For iPhone or iPad with OBS Studio, a documented route is NDI: install OBS, the DistroAV plugin and the required NDI Runtime, then enable NDI output in the phone app and select it as an NDI Source in OBS. Android users can use Streamlabs Mobile’s LAN streaming feature with Streamlabs Desktop.
Choose a phone-to-computer workflow
The sender and receiver must support the same format or product-specific connection method. These workflows are not automatically interchangeable: an NDI receiver will not necessarily accept a URL provided by another app.

For other software or phone models, verify that the receiver supports the feed type offered by the sender. OBS also maintains a smartphone camera guide covering smartphone camera workflows.
Set up an iPhone or iPad as an NDI source in OBS
1. Check versions and install the computer components
Install OBS Studio, DistroAV and the NDI Runtime on the receiving computer. The Camera for OBS Studio documentation states that DistroAV 6.2.1 requires OBS Studio 31.1.1 or newer and NDI Runtime 6.3 or newer. Those are version-specific requirements; check the current release notes and setup guide before installing because requirements can change.

DistroAV is a third-party OBS integration. The setup guide says Camera for OBS Studio sends using NDI 5, and current DistroAV releases support receiving it with NDI Runtime 6.3 through backward compatibility.
2. Connect both devices to the same local network
Connect the phone and computer to the same Wi-Fi network, or use Ethernet for the computer if available. Avoid guest Wi-Fi and access points with client isolation enabled: those settings can prevent devices on the same Wi-Fi from discovering or reaching each other.

3. Turn on NDI output on the phone
- Open Camera for OBS Studio on the iPhone or iPad.
- Open the app’s settings and choose Output.
- Select NDI. Some app releases may label this NewTek NDI.
- Confirm that the app reports it is broadcasting, and keep it open while you use the feed.
4. Add the phone in OBS
- In OBS, add an NDI Source to the scene you want to use.
- Open the source properties and choose the phone from the available source list.
- If the phone does not appear immediately, wait briefly and reopen the source properties to check discovery again.

Use Android with Streamlabs Mobile and Streamlabs Desktop
- Install Streamlabs Mobile on the Android phone and Streamlabs Desktop on the receiving computer.
- Connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.
- In Streamlabs Mobile, enable LAN streaming and use the URL supplied by the phone.
- In Streamlabs Desktop, add a media source and enter that URL as described in the Streamlabs Mobile LAN Streaming Source Guide.
This is a Streamlabs-specific connection method, not a general IP-camera URL that every receiver can use. Follow the current app guide if labels or steps differ in your installed versions.

Improve reliability and picture quality
Start with the network
- Keep the phone near the Wi-Fi access point to reduce the chance of a weak or inconsistent connection.
- For a more stable connection, use Ethernet for the receiving computer where practical. Connecting a phone by Ethernet requires a compatible adapter; check the phone’s connector and adapter support before buying one.
- For higher NDI bitrates or resolutions over Wi-Fi, NDI recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 equipment. That recommendation is not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or picture quality; results depend on the phone, receiver and network conditions.
Reduce the load if video stutters
Lower the sender’s resolution or frame rate and see whether the feed stabilizes. If the receiver offers a low-bandwidth option, try it when a softer image is acceptable. These changes trade image detail or motion smoothness for a feed that may cope better with limited network capacity.
Frame the phone before broadcasting
Secure the phone so it will not move during the session, and check the framing, focus and camera selection in the sender app. NDI lists high, medium and low bandwidth modes, autofocus, zoom, front/rear camera selection, a connection meter and tally display for its Camera app; confirm the current app’s feature set and availability on your platform and in your region.

Troubleshoot a phone OBS cannot see
The phone is missing from the NDI Source list
- Confirm broadcasting: make sure the sender app is open and its NDI output status indicates broadcasting.
- Check the local network: both devices must be on the same network. Move them off guest Wi-Fi and disable client isolation if the network administrator can do so.
- Check iOS permission: allow the sender app to use the Local Network permission in iOS settings.
- Check Windows firewall and network profile: on a Private network profile, allow OBS and DistroAV through the firewall as needed.
- Check discovery across network boundaries: the documented OBS workflow uses mDNS for discovery. A network that blocks mDNS or places devices on separate subnets can prevent the phone from appearing; consult the NDI setup and discovery troubleshooting guidance.
- Restart after component changes: if you have just installed or updated OBS, DistroAV or the NDI Runtime, restart the relevant apps or computer and try discovery again.
The picture drops or stutters
- Lower the phone’s output resolution or frame rate.
- Move closer to the access point and reduce competing network use if possible.
- Try Ethernet for the receiving computer, or a compatible Ethernet adapter for the phone.
- Use the receiver’s low-bandwidth option if available and acceptable for your production.
The URL or source does not work in another receiver
Check that the receiver supports the exact feed type. Streamlabs’ phone-provided LAN URL is documented for Streamlabs Desktop; NDI discovery is a different workflow. Do not assume a source intended for one ecosystem will work in another without explicit receiver support.
