that setup.

5. Rule out viewport, crop, and image-output settings
Once you know the page is loading, check whether the output settings cut off the content. The manual documents width and height, crop position and dimensions, and zoom. It notes that width is a guide unless smart width is disabled. For diagnosis, remove crop settings and try a larger capture before changing several values at once.
- Inspect
--widthand--height, plus any crop coordinates or crop width and height. - Check zoom if the content appears outside the expected area.
- Confirm image loading is enabled if the expected result depends on images.
- Test an output format supported by the installed build; the manual lists formats and image-quality settings.
The documentation lists these controls but does not establish cropping or dimensions as a common cause of blank pages. Test them to rule out a constrained output, not because they are a proven universal explanation.

If the input works in a current browser, resources are accessible, and the output remains blank or incomplete, the page may rely on browser features or scripts that this rendering setup does not handle. The wkhtmltopdf GitHub repository is archived and read-only. Its issue index includes reports titled “HTML page turns completely white/empty” and “Vanilla Javascript won’t render,” but issue titles are user reports, not official diagnoses or guaranteed fixes: project issue index.

For a page built around modern browser behavior, compare the result with a renderer that supports the page’s requirements. Treat that as a compatibility test: the reports and documentation do not establish one universal replacement or guarantee that a different renderer will fix a particular input.

No. It changes how a failed load is handled; it does not make the missing page or resource available.
