Then refresh the narrowest set of baselines and review the expected, actual, and diff images alongside the application code before committing.
Use a review-first workflow
- Run the relevant tests without update mode. This shows which assertions differ from their existing baselines. Do not begin with
--update-snapshots: replacing expectations first can erase the failure signal you need to investigate. Playwright advises reviewing snapshot changes and committing the snapshot files with the code change (Visual comparisons). - Investigate each difference. Compare the expected and actual images, inspect the corresponding application change, and decide whether the changed pixels are part of the intended update. If you cannot explain a difference, leave it failing and investigate further.
- Regenerate only the intended baselines. Use an explicit update mode supported by your installed Playwright version. For changed baselines, the current CLI documentation specifies
npx playwright test --update-snapshots=changed(Command line). - Review the new artifacts and code. Inspect expected, actual, and diff images for every updated test. Check the relevant application code as well; an updated image is a new expectation, not proof that the output is correct. Playwright Trace Viewer can show screenshot comparisons and test context such as browser and viewport (Trace viewer).
- Commit reviewed snapshots with the change. Treat baseline files as version-controlled test expectations, not disposable output. Keep them in the same review as the application change that justifies them (Visual comparisons).
Choose the update mode deliberately
Playwright’s CLI documents four snapshot update scopes. The command-line setting is version-sensitive: release notes record changes in update behavior, so check the CLI help for the Playwright version installed in your project and specify the mode rather than relying on a default (Command line; Release notes).

For a targeted refresh, run the relevant tests normally first, then use the explicit changed mode, for example:
npx playwright test tests/profile.spec.ts --update-snapshots=changed

Replace the test path with the test file or selection you have reviewed. Do not assume the same unqualified update flag has identical defaults across Playwright versions; consult the installed CLI’s help and version-specific documentation.
Review each image diff in context
A useful review compares three artifacts: the stored expected image, the latest actual image, and Playwright’s diff image. A pass/fail result alone cannot tell you whether a changed layout, missing element, or altered text is acceptable. In Trace Viewer, use the screenshot diff together with test metadata, including the browser and viewport, to understand the capture context (Trace viewer).

- Check whether the changed region corresponds to the intended application change.
- Look for unrelated changes elsewhere in the page, such as shifted content, missing controls, or altered styling.
- Review the code change that produced the image, not just the replacement baseline.
- If many snapshots changed unexpectedly, pause and check whether the capture environment or a shared application change affected them.
Keep screenshot rendering consistent
Visual output can vary with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and verify baselines in a consistent environment where possible. When examining a difference, keep the project or browser and viewport context in view; otherwise, an environment change may be mistaken for a product change (Visual comparisons; Trace viewer).
expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive page screenshots to match before comparing the latest capture with the expectation. Animation handling defaults to disabled: finite animations are fast-forwarded, and infinite animations are canceled for capture and then played again. These measures improve capture stability, but they do not decide whether a change is intended (PageAssertions).

Use tolerances and exclusions narrowly
Screenshot assertions support comparison options such as threshold, maxDiffPixels, and maxDiffPixelRatio. They affect what differences can pass: the threshold controls permitted perceived color difference, while the pixel limits permit a configured amount of pixel-level difference. Do not raise a tolerance simply to silence a failure. Set it narrowly for a known rendering-noise source and inspect the affected region (PageAssertions).
Playwright also supports masking selected locators and a stylePath stylesheet to hide or alter dynamic content, including content in shadow DOM and frames. These options can be appropriate for genuinely nondeterministic details, but broad masks or styles can hide real regressions. Target only the volatile value or region, document why it is excluded, and make sure meaningful surrounding content and layout remain visible (PageAssertions).

Troubleshoot unexpected snapshot changes
- Many images changed after a seemingly small update: inspect shared layout or styling changes, then confirm the browser, operating system, viewport, and headless settings used to produce the images. Avoid accepting a wide regeneration until you understand its scope.
- The update command changes more files than expected: verify the installed Playwright version and explicit mode. Use
changedfor changed snapshots rather thanall, and limit the test selection when appropriate. - A test passes after a baseline refresh, but the result looks wrong: the test is now comparing against the new expectation. Re-open expected, actual, and diff images and review the code; passing after an update is not independent confirmation of correctness.
- A difference appears to be only a color or pixel fluctuation: first seek a stable capture environment. If a known source of rendering noise remains, configure a narrowly scoped tolerance and verify that meaningful changes still appear in the diff.
- A mask or style rule makes a failure disappear: narrow it to the specific unstable content and review the surrounding region for layout or content regressions.
