A web proxy sits between an automation client and a website, receiving and forwarding the client’s requests. In Playwright, you can configure a proxy for an entire browser or for an individual browser context. For HTTPS, an HTTP proxy commonly uses CONNECT to establish a tunnel; that changes the route but does not, by itself, guarantee access, anonymity, or permission to collect data.
What a web proxy does
A forward proxy is an intermediary the client selects. The basic path is:
Browser automation client → forward proxy → website
The client sends a request through the proxy, which forwards it toward the destination. A request might pass through more than one intermediary. The proxy is part of the request path, not a property that makes the destination approve the request. The IETF’s RFC 9110 distinguishes a proxy from a gateway and a tunnel.

Forward proxy versus reverse proxy
A forward proxy is selected by a client to relay requests outward. A gateway, often called a reverse proxy, acts as the origin server from the perspective of one connection and forwards requests to other servers. The two can both sit between systems, but they serve different roles and are configured from different sides of the connection.
What a proxy changes—and what it does not
A proxy changes the network route and places its operator between the client and destination. It does not inherently grant access, make a client anonymous, or authorize scraping. Those questions depend on the target, the proxy’s configuration and practices, and the applicable rules.
How HTTPS works through an HTTP proxy
For HTTPS, a client can ask an HTTP proxy to open a tunnel to a named host and port using the CONNECT method. If the proxy successfully establishes the tunnel, it relays data in both directions. TLS can then secure the virtual connection between the client and the destination.

This is the standard tunnel mechanism, not a guarantee that every deployment preserves end-to-end TLS unchanged. Interception or other proxy configuration can affect what the intermediary can see. RFC 9110 notes that intermediaries are positioned for on-path attacks and may have access to personal, security-related, or proprietary information. Treat the proxy operator as part of your security and privacy trust model, and do not send sensitive traffic through a proxy whose handling you have not evaluated.

Configure a proxy in Playwright
Playwright’s official Network documentation describes HTTP(S) and SOCKSv5 proxies, proxy configuration at browser or browser-context scope, credentials for HTTP(S) proxies, and bypass hosts. The example below uses the JavaScript API documented by Playwright; check the documentation for current binding-specific details before adapting it to another language.

})();Replace the example proxy host and port with values supplied by a proxy operator. Keep credentials in environment variables or another appropriate secret store rather than committing them to source control. Omit username, password, or bypass when they are not needed. Confirm the accepted proxy URL scheme and authentication details with your provider.

Set a proxy for one browser context
Use context-level configuration when separate contexts need separate proxy settings. This is useful, for example, when an application creates isolated contexts for independent authorized test sessions. Browser-level configuration is the simpler choice when all automation traffic should share one proxy configuration. These are scope choices, not claims that one scope is faster or more secure.

})();In both examples, change the proxy server and target URL to match your permitted test environment. If your configuration does not require credentials or bypass hosts, remove those properties rather than supplying dummy values.
Choose the right scope and settings
- Browser-level proxy: use when the browser’s automation traffic should share a proxy configuration.
- Context-level proxy: use when different browser contexts need different proxy configurations.
- Authentication: configure credentials only when required by the HTTP(S) proxy and protect them like other secrets.
- Bypass: list hosts that should not go through the proxy when that behavior is needed; verify the resulting route in your environment.
- Protocol: confirm that the proxy’s HTTP(S) or SOCKSv5 protocol is compatible with the Playwright configuration you intend to use.
When proxies help in authorized automation
Proxies can be useful where a test environment requires requests to pass through a controlled intermediary, or where a team needs to route automation traffic through an approved network setup. They can also help reproduce an application’s behavior under a particular network route. These are routing and testing uses, not assurances that a site will allow a request or that a proxy will conceal automation.

For routine testing, first consider whether direct access, a staging site, or an API intended for automation is the simpler and more reliable option. Use a proxy when the route itself is part of the requirement, and document which requests should pass through it.
How to evaluate a proxy for a project
The available standards and Playwright documentation establish protocol and configuration behavior; they do not rank proxy providers. Compare providers against your own requirements rather than relying on unsupported performance claims.
- Protocol compatibility: does the provider offer HTTP(S) or SOCKSv5 in a form your framework supports?
- Configuration scope: do you need one browser-wide route or different routes for individual contexts?
- Authentication and bypass: are the required credential and host-exclusion behaviors supported and documented?
- Privacy and security: what traffic or metadata can the provider observe, how does it handle logs, and what protections apply?
- Reliability and session behavior: how does the service handle failures and session continuity for your permitted workload?
- Geography and cost: if your test requires a specific location, is it available under terms and pricing that fit the project?
- Operational limits: confirm usage limits, support arrangements, and acceptable-use terms before relying on the service.
Proxy limitations, access rules, and robots.txt
A proxy is a message-forwarding mechanism, not an access-control exception. Before automating collection, consider the site’s terms, applicable law, data sensitivity, and the load your requests create. The relevant obligations vary by jurisdiction and target; the technical standards cited here do not determine them.

The IETF’s RFC 9309 describes robots.txt rules as requested crawler behavior and explicitly says they are not access authorization. A robots.txt file therefore neither grants permission to collect data nor settles whether a request is authorized. Respect applicable site rules and obtain authorization where required.
Browser proxy configuration versus PAC
Managed browser environments may use a Proxy Auto-Configuration (PAC) file: a JavaScript function that selects whether requests go directly or through a proxy. Mozilla’s PAC documentation explains this browser mechanism. It is distinct from Playwright’s documented browser- and context-level proxy options above, so do not assume that configuring one automatically configures the other.
