To make a wkhtmltoimage screenshot smaller without making it hard to read, reduce JPEG quality gradually and inspect the result at its intended display size. If the image includes unused page area, reduce the capture width or crop the region instead of shrinking every detail. There is no universal quality or width setting that preserves readability on every page.
Choose an output format for the content
wkhtmltoimage documents JPG, PNG, BMP, and SVG output. Its --quality option controls JPEG compression; it is not a general quality control for every format. The documentation does not publish a format-by-format size or readability benchmark. Ubuntu’s wkhtmltoimage manual and the Debian 0.12.6-2 source describe these options.
- Photographs or mixed content: Try JPG and adjust its quality setting in small steps. JPEG compression can reduce file size, but inspect text and edges for artifacts.
- Text-heavy interfaces, diagrams, or sharp edges: Compare PNG with JPG at the actual display size. PNG avoids the JPEG-specific quality tradeoff, but the cited documentation does not establish which format will be smaller for your page.
- Need transparency or vector output: Consider whether a documented format meets that requirement, and verify how the viewer or downstream application handles the result.
Reduce unnecessary pixels without cutting off content
The --width option sets the rendering screen width, but it is a guide by default. --disable-smart-width makes the specified width strict; that may leave content outside the width, so inspect the image for clipping. If only part of a page matters, use crop width and height and crop coordinates to bound the captured region rather than reducing the entire page.
Zoom is also available, but it changes the rendered scale and composition. Check small text and page layout after changing it; the documentation does not identify a universally optimal zoom value.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Try a measured JPEG starting point
This command uses example values, not settings proven to suit every page:
wkhtmltoimage --width 1200 --quality 85 input.html screenshot.jpg
The documented --quality range is 0–100. Try lower values in steps, compare the resulting file sizes, and keep the lowest setting that remains legible at the final viewing size. Confirm your installed binary’s supported options with its help output because builds and wrappers can vary.

Make the comparison repeatable
- Choose representative pages, including the densest text or most important fine detail.
- Render each page with a few JPEG quality values, keeping other settings constant.
- Compare byte sizes and inspect text, icons, and edges at the image’s intended display size.
- Check that the whole required page or region is present. If not, adjust width or crop settings and repeat the comparison.
- Compare PNG if sharp text or edges show unacceptable JPEG artifacts. Record the format and settings that work for each type of page.
This is a practical comparison method, not a benchmark: the documentation supplies option ranges and controls, not a quality threshold or file-size result.
Separate capture timing from image compression
The library settings document a JavaScript delay after page load. Increase or otherwise tune that delay only when the page needs time to display the content you want captured. It affects the captured page state, not the compression rate, so it should not be treated as a file-size setting.

Troubleshoot small or unreadable results
- The file is still large: If you are saving JPG, lower
--qualityincrementally and compare. If the capture contains blank margins or irrelevant regions, adjust the capture width or crop rather than sacrificing detail everywhere. - Text looks smeared or edges show artifacts: Raise JPEG quality or compare PNG. Inspect at the actual display size; a preview enlarged beyond its intended use can make artifacts seem more prominent.
- Content is missing at the sides: Check whether strict width was enabled with
--disable-smart-width. Widen the capture or use a crop that includes the needed region. - The output does not reflect dynamic content: Tune the JavaScript delay to the page’s loading behavior and capture again. A delay will not make the image itself more compressed.
- An option is unavailable or behaves differently: Check the installed binary’s help output and version. The cited implementation is Debian’s wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6-2; other builds and wrappers may differ.
